Représentations de la nature dans l'art, l'art appliqué et sa critique contemporaine
L’objectif de cette journée d’étude est d’interroger les enjeux de la représentation de la « nature » dans les arts et les lettres, et son appropriation, par la création et la critique contemporaine. Quels échos ces réflexions sur le concept de nature ont-ils dans le monde de la création et le monde artistique ? Quelles créations au nom de la nature, ou volontiers déconstructionnistes, émergent aujourd’hui ? Quel est leur sens ? Quels enjeux de pouvoir ces choix de représentation peuvent-ils sous-tendre ? Quelles évolutions herméneutiques se dessinent, enfin, en lettres et arts en réaction à ces débats ?

Contemporary arts and nativeness
Cette journée d’étude part du constat de la place de plus en plus importante des appellations « autochtone » et « indigène » dans les mondes de l’art contemporain international. Elle a pour objectif d’interroger les pratiques, les identités et les catégories. Il s’agira de se demander quelle théorie culturelle de l’autochtonie peut aujourd’hui être proposer, et depuis quelle situation. On entend déplacer la focale des questions institutionnelles vers celles des processus créatifs, des identités assignées vers les pratiques par lesquelles l’individu s’auto-désigne, voire se désidentifie. L’indigénéité pourrait être, à cet égard, un outil permettant de déjouer les pièges de l’identité, dans lesquels la création contemporaine est de plus en plus fréquemment prise.

Urgent issue of The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge
This special issue, Tilting, seeks to take up themes that have animated the Blackwood’s program and mandate throughout the last several years: questions of connectivity, the challenges of public and private space, community and/in isolation; imperatives to re-structure modes and methodologies of care, including revaluing care work, confronting collective care responsibilities within colonial and capitalist structures, and engaging with the infrastructures, aesthetics, contestations, and radical possibilities of mutual aid; responses to the precarization of art, labour, and life; interest in what modes of knowledge production, circulation, and re-distribution are vital to us now, and how these networks might take new form. These urgencies continue to drive Blackwood programming (and this forthcoming publication), supporting and activating artists, curators, and writers who incite us to be responsive, critical, and answerable.

Following in the footsteps of Fernand Braudel, an increasing number of recent studies show that the Mediterranean basin might be considered as a “borderland”, “borderscape” or “Frontier” suggesting that this area is not strictly a border between Christian and Muslim civilization, but a basin in which the two traditions and cultures meet and overlap, with an extraordinary variety of reactions to the hegemonic practices (acceptance, conflict, refusal, dissent). The aim of this conference is to bring together scholars who will discuss, from different perspectives and with a multidisciplinary approach, the variety of themes (topics) which revolve around the common issue of reflecting the problem of borderlands as a consequence of the encounter between Christendom and Ottoman Empire in the Early modern Mediterranean. The starting point of examination will be images, i.e. the usage of images (pictures, mental images, literary images and other visual representations …) as historical evidence.

Displaying the social history of migrants: content, scenography, public engagement
Donner à voir l’histoire sociale des migrations: contenus, scénographies, médiations
We seek proposals from post-doctoral scholars, recent PhDs, as well as those in the final stages of their dissertations with a background in related fields, in particular migration studies and social history, especially as they intersect with museum studies and/or public history. Participants will discuss, from a theoretical and a practical point of view, the best ways to display, in an exhibition context, the daily experience of past migrations in all their social dimensions.

LGBTI and Queer Arts, Cultures and Activisms
In France, a few years after the law authorizing same-sex marriage, LGBTQ associations are now facing new struggles, fighting for access to assisted procreation or the creation of a communal archive center. Drawing on these dynamics, this conference aims at interrogating the bonds between LGBTQ forms of arts, cultures and activisms. We look forward to opening a space for academics and grassroots activists, whether they be engaged in institutional collectives or not, to exchange, reflect and dialogue. LGBTQ-related topics appear to be often overlooked in French research networks. We aim to make it more visible and richer, and make it dialogue with local, national and international networks of academics and activists.

Manufacturing collective identities. Art at work in the contemporary era (19th-21st centuries)
Les derniers siècles (XIX-XXIe) ont été le terrain d'une reconfiguration incessante des identités collectives et de leurs imaginaires. Ces fluctuations sont le résultat des transformations majeures que sont les révolutions politiques, les phénomènes de modernisation industrielle, les nouvelles dynamiques de territorialisation et de mondialisation. Par conséquent, il est important pour l’histoire de l'art d'engager une interprétation de l'œuvre artistique en l'intégrant aux facteurs extérieurs. Dans une volonté de s'éloigner des schémas traditionnels, qui excluent, désengagent, décontextualisent et dépolitisent, le monde artistique interroge le lien entre art et société, entre création et construction des identités collectives. Ce sont d'ailleurs l'émergence, la grande diversité et le caractère mouvant de ces dernières qui sont ici sujet d’intérêt.

In/visible: representation, discourse, practices, “dispositifs”
Interdisciplinary Graduate Conference
How is the materiality of the visible world inscribed in its cultural representations? What are the more or less visible actors and mechanisms in the genesis of a cultural artefact? Should the visible / invisible binomial be considered as an anthropological constant or as the effect of a certain epistemological constellation? To what extent does visibility coincide with power and, therefore, how should one represent the in/visible? These are just some of the questions that cultural studies, in their innate interdisciplinarity and methodological heterogeneity can formulate with respect to the issue.

