Italian Association for Middle Eastern Studies (SeSaMO) Annual Conference - Panel 12
This panel focuses on the renewed forms to build the city in the MENA region (‘environmental planning’, ‘resilient urbanism’, ‘responsive urbanism’, participatory and ‘collaborative’ initiatives, ‘sustainable’ urbanism…). The panel will tackle two types of spaces: informal settlements, where experimental forms and new methods are at work, and major eco-projects which have adopted in recent years ecological processes, along with global strategies. The major research hypothesis is that the MENA region shows at least since the 2000s new forms of urbanism that, to varying degrees, bring weak but maybe harbinger/forerunner signals of change and innovation, driven by the concepts of environment and sustainability. This is valid for both urban governance and the theoretical underpinnings of it, whereby professional training and the learning ways of doing, thinking and working on the city, shows some progressive changes. The panel will seek to understand why, however, the MENA seems to experience difficulties in ‘refreshing its software’ on regional, national and local theory and practice of urban planning.

Revolts and Transitions in the Arab World: Towards a New Urban Agenda?
This international colloquium aims to discuss the urban dimension of the great changes in the Arab world, from the origins of the 2011 revolutionary episodes to the present experiences of democratisation, along with phases of political transition and socio-economic crisis in which states are still entangled. Our objective is to (re)consider processes of urbanisation and urban practices, by the yardstick of the political, economic and social issues relevant in the region since the beginning of the decade. Organized by the Pole "City and Sustainable Development" of the CEDEJ (http://www.cedej-eg.org/), this colloquium is also part of two ongoing research programs : - Sustainable City in the South Mediterranean (MeRsi project), co-funded by the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (Academic Agency of French-speaking countries)- Middle East Office and the CEDEJ; - SYSREMO: Global Geographies : Towards a regional system in the Middle East, funded by the Agence Nationale de la Recherche (National Agency for Research), France (ESO-Rennes). -

Metropolitan energy policies: the case of the Turkish cities
Call for paper for a Seminar at the French Institute of Anatolian Studies (IFEA), co-organized by Eric Verdeil (Jean Moulin University in Lyon - UMR Environment City Corporation) and Jean-François Pérouse (Galatasaray University and IFEA). The report Energy and Urban Innovation (2010) by the World Energy Council underlines the fundamental role of cities in the energy transition and the interlocking of several series of actions, related to technology, economy and policy. It appears that the political and social practices are a major issue and justify an increased contribution of social sciences to the analysis of the implementation of these new policies. The seminar intends to address these issues in the case of large Turkish cities. -
