"Precious memories". The history of the imagery of devotion in Europe

Le Saulchoir s’est établi progressivement comme point de passage obligé pour l’étude des différents objets de dévotion. La collection des images de dévotion compte plus de 200 000 pièces classées. L’organisation de la source en corpus invite à creuser maintes questions : sur le rôle d’Anvers, d’Augsbourg puis de Paris, sur les illustrateurs (l’image fut un débouché en France pour Azambre, les Nazaréens ou Bouguereau), sur les sujets traités et les copies d’œuvres d’art (notamment par l’Art catholique), sur les lettres ou citations qui donnent une idée des auteurs dont la réputation est consacrée. Si cette collection a suscité en France des rencontres nationales et internationales d’un intérêt indiscutable, elle n’est pas suffisamment mise en valeur. Le colloque que nous organisons voudrait commencer à combler cette lacune en réunissant des chercheurs européens spécialistes de ces questions. Une large place sera également accordée aux collectionneurs.

Dressing Divinely: clothed or naked deities an devotees

The XVII International Colloquium of the Association ARYS (Antiquity, Religions and Societies) is dedicated to the study of the links between religious identity and clothing within the framework of ancient societies and religions, from the perspective of the images either of the gods or of their devotees. Within the topic of religious clothing will be included the religious use of clothes and attributes, accesories, ornaments, body modifications such as mutilations or tattoos, hairstyles, nudity and, of course, the action itself of dressing or undressing, its conception and positive, neutral or negative consideration, or the act of assuming any of those human or divine complements, adornments, attributes or modifications of the body. We welcome the participation of consolidated as well as early-career specialists in the field of ancient history, archaeology, religious sciences, art history and historiography of religions.

Les historiens de l’Antiquité ont admis le caractère profondément pluriel des pratiques religieuses qui sont articulées, en particulier, au politique, au culturel ou encore aux modèles éducatifs. Or le lien entre religion et spectacle, souvent évoqué dans les études sur les religions anciennes, n’a suscité à ce jour que peu d’études approfondies. Il s’agira pour le colloque de s’interroger sur les modalités de participation des acteurs du rituel en prenant en compte ce que nous pourrions appeler le caractère « spectaculaire » des célébrations religieuses.

Reform: what heritage for Europe?

Historiographical assessment

Il s'agit, lors de cette journée, de lancer une vaste réflexion sur l'héritage de la Réforme dans le contexte européen. Des chercheurs de France, d'Allemagne, de Suède et de Norvège dresseront un bilan historiographique et analyseront les schémas de « sécularisation » qui se sont développés en terres protestantes et catholiques. La manifestation se poursuivra le lendemain avec une table ronde réunissant des jeunes chercheurs (mastérants et doctorants) qui présenteront leurs recherches. Ce projet comprend également une série de séminaires (2016-2017) et un colloque prévu à l'automne 2017.

This conference is jointly organized by the Catholic University of Angers (Faculty of Humanities) and the University of Lausanne (Department of History of Art). It aims to analyse in greater detail the spaces of the transept and to explore their relation(s) with the choir / heart of the church. This two-day international and interdisciplinary symposium will work towards bringing together and assessing the results, often dispersed, of past and present research, building upon debates involving specialists from multiple backgrounds and finishing with a round table which will propose a summary of the papers and explore further insights into new research directions.

Eroticism and sexuality in the performance arts

Workshops for young researchers: eroticism and ethnoscenology

Armindo Biao (co-fondateur de l’ethnoscénologie, université Fédérale de Bahia) avait entrepris un projet de recherche sur les fondements de l’imaginaire érotique dans les arts du spectacle vivant auquel étaient associé(e)s les jeunes chercheur(e)s du réseau-ethnoscénologie et de la Société française d’ethnoscénologie. Les journées d’étude des 23 et 24 octobre 2014 sont l’occasion de lui rendre hommage. Alors que de nombreux travaux portent sur les origines rituelles du spectacle vivant, ses fondements érotiques restent le plus souvent ignorés ou sous-estimés. Quels sont les fondements qui dans toutes les sociétés associent le spectacle vivant à l’érotisme et à la sexualité aussi bien qu’au politique et aux croyances ? Comment les analyser dans les perspectives de l’ethnoscénologie ?

Immaterial heritage culture: from inventory to governance

La notion de patrimoine culturel immatériel (PCI) introduite par l’UNESCO en 2003 a amené à repenser la place des témoins et des chercheurs dans la construction des objets scientifiques. La France ayant ratifié la « Convention pour la sauvegarde du Patrimoine Culturel Immatériel » en juillet 2006, cette nouvelle notion a progressivement trouvé un écho au sein du tissu associatif français et dans les dispositifs publics et les organigrammes des collectivités territoriales et des services déconcentrés du Ministère de la culture dans les régions (DRAC). C’est dans cette dynamique qu’a été mis en œuvre, dès 2008, un inventaire du PCI en Aquitaine par le laboratoire ITEM de l’UPPA et l’ethnopôle InOc Aquitaine, comptant parmi les toutes premières expériences en France. Ce colloque, organisé à Pau du 15 au 17 mai, sera plus particulièrement l’occasion de revenir sur ces sept années d’expérimentation de la notion d’inventaire et de les mettre en perspective avec d’autres entreprises conduites en France et dans le monde.

The Transnationalization of Religion through Music

The transnationalization of religion refers to the relocalization of beliefs, rituals and religious practices beyond state lines, in real or symbolic spaces, with the help of new imaginaries and narrative identities. Although the analysis of religious transnationalization has revealed the various ways religion transcends borders, the role of music in this process is rarely addressed. Yet this role is essential in the transnationalization of universal religions like Islam and Christianity. Music also contributes to the migration of local religions, neotraditionalist movements, and cults associated with a particular area, such as Haitian Voodoo, Cuban Santería, or Brazilian Candomble. Such musical phenomena, far from being new, gave birth to early religious globalizations.