« Making mars » : la fabrique sensible des traces

L’école de printemps Arts in the Alps 2019 aura lieu du 17 au 22 juin et réunira une communauté dynamique de chercheurs et d’artistes, des sciences humaines et sociales (ou de l’art, de la danse, de la géographie, de l’informatique, de la performance et du son), pour explorer et expérimenter comment le sensoriel devient matériel dans un contexte de recherche basée sur la pratique. Les efforts engagés pour fabriquer des traces invitent à un examen approfondi de la pensée matérielle et incarnée que sous-tend la recherche basée sur la pratique. Au cours de cet événement d’une semaine, notre objectif est de mettre l’accent sur la manière dont les traces matérielles sont créées, à travers et pour la recherche artistique, et peuvent à leur tour être partagées entre les communautés.

Focusing on the intersections of exile, artistic practice and urban space, this international conference brings together researchers committed to revising the historiography of ‘modern’ art. Part of the ERC research project Relocating Modernism: Global Metropolises, Modern Art and Exile (METROMOD), it addresses metropolitan areas that were settled by migrant artists in the first half of the 20th century.

Cultural encounters in the nineteenth century
The exhibition The Dutch in Paris, which was on show in the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam and in the Petit Palais, Paris during the fall of 2017 and spring of 2018 respectively, aimed to visualize the artistic exchange between Dutch and French artists between 1789 and 1914. As part of a larger research project, set up by the RKD – Netherlands Institute for Art History, the exhibition generated so much response that ESNA, in collaboration with the RKD and NWO, decided to organize an international conference on the subject, focusing specifically on international as well as national and local points of encounter and how they facilitated artistic exchange.

Envisioning Latin America: Power and Representation in audiovisual (re)productions
This issue seeks to critically address power structures in audiovisual (re)productions in and from Latin America and discuss how these play a role in the societal construction and representation of individual and collective identities, the ‘us’ and the ‘other’. By doing so, it aims at understanding how these representations – and broader discourses associated therewith – can be critically examined through media productions (cinema, television, radio, photography etc.) and their use as historical sources.

Son objectif est de contribuer à l’inclusion de jeunes chercheurs francophones au sein du réseau des popular music studies, ainsi qu’à la diffusion en français de nouveaux savoirs sur les musiques populaires. Le lauréat du Prix gagnera la somme de 300€ et sera publié dans la revue Volume!

Acting in the city - art and politics in the urban space 3: day-to-day
Le colloque « Agir dans la ville. Art et politique dans l'espace urbain 3 : du quotidien » entend dégager les formes de la manifestation quotidienne du pouvoir, entendu ici dans son acception la plus large, à travers les actes de résistance qu’il suscite au et dans le quotidien. Autrement dit, il s'agira d'étudier les reconfigurations que l'exercice quotidien du pouvoir impose aux modes ou aux pratiques de résistance, à même ce quotidien ou dans ses marges. Si l'exercice du pouvoir repose sur le quadrillage millimétrique des espaces de la vie quotidienne, celui-ci implique nécessairement des tactiques de résistance, des ruses, des pratiques « braconnières » (de Certeau) se développant à même les espaces communs ou, suivant le mot de Gilles Deleuze, une géographie des lignes de fuite.

Modernism and Rurality: Mapping the State of Research (EAHN 2018 - Tallin)
5th European Architectural History Network International Meeting, in Tallinn, June 2018
This session aims to address, from a historical perspective, the relation between, on one side, architecture and the related disciplines, and on the other side, agriculture and rurality at large. We welcome proposals specifically mapping case studies concerned with large-scale agricultural development and/or colonization schemes conceived and (but not necessarily) implemented in Europe and beyond during modern times (late 18th-20th century), strongly connected to nation- and State-building processes, and to the modernization of the countryside. We are particularly interested in those examples which aimed to “make the difference” in both scale and numbers, entailing radical reshaping of previously uninhabited or sparsely populated areas into new, planned, “total” rural landscapes.

Les artefacts visuels [cartes postales, images issues des guides touristiques, affiches publicitaires, maquettes d’expositions universelle / coloniale / musée, films documentaires, jusqu’aux nouvelles images et nouvelles techniques de visualisation contemporaine (3D, expériences interactives et immersives etc.)] ont diachroniquement accompagné la patrimonialisation des sites, monument ou objets. Au-delà de l’approche communicationnelle de la patrimonialisation, analysant les mises en communication et en exposition du patrimoine, c’est-à-dire les dispositifs techniques de médiatisation du patrimoine, l’objectif de cette journée d’études est d’engager une réflexion sur le rôle des artefacts visuels dans la fabrique touristique du patrimoine.

Dans le champ des études visuelles, d’importants travaux publiés ou traduits récemment portent sur l’agentivité des images : quel est leur pouvoir, que font-elles, que veulent-elles, peut-on parler d’acte d’image ? Parallèlement, les concepts de performance et de performativité sont de plus en plus employés dans les sciences sociales, et en particulier, interrogés par la géographie. Au croisement de ces agendas scientifiques, le colloque proposé par le département de géographie de l’université de Genève porte sur ce que font les images dans l’espace public. Dans quelles mesures ces images, font-elles advenir, produisent-elles ou transforment-t-elles les lieux, les acteurs et les pratiques qui leurs sont associées ? Comment fabrique-t-on de l’image avec et dans l’espace public ? Quels sont les enjeux symboliques, sociaux et politiques de leur présence ?

Inventing, testing and transforming reality
Un appel à communications est lancé pour un colloque international et interdisciplinaire organisé à l'université de Genève les 7, 8 et 9 septembre 2016 sur les dispositifs de simulation du monde du début du XIXe siècle à aujourd'hui. Nous proposons de designer sous ce terme toute installation simulant la présence du spectateur dans un autre espace et/ou un autre temps, et visant à faire vivre à un large public une expérience historique, géographique et/ou physique, comme le panorama, le plan relief, le diorama, le cinéma, le géorama, le globe, les dispositifs optiques comme le zootrope, les parcs d'attraction ou à thèmes, les musées – notamment musées des sciences, de photographies ou de cartographie.
