Espace public / espace(s) privé(s) à la lumière des « printemps arabes »
À rebours des représentations officielles, médiatiques et néo-orientalistes de la division entre espace public/espace(s) privé(s), l’objectif de ce huitième colloque du Cercle des chercheurs sur le Moyen-Orient (CCMO) est d’analyser leurs chevauchements, leurs imbrications et interactions, voire leur caractère interchangeable : un espace privé étant susceptible à tout moment de se muer en espace public et inversement, un espace public pouvant épouser des logiques de privatisation et d’appropriation particulariste par un clan, une milice, une faction ou encore des groupes porteurs de causes spécifiques liées au genre, à la classe d’âge, à l’origine sociale ou encore à l’appartenance locale. Ce colloque invite à complexifier et à déconstruire cette opposition rigide entre espace public au singulier et espaces privés au pluriel, en interrogeant notamment la manière dont le politique se déploie dans des espaces privés ou semi-privés.

Religions and transnational migrations (19th-20th centuries)
Depuis vingt-cinq ans, la question migratoire est prégnante dans le discours politique et médiatique, suscitant débat, interrogation, mais aussi travaux scientifiques. Si les chercheurs ont investi ce champ d’étude, l’analyse des interactions du phénomène avec le religieux est plus récente, mais souligne la place centrale qu’a pu occuper la religion dans les processus migratoires – aux origines de la migration, comme support de celle-ci, comme ressource à la fois spirituelle et sociale pour les déplacés –, et les transformations du religieux qu’ils induisent. La réflexion historique sur les articulations entre religion et migration dans le cadre transnational est à même de compléter ces travaux des sociologues, anthropologues, géographes et théologiens. Aussi, l’Association française d'histoire religieuse (AFHRC) a choisi d’y consacrer sa journée d’étude annuelle. On considèrera les grands mouvements de population à l’époque contemporaine (XIXe-XXe siècles), forcés ou volontaires, sans exclure l’exil ni les migrations plus ponctuelles.

The Writ of Dynasties and Nation-States in the Middle East and South Asia
Max Weber famously argued that states lay claim to the monopoly of the legitimate use of violence over certain circumscribed territories. However, historical and anthropological research has challenged his ideal-typical vision by showing how the idea of the unitary state is a fiction that can only be produced through the action of interrelated but partly autonomous agents. States, and the various institutions that constitute them, face the strategic task of identifying and domesticating the social networks that are necessary for them to secure control over particular territories and their populations. Local strongmen and notables can in turn use their own local influence in order to gain recognition from higher-level, more powerful, state institutions. In this international conference, scholars from a variety of disciplines will explore the ways in which dynastic power and/or the rule of the state is asserted, negotiated and contested across both the Middle East and South Asia.

Contemporary Amman and the Right to the City
A city of four million inhabitants today, Amman’s expansion has become disproportionate to its urban history. Amman has experienced an impressive urban growth over the past fifty years, driven by forced migration and market laws. Developing from a small rural settlement at the end of the 19th century, Amman evolved into a regional crossroad at the end of the 20th century, and has become today a symbol for the consolidation of Hashemite rule, and as a result, the site of its contestation. Amman’s exceptional position among other regional capitals and its recent urban history has forced its inhabitants to create narratives concerning the city’s foundation, invent urban traditions, and negotiate ways of socialization.

La Fondation Croix-Rouge française est une fondation de recherche dédiée à l’action humanitaire et sociale. Reconnue d’utilité publique (FRUP), elle porte la volonté de la Croix-Rouge française de promouvoir la connaissance scientifique, la réflexion éthique et l’innovation sociale pour faire avancer l’action au service des plus vulnérables. La Fondation a pour objectif de mobiliser la communauté scientifique à proximité des populations en souffrance, au Nord comme au Sud, pour apporter des réponses concrètes et durables. Dans cette optique, elle finance et accompagne des chercheurs francophones indépendants, en priorité issus des terrains d’intervention, par l’attribution de bourses postdoctorales en sciences humaines et sociales.

