The Norman worlds in geographical knowledge and travel accounts (9th-16th centuries)
Cet appel à contirbution de la revue Tabularia est dédié à un dossier thématique sur la littérature géographique et aux récits de voyages relatifs aux mondes normands médiévaux. Ce dossier envisage une chronologie large, de la période carolingienne aux « Grandes découvertes (IXe-XVIe siècle) et une gamme étendue de textes : itinéraires, récits ou guides de voyages ou de pèlerinages, descriptions géographiques incluses dans des œuvres narratives (chroniques, hagiographies, sagas…), littérature encyclopédique, récits de croisades, relations d’ambassadeurs et de missionnaires, guide et correspondances des marchands, récits d’explorateurs, voire même de voyageurs imaginaires. L’objectif est de s’interroger sur la part des connaissances nouvelles et celle des emprunts, la circulation des savoirs géographiques, leur mise en œuvre dans les textes, la mise en ordre des connaissances, les intentions qui guident les auteurs ou les commanditaires, les images véhiculées par les textes, les illustrations (cartes, miniatures…) qui les accompagnent éventuellement.

On 13, 14 and 15 November 2019, the II International Congress of Young Researchers in Middle Ages (ICYRMA) will take place at the University of Évora, Portugal. ICYRMA is destinated to students at master, doctoral and postdoctoral level and/or to those who have obtained their academic degrees in the last five years. It aims to be an interdisciplinary space for dissemination, discussion and contact among young researchers who study the Middle Ages from various perspectives: history, archeology, art history, literature, philosophy, philology, anthropology, ethnology, sociology, geography, methodology, among other areas.

The French Journal of Medieval English Studies BAM is seeking submissions for a special issue focusing on the notion of “revolution”. The word “revolution” does not appear in English before the 14th century. The word is borrowed from French revolucion, derived from the Latin revolvere. In medieval Latin the meaning of revolutio becomes both scientific and religious as it describes the movement of celestial bodies and the transmigration of souls (metempsychosis). The first known occurrence of the word “revolution” to describe an abrupt change in social order dates from 1450. However, that use does not become common until the end of the 17th century.

Conference, symposium - Epistemology and methodology
Cadres et modes de vie dans l’espace maritime Manche-Mer du Nord du IIIe au Xe siècle
Les cultures des espaces maritimes et littoraux sont le thème de la table ronde de clôture des trois premières années d’activité d'un projet collectif de recherche. Son éclairage thématique transversal permettra de réexaminer la problématique des occupations côtières sur les quatre plans de la fréquentation, de l’exploitation, de la maîtrise et de l’aménagement des espaces littoraux, intégrant la question des échanges et des relations qu’ils conditionnent, sur le plan strictement humain, des idées, de l’économie et des techniques notamment. Nous souhaitons placer les apports des recherches récentes en Nord-Pas-de-Calais dans une perspective qui s’émancipe de sphères géographiques étroitement contingentées ou de périodes trop précisément définies, en considérant la bande côtière Manche-Mer du nord de la Normandie au delta rhéno-mosan, de la fin du IIIe siècle à la fin du Xe siècle. -

La formation et la définition des frontières locales au Moyen Âge
Cette journée s’inscrit dans un « séminaire tournant » intitulé « Frontières et limites », en cinq sessions, sur plusieurs sites, dans lequel l’équipe organisatrice sera systématiquement présente et où interviendront des invités, afin de combiner travail d’équipe (celle-ci étant ancrée au CESCM) et ouverture aux travaux extérieurs. Étant réalisée dans une approche pluridisciplinaire (histoire et géographie), l’accent est mis sur l’analyse spatiale. Des contributions relatives au monde arabo-musulman seront les bienvenues. -

Call for papers - Prehistory and Antiquity
Methodological and interpretative issues
One of the main characteristics of Roman settlement consists in the implementation of a series of interventions aiming at preparing specific areas for cultivation and making land divisions and distributions. The most important and characteristic feature of these operations is the realization of centuriation systems, that have often radically modified the landscape and agrarian morphology of the countryside. The aim of this conference is to define a methodological protocol of common lines of research on this subject, in order to assign specific roles to the different sources and research tools. The conference will also provide opportunities to deepen a number of themes concerning historical aspects of this phenomenon, particularly that of the continuity or discontinuity of the centuriation systems.
