  The Pillars of Rule

  The Writ of Dynasties and Nation-States in the Middle East and South Asia

  Max Weber famously argued that states lay claim to the monopoly of the legitimate use of violence over certain circumscribed territories. However, historical and anthropological research has challenged his ideal-typical vision by showing how the idea of the unitary state is a fiction that can only be produced through the action of interrelated but partly autonomous agents. States, and the various institutions that constitute them, face the strategic task of identifying and domesticating the social networks that are necessary for them to secure control over particular territories and their populations. Local strongmen and notables can in turn use their own local influence in order to gain recognition from higher-level, more powerful, state institutions. In this international conference, scholars from a variety of disciplines will explore the ways in which dynastic power and/or the rule of the state is asserted, negotiated and contested across both the Middle East and South Asia.

  This project will explore how young Chinese cosplayers engage with the public at large to express new identities in spaces that are heavily regulated by social and political censoring mechanisms. On the one hand, this doctoral research will explore the structural organisation of Chinese cosplay (associations, conventions); on the other hand, it will look into specific bodily performances in public spaces.

S’adressant en priorité à des doctorants en fin de thèse et à des postdoctorants, ces bourses sont destinées à reprendre des premières enquêtes de terrain en vue d’approfondir des recherches déjà engagées (chapitres de thèse etc.). Les problématiques doivent apporter une perspective originale et novatrice sur l’Asie du Sud-Est, relevant des champs disciplinaires suivants : sciences politiques, sciences économiques, sciences sociales (anthropologie, sociologie, géographie, histoire contemporaine).

  Singapour mon amour : The emergence and vicissitudes of an art scene

  This colloquium proposes a theoretical perspective on the visual art, film, performance and literature modules of the project Singapour mon amour curated by Lowave. Thematic sessions according to these art genres will draw a bigger picture of the artistic creation in Singapore and will inscribe it into an international art discourse. As a young country, Singapore's art history is still the process of being written and the colloquium aims to collect as many direct sources and witnesses as possible.

  Islands, heritage and ethnicity in the Indian-Oceanic region

  Cette journée d’étude, propose, à partir de cas détaillés, une lecture des reformulations historiques et des processus de patrimonialisation ; la constitution d’un patrimoine agissant tantôt comme un élément concourant à l’ethnicisation des rapports sociaux, tantôt à une sorte de « réconciliation nationale ». Les intervenants, géographes, cinéastes, anthropologues et ethnologues montreront que les préoccupations intellectuelles des acteurs de la patrimonialisation ne sont pas nécessairement celles de la population générale et viseront à déconstruire les éléments de rationalisations et de légitimations en référence aux notions fourre-tout de « tradition » et d' «identité » liée à cette politique de patrimonialisation – la préoccupation identitaire s'inscrivant dans le contexte de la globalisation des cultures et du pluralisme culturel, géré plus ou moins différemment par les sociétés insulaires de l’aire indianocéanique.
