Artistic Activism in India (History, Practice, Paradigm and Circulation)
“Artivism” encompasses artistic actions, which tackle social and political issues, reviving agitational practises defined in resistance to the planetary ideological hegemony they refer to as neoliberalism. This resurgent awareness of the political nature of artistic creation questions consensual discourses on the neutrality of art and aesthetics, often confined in their "autonomy" and impervious to the disorders of the world. Within artistic activism a dialectic between two entities, traditionally perceived as being of a different nature, is played out: on the one hand the field of art (too often defined as autonomous, with no other functionality than its own) and on the other hand in the field of politics and social activities on the other hand (thought out as a praxis of the exercise of the power in an organized society). The central question posed by artistic activism could be stated in this way: How can we evaluate the capacity of art (visual arts, performing arts, literature, theatre, dance, video art, cinema, etc.) to function as social and political protest?

Gender Dynamics and Practices in Architecture, Urbanism and Landscape Architecture
In France, as in several other countries, the professions of architect, urban planner and landscape architect have crossed a historic threshold in terms of feminization. However, numerical parity does not mean men and women have equal professional opportunities: numerous demands of feminist associations remain unsatisfied. They note the persistence of many professional inequalities: in terms of income, in terms of financial control and job insecurity, in terms of visibility, and in terms of recognition. This call for papers aims to gather contributions for an assessment of the gains and limits of feminization and gender dynamics at work in the professional worlds of architecture, urban planning and landscape architecture in France, fifty years after the "massive" entry of women into architecture schools in 1968.

In 1990, Judith Butler published Gender Trouble; a book which takes from French Theory to create an other, the Queer Theory, which does not bother with anatomical or social destiny to put forward the performativity of gender and of sexe. Quickly translated in many languages, Gender Trouble will have a very noticeable impact on literary and movie studies, rapidly generating a heuristic acting out. Paradoxically, the same can not be said about aesthetic studies. Why? What are the oppositions? How can the queer way of thinking give back their inherent infinite “openness” to works of art?

Urban memories in images?
Premier jalon d’un programme de recherche exploratoire intitulé « Des contre-regards documentaires ? Les mondes urbains photographiés et filmés par les femmes » porté par le collectif Penser l’urbain par l’image du Labex Futurs Urbains, cette journée d’étude vise à interroger la transmission d'une mémoire urbaine des femmes s'appuyant sur des pratiques de documentation visuelle, et en particulier sur le film et la photographie. A partir d'un ensemble de projections, de présentations d'ouvrages et de performances à la croisée de l'art et de la recherche en sciences humaines et sociales, elle questionnera la portée féministe d'images produites et/ou regardées par des femmes depuis leur expérience urbaine.

What it meant to be a Parisienne in the Ancien Régime: women in the city

Dans un billet récent paru dans le Journal du CNRS, le géographe Yves Raibaud formule le constat que la ville du XXIe siècle est « une ville faite pour les garçons ». Si un regard genré sur l’espace urbain permet aujourd’hui d’interroger les pratiques et les politiques de laville, que peut nous apprendre l’histoire sur la place, l’activité et les représentations des femmes dans la ville ? Notre colloque voudrait ainsi, à partir d’approches pluridisciplinaires, penser les liens entre femmes et ville du Moyen Âge à la fin du XVIIIe siècle. Paris, en tant que centre urbain majeur et ville capitale du royaume, mais aussi en tant que creuset privilégié des modèles sociaux et culturels français, apparaît comme un lieu à la fois exemplaire et singulier pour tenter cette approche.

Gender and urban planning - cityscapes through the prism of male-female relationships
Usages et aménagements de la ville au prisme des rapports hommes / femmes
Cette journée d’étude interdisciplinaire réunit des chercheuses européennes afin de discuter d’une part la question de l’appropriation genrée de l’espace public, et d’autre part celle des normes de genre inhérentes aux modes de construction et d’aménagement des villes. Cette journée a pour ambition de croiser les regards entres géographes, sociologues, urbanistes et historiennes interrogeant la ville, le droit à la ville. A-t-on vraiment, partout, dépassé la ville genrée, une ville ouverte à tous et toutes ? Ou, au contraire, assiste-t-on a une banalisation des interactions conflictuelles dans les espaces urbains, dont les grandes métropoles, villes denses ?

