Artistic Activism in India (History, Practice, Paradigm and Circulation)

“Artivism” encompasses artistic actions, which tackle social and political issues, reviving agitational practises defined in resistance to the planetary ideological hegemony they refer to as neoliberalism. This resurgent awareness of the political nature of artistic creation questions consensual discourses on the neutrality of art and aesthetics, often confined in their "autonomy" and impervious to the disorders of the world. Within artistic activism a dialectic between two entities, traditionally perceived as being of a different nature, is played out: on the one hand the field of art (too often defined as autonomous, with no other functionality than its own) and on the other hand in the field of politics and social activities on the other hand (thought out as a praxis of the exercise of the power in an organized society). The central question posed by artistic activism could be stated in this way: How can we evaluate the capacity of art (visual arts, performing arts, literature, theatre, dance, video art, cinema, etc.) to function as social and political protest?

Image(s) of India

What do we picture when we evoke India? For its 20 th annual Workshop, The “Association des jeunes études indiennes” (AJEI) invites young researchers to share their knowledge and to propose a critical approach of the concept of ‘Images’ in the subcontinent: To what extent do images reflect the many realities and representations of India and how does the Indian imagery affect scholarly, artistic and touristic as well as political perceptions, from a western and an Indian point of view? The Workshop is aimed to develop a cross-disciplinary dialogue in social sciences for a better understanding of the multiple roles that Images have been playing from antiquity to nowadays in the perceptions and the foundations of culture and identities in Indian society. The aim is also to open some reflexive discussions on the use and construction of images.

Multifaceted Inequality in Contemporary India

The "Association des jeunes études indiennes" (AJEI) is a student organization whose members are young researchers coming from various disciplines of the human and social sciences (from masters degree to postdoctoral level) whose area of research is South Asia. Every year, a research seminar in France and a workshop in India bring students and scholars together in order to discuss the topics and papers presented. Since 1998 the AJEI organizes an annual workshop in India with the support of international and local partners. This year we propose a three day workshop with an opening lecture, daily presentations discussed by senior researchers, methodological workshops, and a concluding session. One of our goals is also to interact informally, and build relationships, towards creating a strong international network of researchers.

L'Association jeunes études indiennes (AJEI) organise chaque année des ateliers en Inde, rassemblant jeunes chercheurs et chercheurs confirmés ayant pour aire de recherche l’Asie du Sud. Le thème retenu pour l’édition 2015 des ateliers de l’AJEI est « le genre : politique, travail, droit, développement ». Ces ateliers se veulent une plateforme permettant à de jeunes chercheurs de rendre compte, tant de la manière dont des perspectives de genre apportent un éclairage complémentaire à leur objet d’étude que des contributions de leurs recherches aux débats sur le genre.

Séminaire des jeunes chercheurs de l'association « Jeunes études indiennes » (AJEI)

Le séminaire annuel Jeunes Chercheurs de l’AJEI (Association Jeunes Études Indiennes) a pour objectifs la mise en relation de jeunes chercheurs travaillant sur l'Asie du Sud, qu'ils soient étudiants en master, doctorants ou post-doctorants, ainsi que la rencontre avec des chercheurs plus confirmés, autour de diverses thématiques. Cette année, pour la quatorzième édition, l'AJEI poursuit sa réflexion avec le thème « Normes, textes et pratiques en Asie du Sud », envisagé dans un cadre pluridisciplinaire, et qui pourra concerner à la fois les chercheurs s’intéressant à l’Asie du Sud contemporaine, et les spécialistes du monde indien « ancien ».

Des animaux et des hommes. Héritages partagés, futurs à construire

Colloque sur la modernité des relations hommes / animaux

Ce colloque invite à une réflexion historique, philosophique et anthropologique sur la pluralité des relations que notre société entretient avec les animaux. Il interrogera également les pratiques pour mieux pouvoir imaginer notre devenir commun. Aujourd’hui un débat s’est engagé sur la façon de percevoir, classer, aimer, utiliser, travailler avec les animaux. Depuis l’animal (être singulier et abstrait des animalistes), aux animaux (êtres vivants avec qui nous, êtres humains entretenons des relations multiples et millénaires), il y a une différence notable. D’un point de vue culturel on observe aussi certaines remises en cause de notre modèle alimentaire et de notre régime omnivore avec l’abandon de toutes les nourritures d’origine animale et il nous semble important d'en analyser les fondements.

Sixièmes journées de l'Orient

Les sixièmes journées de l'Orient, organisées par la Société Asiatique, l'Université de Limoges et l'Institut universitaire de France seront consacrées aux risques du voyage. Elles rassembleront des chercheurs venant d'horizons divers (historiens, linguistes, géographes, etc) et proposeront sur ce thème des approches théoriques diverses portant sur des espaces géographiques allant du Moyen-Orient à l'Extrême-Orient et toutes les époques.

Cosmopolitismes de la première modernité

Le cas de l’Asie du Sud (XVIe-XVIIIe siècle). Sources, itinéraires, langues

Ce colloque entend retracer les contours du cosmopolitisme en tant que pratique (rencontre avec d’autres polis) et Weltanschauung (valorisation de la pluralité vécue, définition de soi en lien avec cette pluralité) dans une région du monde – l’Asie du Sud – qui, au cours des XVIe-XVIIIe siècles, constitua non seulement un pôle majeur de l’espace de circulation de l’Asie musulmane mais aussi un nœud des flux humains, matériels et immatériels reliant l’Occident à l’Orient. Terre d’accueil pour de nombreuses élites en quête de patronage, terre d’ancrage pour d’autres que diverses contraintes appellent ailleurs ou encore simple étape au sein de parcours transocéaniques en quête de richesses ou de savoirs, l’Asie du Sud de la première modernité apparaît dans tous les cas comme un terrain particulièrement propice à la construction d’identités et de visions cosmopolites, tant au niveau individuel qu’à celui de la polis.

The Globalization of Production Models and Innovation in Emerging Economies

Comparative Research on Subnational Industrial Policies

This seminar will bring together scholars examining research themes pertaining to the evolution of production models in regions of India and China, in relation to the progressive opening of these large economies to trade and FDI. Of particular interest are industrial and innovation policies emerging at the state or provincial level and the manner in which these public policies interact with firm-level strategies in pursuit of more broad-based development goals. Apart from the keynote session, five thematic sessions are planned: Upgrading Regional Industries in India and China; Subnational Industrial Policies in India and China; Social Dimensions of Regional Industrial Performance; Articulating industrial policies between central and local levels; Industrial Districts and Regional Policies.
