Panel - APAD conference 2020
How do texts, practices and tools related to the “migration and development” debate circulate? This panel offers to analyse the processes of imposition, translation or hybridization, along with “travelling models”, and the appropriation or resistance experiences of the different categories of actors involved in migration/development governance. We examine the transnational circulation of texts and narratives that have become references for development practitioners in the Global South; the performativity of technical and managerial instruments, case models and “good practices”; the changes in the intermediaries and brokers categories.

Le plus grand congrès réunissant les historiennes et historiens de l'Amérique française aura lieu cette année à Ottawa pour sa 72e édition. Plus de 120 communications aborderont avec des angles, des approches et des questions diverses le thème des Frontière/s. Comment s’exprime, en différentes époques, la notion de frontière en Amérique française? Comment évolue-t-elle au fil des siècles? Quelles sont ses représentations? Quels types de pouvoir impose-t-elle? C’est autour de ces questions que nous engageons les participant.e.s à proposer des pistes d’analyse empiriques, théoriques ou épistémologiques qui permettront de mieux problématiser la frontière.

Si l’origine exacte de l’expression « good girls go to heaven, bad girls go everywhere! » est incertaine, tantôt attribuée à l’actrice et scénariste américaine Mae West tantôt à la rédactrice en chef du magazine Cosmopolitan, Helen Gurvey Brown, elle a été reprise comme slogan par les féministes qui dénoncent la double norme sexuelle imposée aux femmes par les religions. Aujourd’hui quels que soient les intégrismes religieux (catholique, protestant, islamique, juif, hindouiste, bouddhiste, orthodoxe, etc.) ils partagent tous la volonté de maîtriser le corps et la sexualité des femmes dont l’existence aurait, selon eux, pour but unique la maternité.

The Writ of Dynasties and Nation-States in the Middle East and South Asia
Max Weber famously argued that states lay claim to the monopoly of the legitimate use of violence over certain circumscribed territories. However, historical and anthropological research has challenged his ideal-typical vision by showing how the idea of the unitary state is a fiction that can only be produced through the action of interrelated but partly autonomous agents. States, and the various institutions that constitute them, face the strategic task of identifying and domesticating the social networks that are necessary for them to secure control over particular territories and their populations. Local strongmen and notables can in turn use their own local influence in order to gain recognition from higher-level, more powerful, state institutions. In this international conference, scholars from a variety of disciplines will explore the ways in which dynastic power and/or the rule of the state is asserted, negotiated and contested across both the Middle East and South Asia.

The Association international d’études du sud-est européen is happy to invite you to the 12th Congress of South-East European Studies, taking place in Bucharest, from the 2nd to the 7th of September 2019. One of the conference panels, organized by Robert Born (Leipzig) and Marian Coman (Bucharest), is dedicated to the cartographic history of south-eastern Europe. Proposals for individual papers are welcome on various aspects of the history of south-eastern Europe cartography, from the Ottoman period to the post-communist era. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: Renaissance and Early Modern maps of the Ottoman Empire, Enlightenment cartographies of Eastern Europe, the birth of national cartography, war and peace cartographies, historical and propaganda maps, national and local surveys, Cold War cartographies.

Envisioning Latin America: Power and Representation in audiovisual (re)productions
This issue seeks to critically address power structures in audiovisual (re)productions in and from Latin America and discuss how these play a role in the societal construction and representation of individual and collective identities, the ‘us’ and the ‘other’. By doing so, it aims at understanding how these representations – and broader discourses associated therewith – can be critically examined through media productions (cinema, television, radio, photography etc.) and their use as historical sources.

Aujourd’hui, le risque de la rupture semble l’emporter sur les perspectives d’une renaissance. Les profonds bouleversements qui traversent le Proche et le Moyen-Orient ont crée une situation extrêmement complexe dans laquelle la déliquescence de certains États a atteint un point critique peut être irréversible. Il faut reposer la question suivante : les États actuels vont-ils pouvoir prendre en compte leur pluralité religieuse, ethnique, sociétale, ou allons-nous vers une recomposition à terme de cette région à partir d'une faillite irréversible des États ?

The Black Metropolis, between past and future
Race, urban planning and African-American culture in Chicago
The colloquium will celebrate the centenary of the “Great Migration” and explore the social and cultural life of Chicago South Side and West Side from the end of the Thirties, which were marked by the cultural zenith of Bronzeville neighborhood and a series of measures for the Black community inspired by the New Deal, to the present, which is characterized by numerous private and public initiatives in favor of an urban renewal. This international and multidisciplinary colloquium seeks to reevaluate the contribution of the South Side and the West Side to the definition and evolution of the African-American identity from the beginning of the XXth Century until the contemporary moment.

Insights on the Americas
For its 11th issue, RITA proposes to interrogate the links between power and media in the Americas. Several areas of debate can be suggested, although they should not be considered as exclusive. Articles making a critical analysis of official media as well as opposition media, in varied historical and geographical contexts, will of course be welcome. Other articles may deal with the treatment of popular movements by the media. Critical reflections on the relationship between media and economic power are also encouraged. The Thema section can also include analysis of the current diversification of information media by focusing, for instance, on the emergence of “alternative” media on the Internet, or on the power of fake news over the construction of collective representations.

First international seminar for post-graduate students in Sport History
A first international seminar for PHD and post-graduate students in sport history (political and cultural perspectives) supervised by Prof. Dave Day (Manchester Metropolitan University) and Prof. J.-F. Loudcher (Bordeaux) is planned at Bordeaux between the 11th September and the 13th September 2017. It is the first of a series of seminars between the two universities (the next will be in Manchester) and will provides an opportunity to establish new relationsships and partnerships with students ands researchers from all over the world. In addition, this one will have a workshop on European project research funding on cultural and political sport coaching in a comparative way for an application in 2018. It is possible to just attend the seminar and the workshop.

Whether or not “the entire world” was looking at Berlin, as Reuter asserted, is one of the central questions to be addressed at our conference. Starting from the “frontline city” of Berlin, we will cast our glance to West Germany and its neighboring countries in order not only to frame the Berlin Airlift as a transnational memorial of the Cold War, but also to address, from outside, the question of whether Berlin was really the international focus of the East-West conflict back then, as the press and academia so often portray it.

Après avoir conquis la péninsule Italique, Rome aspirait à la domination de tout le bassin méditerranéen ; son ambition était d’autant plus grande quand elle avait soumis Carthage qui lui servit de base au Nord de l’Afrique. En effet, Rome détruisit Carthage en 146 avant J.C. ; sa visée fut alors d’étendre son hégémonie à tout le reste du monde antique. Elle était poussée par des convictions religieuses inébranlables, à savoir que le Romain est le plus pieux de tous ; ce qui lui assure la victoire et l’investit de la mission de « civiliser le monde » en lui assurant une bonne organisation, ce qu’a exprimé Virgile plus tard : « n’oublie jamais, vaillant Romain, que tu es né pour gouverner les peuples… oblige-les à respecter la paix ». Mais cette conviction à elle seule n’est rien de plus qu’un instrument de mobilisation que Rome utilise pour accomplir ce qu’elle appelle sa « noble mission » de civiliser les peuples en imposant l’ordre romain.
