  Frictions and friendships

  Cultural encounters in the nineteenth century

  The exhibition The Dutch in Paris, which was on show in the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam and in the Petit Palais, Paris during the fall of 2017 and spring of 2018 respectively, aimed to visualize the artistic exchange between Dutch and French artists between 1789 and 1914. As part of a larger research project, set up by the RKD – Netherlands Institute for Art History, the exhibition generated so much response that ESNA, in collaboration with the RKD and NWO, decided to organize an international conference on the subject, focusing specifically on international as well as national and local points of encounter and how they facilitated artistic exchange.

  The how in design ? Introspective/retrospective design

  Rencontres annuelles internationales du design (RAID 2019)

  Les rencontres annuelles internationales du design (RAID) sont nées d'une initiative de l'École supérieure des sciences et technologies du design et s'articulent autour de deux volets majeurs : un scientifique portant un regard prospectif sur le domaine de la recherche et un autre expérientiel, tourné vers l'exploration de nouvelles formes de pratiques et d'échanges, visant l'ouverture du design sur d'autres domaines et d'autres territoires. La vision des RAID aspire à sillonner et à saisir de nouvelles formes d'interactions possibles entre le design et ses environnements scientifiques, professionnels, culturels, etc. Les RAID sont à leur troisième édition qui se tiendra durant trois jours du 24 au 26 Avril 2019 à l’ESSTED sous la thématique  « The how in Design Introspective/prospective design ».

  Archives that matter

  Digital infrastructures for sharing unshared histories in the colonial archives

  2017 marks the centennial for Denmark’s sale of the colony “The Danish West Indies” to the United States, today the US Virgin Islands. For this occasion, archives in Denmark are undertaking a mass-digitisation of their archival records from St. Croix, St. Thomas, St. John, Ghana and the transatlantic enslavement trade. The symposium brings artists and researchers together across geographies to collaboratively innovate and develop “critical fabulations”, transgressive decolonial methodologies and artistic research approaches to open up the digital archives.

  Au cours des trois dernières années, les laboratoires d’excellence (labex) Les passés dans le présent et Patrima (Patrimoines matériels) ont développé des liens de coopération autour des problématiques contemporaines de la recherche sur le(s) patrimoine(s). Ils l’ont fait sur la base de contenus et de dispositifs de recherche qui renouvellent les approches et les méthodes, ouvrant la voie à des pratiques communes de recherche avec les institutions patrimoniales.

  Minorités et cohabitions religieuses du Moyen Âge à nos jours

  La diversité religieuse en Europe s'enracine dans les pratiques des sociétés médiévales. Les dirigeants du Moyen Âge, chrétiens et musulmans, accordèrent des statuts protégés et inférieurs à certaines minorités religieuses. L'étude des sources juridiques montre que les sociétés médiévales, comme la nôtre, ont subi des changements constants en matière religieuse et que la cohabitation, certes pas toujours pacifique, a été la règle plutôt que l'exception dans l'histoire européenne. Le programme de recherche RELMIN, qui travaille depuis 2010 sur l’étude sur le statut légal des minorités religieuses dans les sociétés médiévales, dresse le bilan d’une recherche scientifique approfondi et livre, à l’occasion de ce colloque international, ses observations pour une meilleure compréhension de l’héritage multi-religieux européen.

  Global Art History and the Peripheries

  Established in 2009, Artl@s is a project of a Spatial (Digital) history of arts and letters, providing scholars with the tools and support needed in order to expound their narratives and qualitative evidence with spatial representations and quantitative analyses. The Artl@s team organizes an international conference in partnership with the École normale supérieure, the Institut national d'histoire de l'art and the Terra Foundation for American Art, inviting researchers to gather and develop a removed and well-thought out approach to the question of the peripheries in art history.