Comment les hommes et les femmes homosexuel.les en Europe ont-ils vécu la seconde guerre mondiale? Comment commémorer les persécutions subies?
ll est désormais connu que durant la seconde guerre mondiale, des personnes homosexuelles ont été arrêtées et déportées en Allemagne. Cependant, des politiques anti-homosexuelles ont aussi été développées dans plusieurs pays d’Europe. Jusqu’à aujourd’hui, les modalités de ces politiques, l’ampleur des persécutions et la manière dont les villes et les États européens élaborent la mémoire de cette période n’ont été que peu questionnées. Et cela, alors que des monuments commémoratifs en souvenir des victimes homosexuelles sont de plus en plus nombreux à travers notre continent.

Transnational, Transhistorical Perspectives
This international conference on carnival will bring together historians, anthropologists, and sociologists to explore the links between carnival and politics as showcased by carnivals in Europe, North America, the Caribbean and Latin America. The purpose of the meeting will be twofold: (1) discuss the evolution of "carnival studies" since the publication of Bakhtin’s Rabelais and His World fifty years ago; (2) use case studies covering a wide range of geographical areas and historical periods (from the Renaissance to the 21st century) to produce a coherent synthesis of the relationship between carnival and politics.

The quality of nightlife in European cities has become a real political challenge in recent years. The turning point in the decision of regulating urban temporalities was The General States of the Night in Paris (2010) and in Geneva (2011). New lifestyles, the desynchronisation of social time with individual rhythms, the disruption oftraditional couplework/leisureinself-realizationand competitiveness between governors about urban marketing, explain this new point of view about urban life. Nowadays, how is nocturnal urban space occupied in central areas of large cities, but also in fringes? What does this gradual conquest of urban night-life mean ? How do we speak of everyday acceptanceand massive expansion in access to these nights? How can nightlife be appeased ?

Sociolinguistics and urbanisation: the foundations and refoundations of a discipline

Si l’on peut admettre que la sociolinguistique urbaine procède (comme d’autres disciplines du champ des recherches sociales) du tournant de la spatialité et de ce fait d’une quasi-médiation épistémique des concepts de la sociolinguistique générale, on ne doit pas, par ailleurs, faire l’économie de conceptualisations spécifiques la concernant tout autant que de la penser dans une tradition de recherche fructueuse. Les ateliers de recherche ont pour objectif d’organiser régulièrement des moments de réflexion collective autour des questions fondatrices de la sociolinguistique confrontées à des dynamiques socio-langagières émergentes et à des réalités sociales prégnantes. Il sera question de construire l’épistémologie de la sociolinguistique urbaine en tant que sociolinguistique des discours etdes formes de pluralités.

Pluralités linguistiques et discriminations socio-langagières
Les séminaires ont lieu en général sur le campus Villejean de Rennes 2. Le séminaire a lieu le vendredi après-midi de 14h à 17h, une fois par mois de décembre à mai. La participation à ces séminaires fait partie de la formation des doctorants du PREFics- DYNADDLIF (ex-CREDILIF) ainsi que des étudiants de Master 2 Francophonie et échanges interculturels. Les étudiants du Master 1 y sont invités ainsi que tous les membres des laboratoires du PREFics. Le séminaire est ouvert à d’autres publics, notamment doctorants de Rennes 2 mais aussi des collègues d’autres unités de recherche et d'autres universités. Doing Gender 10 – Current Challenges of Feminisms, Thematic Symposia n°076
Historically, the Gay Liberation Movement emerged as a collective wish for social transformation regarding sexual practice, sex roles, gender prescriptions and the privitization/commodification of relationships. The movement was situated in a context of other movements for visionary social change regarding race, citizenship, women’s autonomy, children’s rights, national identity, regional self-determination and a revolution in the distribution of wealth. The AIDS crisis propelled a profound transformation of the LGBT community from a political movement to a consumer group. Abrupt changes in media representation, psychological consequences of the mass death experience, and the impact of widespread loss of generations and individuals in traumatic and sudden ways resulted in the grassroots Gay Liberation Movement fading into history, to be replaced by a Gay Rights Movement, controlled from the top down by national organizations with paid staff and LGBT individuals situated within ruling political parties, lobbying from within the cultural frameworks of those constructions. This confluence of Rights and Nation States, lead to what Rutgers Professor Jasbir Puar called “Homonationalism”, the granting of Gay Rights in the service of state interests rooted in supremacy ideology about race, gender, class and ethnicity. -

Call for the 3rd issue of the journal Justice Spatiale / Spatial Justice
La revue en ligne bilingue Justice Spatial/Spatial Justice (www.jssj.org) consacre son troisième numéro à la question du genre et des identités sexuelles, appréhendés dans leurs nombreuses dimensions spatiales. Le propositions d'articles (3000 signes au plus) doivent nous parvenir pour le 30 novembre 2009, les articles complets avant le 20 mars 2010, pour une parution à l'automne 2010.
