Il propose de les observer au sein d’un corpus spécifique, les fictions climatiques, en les articulant aux concepts d’anthropocène et d’urbanocène.

Bodies in the city: norms and disparities in the 19th century
Arts et savoirs journal on OpenEdition
La recherche en littérature et en sciences humaines – les études dixneuviémistes en particulier – continuent de témoigner régulièrement de l'engouement suscité par la question de la représentation des corps, propice à une multiplicité d'approches et de croisements disciplinaires, qu'ont nourris en particulier les travaux d'Alain Corbin et Georges Vigarello. Les mutations que connaît l'espace urbain au XIXe siècle imposent aux corps de nouvelles normes, dont peuvent faire état le roman réaliste, la littérature dite panoramique ou encore la presse, et définissent dans le même temps de nouvelles marginalités. Dans un contexte qui se caractérise par un renouvellement des méthodes d’observation scientifique, mais aussi par des réaménagements urbains et l'inauguration de nouveaux lieux dans la ville, il s’agira d’interroger la scientificité du regard que porte le XIXe siècle sur les corps voués à occuper cet espace.

The history of cinema viewed through its cinema programs (1894-1930)
Les nombreux documents promotionnels (programmes, affiches, livrets, photographies, objets…), édités dès l’émergence du Kinétoscope en 1894 et du Cinématographe l’année suivante, constituent une source précieuse sur l’évolution du spectacle et de l’industrie du 7e art. Cette journée portera spécifiquement sur les programmes sous toutes leurs formes. Leur analyse détaillée permet de comprendre le déroulé des séances, les techniques mises en œuvre, les « attractions » prévues, les accompagnements musicaux, les horaires, les prix d’entrée, les publics concernés, les personnalités émergentes du monde de l’exploitation, l’architecture des salles, et même les installations intérieures (sièges, orgues, pianos, bars…). Le contenu rédactionnel et iconographique qui s’y déploie magnifie le lieu ou l’événement, mais aussi le nouvel art cinématographique : dessins et effets graphiques, arguments développés avec des typographies soignées, tirages photographiques…

Producing images - noting and drawing dance in the first half of the 19th century
Noter et dessiner la danse dans la première moitié du XIXe siècle
Le XIXe siècle témoigne d’une richesse des expérimentations graphiques visant à représenter et noter la danse. Les ouvrages, partitions ou carnets d’Arthur Saint-Léon, Henri Justamant, Théleur, Carlo Blasis ou G.-Léopold Adice ont été relativement bien étudiés par les chercheurs en danse. La bibliothèque-musée de l’Opéra conserve cependant plusieurs fonds inédits dont un ensemble de croquis, succession de tableaux scéniques, destinés à la reprise à l’Opéra de Paris de plusieurs ballets tels que Zéphire et Flore de Charles Didelot. Outre divers schémas détaillant les déplacements des danseurs, le fonds A.J.J Deshayes est riche de très nombreux dessins qui interrogent les relations entre maître de ballet et décorateur (P. Cicéri et L. Daguerre notamment) et attestent d’un recours à la représentation comme outil de mise en scène et de transmission de ce ballet romantique dont Théophile Gautier louait le « spectacle oculaire ».

In 2018 the international conference “History and Its Images”, organized by the Department of Art History of the European University at St. Petersburg, was dedicated to Francis Haskell’s seminal book of the same title, which greatly influenced the study of the visualization of the past. In 2020 we will host a second conference on the representation of the past in the arts and visual culture. Among the questions to be discussed are: how the visuals art and visual culture produce images of the past, how these images were perceived by the different communities and how they were transformed by the national context of their production.

The transformations of Literature and Art Criticism in periodicals between the 18th and the 21st century
Although unquestionably all-pervasive within the history of modern and contemporary press, the ‘review form’ has been to present an understudied practice. In fact, this multi-faceted, cross-disciplinary form that has persistently accompanied the different phases in the evolution of “print-capitalism” has hardly been analysed from a theoretical perspective. This dismissal by the academic world is certainly peculiar, if not manifestly contradictory; however, it significantly testifies of the difficulty of investigating such a slippery object of study critically.

How do we understand the concept of the future? Is it inevitable and shaped by a long sequence of events and interconnected chance occurrences? Or do we conceive of it as something that is determined by our actions and decisions in the present day? Is it a pure potentiality, a promise of a radically different world and yet unimaginable existence? Or is it something that is forever unreachable, something that defines our experience of the present as a perpetual state of deferral and transience?

The theatre of science-fiction: the first elements of cartography
Dans ce numéro de la revue ReS Futurae, il s’agira d’interroger l’histoire de la science-fiction (SF) au théâtre depuis le XIXe siècle au moins et de réfléchir à l’historiographie du théâtre de science-fiction en France et à l’étranger, en interrogeant les catégories génériques actuellement en usage avec lesquelles le théâtre de science-fiction voisine et/ou que le théâtre de SF subsume (utopie/dystopie, post-apocalypse, etc.). Sur la base d’études de cas, l’ambition est d’assembler les premiers éléments utiles à une cartographie du théâtre de science-fiction.

