  François Mitterand and territorial anchoring

  From the Republic of the province the republic of territories

  La relation de François Mitterrand au territoire revêt de multiples dimensions : politique, sociale, mais aussi culturelle voire esthétique du fait de son attachement bien connu aux sites et paysages. Examiner son parcours à travers le prisme de l'ancrage territorial, c'est donc tenir compte aussi bien des préoccupations et de la sensibilité du personnage, que des fonctions qu'il a exercées à tous les niveaux de la vie politique. Son attachement à sa « province » se dévoile ainsi dans toute sa complexité et nécessite de prêter attention à sa vie privée comme à sa vie publique. Cette approche ouvre plusieurs pistes de réflexion qui viendront structurer ce colloque : la place des territoires et de la ruralité dans les représentations et le pouvoir mitterrandien, le rapport entre ancrage local et carrière nationale, enfin la politique territoriale de François Mitterand des conceptions politiques aux modalités d'action publique dans le domaine de la réforme de l'État.

  Historical and anthropological perspectives on the politics of the repatriation of foreigners

  Ces journées d’études portent sur l’importance systémique de la question du retour des étrangers en situation irrégulière dans la construction des politiques publiques, à l’échelle nationale, européenne et internationale. Les usages contemporains de l’expulsion – typiquement, des étrangers renvoyés par un État dans leur pays d’origine ou dans un pays tiers, certains frappés par une interdiction, provisoire ou définitive, de retourner dans le pays qui les a expulsés – seront envisagés à l’aune d’un large champ de politiques et de pratiques de renvoi et/ou de déplacement forcé, qui ont contribué à la définition de la citoyenneté et à la délimitation des prérogatives associées à l’exercice de la souveraineté.

  The making of cultural policies

  Trans-Acting Matters: Areas and Eras of a (Post-)Ottoman Globalization

  This workshop takes place in the framework of the research project “Trans-Acting Matters: Areas and Eras of a (Post-)Ottoman Globalization”. It aims to analyse the making of cultural policies and actions in Turkey and the post-ottoman spaces. We wish to question the ways in which the circulations participate in the construction of cultural policies today as well as to rethink the earlier cultural policies and actions from the late Ottoman Empire onwards. The workshop attempts to question the co-production of cultural policies, of their spaces and territories, as well as the plurality of the conceptions of culture carried by cultural policies. The workshop will focus on the phenomena of hybridity, of connections, and associations of various actors which co-produce original forms of cultural policies.

  The 2-day International Conference "Policing Empires: Social Control, Political Transition, (Post-)Colonial Legacies", to be held in Brussels in December 2013, will be the last in a series of events convened by the GERN Working Group on (Post-)Colonial Policing. Building on previous explorations of policing, surveillance and security experiences in colonial contexts, the aim of this final conference is to promote a multi-sited and comparative approach to colonial policing practices and their legacies in the postcolonial world.

  Foreign Language Film Conference V

  Submissions are invited for the fifth Foreign Language Film Conference, on the theme of Rights and Representations. In this historic setting of the American South, and in conjunction with Birmingham's 50th anniversary remembrance of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church bombing, FLFC celebrates civil and human rights. Scholars will consider the question of civil rights in international cinematic traditions. How does film as an art and a genre represent civil rights, and human rights? What are the places of rebellion, terrorism, or non-violent resistance in forging individual freedoms, and how is this reflected in national cinematic traditions? How do international films address issues of discrimination, violence, repression, the struggle for social equality ? On the pedagogical side of the question, how do films about civil rights teach their viewers about international cultural and political traditions and movements ? How are these films incorporated into classroom discussions of global civil rights ?

  Palestinians and Israelis: Two Decades After Oslo

  Anatomy, lived experience and the movements of separation

  Organisé par Stéphanie Latte Abdallah (IREMAM) et Cédric Parizot (IREMAM), ce colloque constitue la troisième rencontre du projet jeunes chercheurs « Mobilités frontières et conflits dans les espaces israélo-palestiniens », soutenu par la région Provence Alpes Côte-d’Azur et l’Agence nationale de la recherche. Le colloque est organisé en partenariat scientifique avec l’Institut de recherches et d’études sur le monde arabe et musulman (IREMAM), l’Institut d’ethnologie européenne et comparative (IDEMEC), Migrations internationales, espaces et sociétés (MIGRINTER), La Maison méditerranéenne des sciences de l’homme (MMSH-USR 3125), le Centre de recherche français à Jérusalem (CRFJ) et le programme MIMED (Lieux et territoires des migrations en Méditerranée XIXe-XXIe siècle). Il réunira une trentaine de chercheurs et de doctorants, français, palestiniens, suisses, italiens, jordaniens et israéliens.
