Cathedrals and Mosques: Building Urban Memories and Landscapes in Southern Europe (12th - 14th centuries)

This international conference will discuss interdisciplinary questions regarding the importance of cathedrals and mosques in the definition of memory and urban landscape in the medieval Mediterranean from the twelfth to the fourteenth centuries. Our research aims at analysing the role these two buildings played in configuring the urban fabric of the Mediterranean world. One of our primary objectives is to understand how these buildings defined medieval landscape and urban space. How did they modify and condition the social and functional organisation of their urban surroundings? What architectural features contributed to their place in civic memory (decoration, architectural style and building techniques)? We are interested in the place they occupy in their cities’ urban planning and topography.

Medieval rural habitats in Poitou-Charentes (9th-15th century)

New perspectives in the light of recent archaeological discoveries

L'objectif de cette manifestation, est de proposer un moment d'échange aux archéologues médiévistes ayant eu la responsabilité d'opérations en région Poitou-Charentes au cours des années 2009-2013. Le programme de cette journée est organisé autour de la présentation de sites fouillés, en privilégiant deux ou trois thématiques définies à partir de questionnements forts et récurrents, tels que la morphologie de l'habitat (organisation spatiale, voiries,annexes en surface ou souterraines, etc), les modes de construction, la fonctionnalité des espaces internes ou les activités domestiques ou artisanales.

Ligues et espace (Allemagne-France, XIIIe-XVIe siècle)

Cette journée d'études internationale analysera les ligues et coopérations urbaines médiévales (France et Allemagne) sous l'angle de l'espace. Un premier niveau d'approche des ligues et de leur espace consistera à repérer les constructions géopolitiques des acteurs ligués. Ce qui passe par une réflexion méthodologique sur les outils cartographiques et sociologiques adéquats à l'étude historique des ligues. Un second axe d'étude s'attachera à saisir comment les ligues produisaient l'espace, au travers de leur rhétorique, leur fonctionnement et leurs réseaux de communication.