Contemporary ethnographic research in the Middle East
Many parts of the contemporary Middle East are confronted with war, sectarianism, transnational interferences, uprisings, and a comeback of authoritarian regimes. This brings about various difficulties for ethnographic research as a practice of knowledge production based on the immersion of researchers in given social contexts and the subsequent writing up and publishing of texts. The international conference No country for anthropologists? Contemporary ethnographic research in the Middle East explores the obstacles to do ethnography in the Middle East and take them as the starting point for reflection upon the role of anthropology with a view to the Middle East of today.

This conference aims to revisit the notion of cosmopolitanism in Gulf cities and other regional areas from a comparative perspective. It will be a unique opportunity for scholars of the Gulf and other world regions to engage with cosmopolitanism or otherwise probe the intersection of global studies, urban studies and migration studies from a range of disciplines. More specifically, panels will be organized around the following research themes:“cosmopolitan canopy”, cosmopolitanism in theoretical and comparative perspectives, new geographies of cosmopolitanism in Gulf cities.

Time, Space, and Power in Qualitative Research on the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) Region and Europe
Since the start of the 21st century seemingly unpredictable change, in all its different guises, has fueled the preoccupations of academic and non-academic publics. The financial crisis, the “Arab Spring”, protest movements in southern Europe, the rise of Daesh and right-wing populism, as well as the environmental crisis all make it very difficult to rely on Francis Fukuyama’s theory of “end of history”, which now seems to merely reflect the euphoria of liberal elites following the collapse of the Soviet Union (1992). This workshop intends to reflect more closely on the webs of power affecting both the researcher and‚ the researched when they intend to represent change.

Partant du constat largement partagé d'une exposition aussi nombreuse que diverse des figures de martyrs dans les espaces publics de pays musulmans, cette journée d'étude se consacre à l'analyse des processus de fabrication (peintures, photographies, pochoirs, images numériques...), des supports d'affichage (murs, musées, internet) ainsi qu'à la mise en rapport de ces productions par-delà les singularités des pays, des conflits et des mythologies, pour en interroger le sens et les évolutions.

Visual arts in Islam lands: new approaches, new issues
Ce dossier thématique a pour objectif de dresser une cartographie de la recherche portant sur les arts plastiques modernes et contemporains dans les pays où l’islam est la principale référence religieuse. À la différence du cinéma, du théâtre ou de la littérature, les arts visuels contemporains ont peu bénéficié de l’attention des chercheurs, et ce malgré un renouveau d’intérêt alimenté par l’actualité socio-politique des « révolutions arabes ». Nous proposons d’étudier les différents ensembles disciplinaires à partir desquels se développent les recherches sur l’art contemporain en examinant les méthodes et les outils d’analyse qui ont été utilisés depuis l’émergence de l’art moderne au Maghreb et au Moyen-Orient.

Les restes et leur traitement ont une valeur heuristique originale pour les sciences sociales. C’est tout au moins la position que nous entendons défendre dans ce séminaire. Englobant le sujet des déchets, mais loin de s’y limiter, ce séminaire réunira des chercheurs issus de plusieurs disciplines provenant de terrains proches ou éloignés autour de la problématique du « reste », envisagée non seulement comme « revers de la production », mais aussi comme un objet associant fortement les dimensions pratiques et symboliques.

From the Caucasus to the Arabian Peninsula: studying domestic spaces in the Neolithic
Under neolithisation scholars understand multiple processes of social and economic transformation which begin at different times and follow regional trends in the Near and Middle East. It is within the complex relational and spatial framework of the household that these shifts in the structure and activities of Neolithic communities are easiest to apprehend and study. The conference will therefore focus on the domestic sphere in order to highlight and understand the polymorphous nature of what we call neolithisation. Various thematic sessions will be held to shed new light on current data: “Impacts of the shift to a sedentary/semi-sedentary lifestyle”; “Organising the house and the household”; “Private space/public space”; “Acquisition, production, transformation and use”; “Eating-Moving”; “Symbolic manifestations”;“The living and the dead”.