AWARE: Archives of Women Artists, Research and Exhibitions magazine
L’association AWARE : Archives of Women Artists, Research and Exhibitions a été fondée en juin 2014 afin de rendre visibles les artistes femmes du XXe siècle, notamment par le biais de colloques et journées d’étude, d’un prix, de visites d’expositions et de l’enrichissement d’une plateforme documentaire accessible à tous et toutes. Pour donner de la visibilité aux recherches menées en histoire de l’art, cet appel se concentre sur les artistes femmes asiatiques et/ou ayant un lien significatif avec l’Asie de l’Est (en 2020-2021, l’appel à publication se concentrera sur les artistes femmes d’Asie du Sud et Sud-Est). Les propositions de textes peuvent porter sur des thématiques générales ou des études de cas particuliers, sur des grandes figures pionnières autant que sur des artistes moins reconnues, ou sur un corpus d’artistes femmes, actives au cours du XXe siècle.

The chosen topic for the next issue of RADDAR is the design of interiors and of space, both those located in the private spaces of the home and those within buildings in the public sphere, from museums to airports to shopping malls. While the areas of architecture and products (particularly furniture) have been widely addressed, the interface between them– the interior–has, to date, received very little serious attention. It has been largely left to coffee table books and television programmes to deal with it. However, given its close relationships with so many other design fields, and the important role that it plays in our everyday lives, as well as in the formation of our identities, the opportunity exists to examine interiors from a wide range of perspectives, historical, theoretical and contemporary.

What do pictures do? (In)visibilizing the subaltern
In the wake of the pictorial turn, as individuation processes increasingly involve visual identifications, visibility has become a central paradigm of today’s social imagination. Whether desired, imposed, refused or denied, chosen or endured, visibility is now both an individual injunction and an institutional rationale (Zawadzki), regarded as the vehicle and guardian of social existence (Honneth). Based on these premises, social invisibility characterizes individuals who are excluded from authorized visualities and majority visual discourses, and thus denied access to the social gaze. This conference will explore the process of (in)visibilizing the subaltern in visual culture and visual arts, focusing on three questions: the process of invisibilizing (strategies, apparatuses, institutions); visuality and resistance (counter-visuality, visual sovereignty and the "right to appear"); towards post-visuality (invisibility as tactic?).

Documentary photography and fiction
Si nous avons pour habitude d’opposer ce qui dans les images photographiques relève du document et ce qui procède de la fiction, force est de constater que nombre d'artistes contemporains visent à l'inverse à brouiller les frontières entre ces deux régimes de représentation. Considérant moins le projet documentaire comme une restitution objective et immédiate d'un réel déjà donné que comme un dispositif d'élaboration et d'intellection complexe à imaginer, les photographes rappellent que la fiction, loin de s'opposer au réel peut au contraire le prolonger, être porteuse de référentialité et même posséder une fonction heuristique. Ainsi s'agira-t-il, dans ce dossier de la revue Focales d'examiner les productions qui, dans le champ photographique, tantôt fictionnent le document, tantôt documentent la fiction à des fins de connaissance historique et/ou critique.

Cultural encounters in the nineteenth century
The exhibition The Dutch in Paris, which was on show in the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam and in the Petit Palais, Paris during the fall of 2017 and spring of 2018 respectively, aimed to visualize the artistic exchange between Dutch and French artists between 1789 and 1914. As part of a larger research project, set up by the RKD – Netherlands Institute for Art History, the exhibition generated so much response that ESNA, in collaboration with the RKD and NWO, decided to organize an international conference on the subject, focusing specifically on international as well as national and local points of encounter and how they facilitated artistic exchange.

The essential locus of the workshop has to be enquired into. How is a workshop organized? Which role is given to each of its members? From preparing colours to realising some parts of the painting, from building a mould to pouring liquid bronze into this casting mould, or from drawing a project to managing a work site, which evolution and which autonomy can students benefit from regarding their masters? Vasari has revealed a progressive vision of Art History, which still prevails in the discipline: students are inevitably ending up overstepping their master (Michelangelo and Ghirlandaio) or outshining their father (Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Pietro Bernini in the 17th century). But what about those who were not taken on and those who remained unskilled workers in their lifetime? Was their role really secondary? The ways and means of these artists’ dependence and emancipation regarding their masters, their model, or their technique has to be addressed.

Photography, with or without capitalism
Dès son invention, la photographie s’est trouvée en prise avec les développements du capitalisme : non seulement son expansion dans les années 1870 fut dépendante des développements de l’industrie, mais elle fut aussi l’apanage de la bourgeoisie tout en servant sa reconnaissance symbolique. Ce rapport de contemporanéité, qui traverse l’histoire de la photographie et lui dicte en partie ses fluctuations, constitue presque un ethos de la photographie, s’observant sans discontinuité jusqu’à nos jours, où la question des flux s’applique tant à la circulation de l’argent qu’à celle des images. La photographie est, depuis ses débuts, une image qui répond de la logique libérale. En partant de ce constat, nous pouvons nous demander si les développements esthétiques de la photographie peuvent être gouvernés d’une manière ou d’une autre par son revers économique. Tant sur le mode de la connivence que sur celui de la résistance, il apparaît que bien des tendances formelles découlent de sa familiarité avec la logique capitaliste ou y répondent.
