De quoi la nature est-elle le nom ?
Représentations de la nature dans l'art, l'art appliqué et sa critique contemporaine
L’objectif de cette journée d’étude est d’interroger les enjeux de la représentation de la « nature » dans les arts et les lettres, et son appropriation, par la création et la critique contemporaine. Quels échos ces réflexions sur le concept de nature ont-ils dans le monde de la création et le monde artistique ? Quelles créations au nom de la nature, ou volontiers déconstructionnistes, émergent aujourd’hui ? Quel est leur sens ? Quels enjeux de pouvoir ces choix de représentation peuvent-ils sous-tendre ? Quelles évolutions herméneutiques se dessinent, enfin, en lettres et arts en réaction à ces débats ?

Contemporary arts and nativeness
Cette journée d’étude part du constat de la place de plus en plus importante des appellations « autochtone » et « indigène » dans les mondes de l’art contemporain international. Elle a pour objectif d’interroger les pratiques, les identités et les catégories. Il s’agira de se demander quelle théorie culturelle de l’autochtonie peut aujourd’hui être proposer, et depuis quelle situation. On entend déplacer la focale des questions institutionnelles vers celles des processus créatifs, des identités assignées vers les pratiques par lesquelles l’individu s’auto-désigne, voire se désidentifie. L’indigénéité pourrait être, à cet égard, un outil permettant de déjouer les pièges de l’identité, dans lesquels la création contemporaine est de plus en plus fréquemment prise.

Language and Performance: Moving across Discourses and Practices in a Globalized World
European Journal of Theatre and Performance
The European Journal of Theatre and Performance is inviting submissions for its next issue. Against the backdrop of a deeply diversified and often divided global stage, this issue wants to reconsider the fairly strenuous debate on the relationship between language and performance, which has surfaced repeatedly yet in various guises in the field of the performing arts. The editors more specifically invite contributions that critically inquire into how language either enables or impedes the creation and development of performance works, the dissemination of scholarly research, or the reconciliation of local traditions with international tendencies in both the arts and academia. The overarching aim is to shed new light on the intricate connections between language and performance by focusing on the various ways in which performance always operates on the microlevel of concrete practices as well as in dialogue with the macrolevel of larger sociopolitical and cultural contexts.

Imaginary places, real territories
Territorial imagery and the creation of a Dutch identity (1579-1702)
This two-day symposium aims to shed light on the ways in which Dutch depictions of national and transnational territories participated in the formulation of a shared identity. Multidisciplinary discussions will allow us to examine the terms of territorial imagery in Dutch visual culture, and their links with the formation of a national myth in the Early Modern Dutch Republic.

Following in the footsteps of Fernand Braudel, an increasing number of recent studies show that the Mediterranean basin might be considered as a “borderland”, “borderscape” or “Frontier” suggesting that this area is not strictly a border between Christian and Muslim civilization, but a basin in which the two traditions and cultures meet and overlap, with an extraordinary variety of reactions to the hegemonic practices (acceptance, conflict, refusal, dissent). The aim of this conference is to bring together scholars who will discuss, from different perspectives and with a multidisciplinary approach, the variety of themes (topics) which revolve around the common issue of reflecting the problem of borderlands as a consequence of the encounter between Christendom and Ottoman Empire in the Early modern Mediterranean. The starting point of examination will be images, i.e. the usage of images (pictures, mental images, literary images and other visual representations …) as historical evidence.

Manufacturing collective identities. Art at work in the contemporary era (19th-21st centuries)
Les derniers siècles (XIX-XXIe) ont été le terrain d'une reconfiguration incessante des identités collectives et de leurs imaginaires. Ces fluctuations sont le résultat des transformations majeures que sont les révolutions politiques, les phénomènes de modernisation industrielle, les nouvelles dynamiques de territorialisation et de mondialisation. Par conséquent, il est important pour l’histoire de l'art d'engager une interprétation de l'œuvre artistique en l'intégrant aux facteurs extérieurs. Dans une volonté de s'éloigner des schémas traditionnels, qui excluent, désengagent, décontextualisent et dépolitisent, le monde artistique interroge le lien entre art et société, entre création et construction des identités collectives. Ce sont d'ailleurs l'émergence, la grande diversité et le caractère mouvant de ces dernières qui sont ici sujet d’intérêt.

KISMIF Conference 2020
We are pleased to announce the fifth KISMIF International Conference ‘Keep It Simple, Make It Fast! DIY Cultures and Global Challenges’ (KISMIF Conference 2020) which will take place in Porto, Portugal, between 8 July and 11 July 2020. The submission of abstracts for this conference is open to academic researchers working in all areas of sociology, anthropology, history, cultural economics, cultural studies, geography, philosophy, urban planning, media, and cognate disciplines, such as design, illustration, popular music, cinema, visual and performing arts. This initiative follows the great success of the past four KISMIF Conferences (held in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2018) and brings together an international community of researchers focusing on underground music scenes and do-it-yourself cultures.