Ce colloque aborde la question des mutations sociales qui sont en œuvre dans les villes sahariennes. L’urbanisation de ces dernières années atteste de la vitalité d’un phénomène bouleversant en profondeur les modes de vie, les structures sociales et les économies oasiennes. Lieux de nouvelles urbanités où les liens sociaux se recomposent, elles sont traversées par des tensions qui tiennent tant aux contextes locaux, aux conflits régionaux, qu’à celui de la globalisation. Le colloque permettra de faire le point sur les recherches en cours et réfléchira sur de nouvelles pistes de recherche. Les différents champs disciplinaires s’intéressant à la ville seront convoqués pour permettre une présentation, une confrontation, un croisement des différentes approches.

Geopolitical and anthropological approaches
Les problématiques liées à l’extraction des hydrocarbures sont peu traitées ou maltraitées par les sciences sociales, en particulier à propos des pays en développement. Il apparaît donc nécessaire d’affiner des analyses qui sont trop souvent orientées par des présupposés déterministes ou idéologiques telles que la malédiction pétrolière (oil curse) ou la maladie hollandaise (dutch disease). Dans une perspective comparatiste et pluridisciplinaire qui a pour ambition de croiser les regards des anthropologues, des sociologues, des politologues, des économistes et des géographes, ce colloque vise ainsi à enrichir la réflexion en conviant des spécialistes de plusieurs pays à parler de cas d’études comme l’Irak, le Nigeria, l’Algérie, le golfe Arabo-Persique, la Colombie, le Venezuela, le Mexique, la Libye, etc.

Workshop “GIS Moyen-Orient et Mondes musulmans”
Dans les mondes arabes et musulmans, le salon désigne un espace hybride dont les fonctions sociales ont profondément évolué au cours du XXe siècle. Inclus au sein de l’espace domestique ou séparé de celui-ci, il constitue un lieu de représentation dont l’acteur principal est une famille ou un individu. Si de nombreux travaux se sont penchés sur les différentes formes de « salon » en tant qu’institutions productrices et régulatrices d’ordres sociaux et politiques, l’objectif de cet atelier est d’interroger cet espace composite comme scène de l’ordre et du désordre. Nous souaithons examiner les manières d’investir cet espace comme lieu de projection d’identités culturelles, politiques et religieuses, selon des contextes ordinaires ou extraordinaires. Pour ce faire, nous porterons une attention particulière aux modalités concrètes de transformation du « salon » : d’espace domestique en espace public (religieux et politiques) et inversement.

Cette université populaire permet à celles et ceux qui le souhaitent d’approfondir leurs connaissances et leurs réflexions grâce à des sessions de formation animés par des spécialistes (universitaires, chercheurs, journalistes, acteurs de terrain, etc.). Ces sessions ont lieu un samedi par mois et sont chacune composées de trois conférences.

Rethinking Sudan Studies after the Independence of South Sudan
At this time of shifting foundations in Sudan, which became two separate Sudan republics with the 2011 secession of the south, we invite historians, anthropologists, linguists, political scientists and others to engage in a similar process of rethinking. Two questions stand behind this undertaking. First, can we continue to speak and write about a single "Sudan Studies" field now that a split has occurred? And second, what has Sudan Studies been, and how must it or should it change? Answering the latter question may help to address what some critics have described as the insularity of the scholarship on the region: a tendency to describe the Sudan and Sudanese states as having been unique and incomparable relative to other places and polities (Willis 2001; Vezzadini 2012).

Beyond dichotomies: the Sudan, from the formation of the country to southern independence, 1869-2011
Cette journée d’étude voudrait proposer une réflexion sur la complexité de l’histoire soudanaise, de l'émergence d'une entité politique unifiée au temps de la domination ottomano-égyptienne (1820-1881) jusqu'à la sécession du Sud-Soudan en 2011. Le Soudan est décrit dans les média et dans les rapports des organisations humanitaires comme le pays des dichotomies : sud contre nord, arabes contre africains, musulmans contre chrétiens. Mais cette vision est profondément trompeuse. Le Soudan, qui, avant l’indépendance toute récente du Sud, était le plus grand pays d’Afrique, comptant des dizaines de langues et des centaines de dialectes et une immense hétérogénéité dans sa géographie humaine, est plutôt le pays de la complexité. Cette journée va explorer cette complexité de deux points de vue principaux : celle de ses interactions avec l’extérieur, et celle de ses mécanismes identitaires.