The creation of landscape in the theatre
Dioramas, zoetropes, exotic, climatic, natural and acquatic theatre
Voyages, exotisme, fictions touristiques, dioramas, hydroramas, théâtres nautiques, aquatiques, théâtres climatiques, catastrophes et dérèglements en scène… ces expériences, d’hier et d’aujourd’hui, qui transforment parfois le lieu lui-même en environnement (aquarium, jungle, désert, montagnes…), mettent en scène des décors, des lumières, des atmosphères, des dispositifs qui associent la scène et la nature. Des images déplacées, ni vraiment réalistes ni vraiment symbolistes, apparaissent, plaçant les spectateurs dans une expérience étrange et familière à la fois.

Dans une optique interdisciplinaire, ce colloque international se propose d'étudier la notion de distance à l'époque moderne (XV-XVIIIe siècle), en la considérant comme un angle essentiel pour les approches spatiales et multi-scalaires mobilisées dans de nombreux travaux en histoire. Que ce soit en termes de circulations, d’échanges ou encore de liens sociaux, les distances se pratiquent et s’éprouvent. Intervalles physiques ou symboliques, elles permettent donc d’aborder le rapport qu’entretiennent les hommes à leur espace. La problématique s'articule autour de trois axes : les dimensions matérielles, les perceptions et les écritures, et les temps des distances.

Interdisciplinary Graduate Conference
How is the materiality of the visible world inscribed in its cultural representations? What are the more or less visible actors and mechanisms in the genesis of a cultural artefact? Should the visible / invisible binomial be considered as an anthropological constant or as the effect of a certain epistemological constellation? To what extent does visibility coincide with power and, therefore, how should one represent the in/visible? These are just some of the questions that cultural studies, in their innate interdisciplinarity and methodological heterogeneity can formulate with respect to the issue.

Dance and geography: mobilities, circulations and imaginary worlds
L’Atelier des doctorants en danse propose de rassembler des réflexions menées par de jeunes chercheurs dont l’objet d’étude porte sur les arts chorégraphiques, la danse ou, plus largement, l’objet corps, et dont les approches s’inscrivent dans le champ de la géographie. Les échanges nourris par ces réflexions mettront en avant un questionnement concernant la fabrication d’un imaginaire conféré par des éléments spatiaux sur un territoire donné. Dans cette perspective, comment les études en danse et en géographie peuvent-elles dialoguer ? Si la danse est devenue assez tardivement un objet d’étude pour les géographes, on remarque que le mouvement et l’espace sont quant à eux des enjeux fondamentaux dans bon nombre d’études en danse.

Part of the ERC research project Relocating Modernism: Global Metropolises, Modern Art and Exile (METROMOD), it addresses metropolitan areas that were settled by migrant artists in the first half of the 20th century.

Cultural encounters in the nineteenth century
The exhibition The Dutch in Paris, which was on show in the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam and in the Petit Palais, Paris during the fall of 2017 and spring of 2018 respectively, aimed to visualize the artistic exchange between Dutch and French artists between 1789 and 1914. As part of a larger research project, set up by the RKD – Netherlands Institute for Art History, the exhibition generated so much response that ESNA, in collaboration with the RKD and NWO, decided to organize an international conference on the subject, focusing specifically on international as well as national and local points of encounter and how they facilitated artistic exchange.

Rethinking the Worlds of Music and Dance through contemporary (Im)mobility
This conference proposes to provide transversal and transdisciplinary reflections on the various modalities of mobility and migration that are created through the arts, as well as the remaking of the worlds of music and dance in the transnational field. It will question the modalities of movement or of impediments to circulate that are revealed by music and dance’s analysis; the way in which the worlds of art and contemporary creations are shaped by different forms of (im)mobility; and how, in this wake, individuals act on their social environments and on the power relations in which they evolve.

Museum-homes - famous peoples' homes and heritage
Les maisons-musées (créées par leurs propriétaires de leur vivant, ou plus souvent réaffectées comme mémorial posthume après leur mort) bénéficient aujourd’hui d’un regain d’intérêt manifeste. Ces lieux favorisent le développement touristique, ils font tout autant l’objet de publications que d’accords de réseau, et constituent des « marques culturelles » internationalement reconnues. À partir des notions de patrimoine et de monument historique, ainsi que des travaux fondateurs de P. Nora sur les lieux de mémoire (1984, 1986, 1992), ce numéro thématique prendra en compte l’ensemble du processus de patrimonialisation, abordé comme un processus de création et de réinterprétation du passé à l’aune du présent. Il permettra d’étudier la genèse historique du phénomène ainsi que ses évolutions contemporaines jusqu’à nos jours.

Music and immaterial heritage?
Transposition. Musique et sciences sociales journal issue 8
In 2017, almost a third of the files submitted to UNESCO for inscription on the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) lists include a significant musical component. Applications have poured in since the 2006 entry into force of the International Convention for the Safeguarding of ICH, which established a new heritage paradigm based on practices and communities rather than monuments and artefacts, according to the perspective of “new heritages” and their aim to cultivate more open and participatory practices. Considering the far-reaching implications, this issue of Transposition aims to explore the specific case of music in the domain of “intangible cultural heritage”, both within and beyond the framework used by UNESCO.
