Les Cahiers d’études des cultures ibériques et latino-américaines (CECIL)
The problem of representation is central to the disciplinary fields of all the human and social sciences, most often implicitly. This omnipresence sometimes makes us forget that it is a notion whose definition, status and function are subject to the fluctuations of history. What interests us is the discrepancy between what this notion has been able to encompass over time and what it encompasses nowadays, as well as the explanation that can be given to these discrepancies or possible ruptures. The reflection focuses in particular on the link between the notion of representation and the notions of 'heritage' - tangible or intangible objects, but also products of a social construction - and of 'memory', since it is constructed through concrete representations, whether social or discursive practices.

Conception, birth and childhood
“New Comparative Mythology” Journal, 5
New Comparative Mythology, a peer-reviewed journal of comparative mythology with an international editorial board, issues, for its fifth volume, a call for papers on the topic “conception, birth and childhood”. In many mythologies, these three initial phases of the existence of divine, heroic, monstrous and other figures have given rise to many traditions. In addition, various beliefs and practices, which are lent legendary or mythical precedents, also rhythm this period which goes from the fertilization to the edge of the initiatory phase of the individuals. It is on the comparative study of this vast field of research that the articles submitted to our review will have to relate.

Si la modernité est incarnée en Occident par la rationalisation de l’État et de la société qui met à bas les mythes de la tradition et fait s’effondrer l’autorité de la religion et du pouvoir absolu, elle s’exprime dans l’Empire du Milieu d’une autre façon et sous une autre forme. Depuis les guerres de l’Opium au milieu du XIXe siècle, la Chine se trouve sous l’influence massive du monde occidental, et prend l’Occident comme modèle à suivre pour se moderniser. Mais le processus de modernisation de la Chine est cependant marqué par le rejet d’une occidentalisation totale. La modernité occidentale semble étrangère aux Chinois, alors que ces derniers l’ont en réalité adaptée aux circonstances propres à leur pays. Cette journée d’étude vise à étudier les divers aspects de la question de la modernité dans la Chine d’hier et d’aujourd’hui, afin de s’interroger sur les différentes formes de la modernisation « à la chinoise », au niveau politique, dans la société, dans la pensée, dans la littérature, dans les arts et dans la religion.

Thinking freely in religion in English-speaking countries
This conference will explore the different ways by which thinking freely in religion has been understood and practiced in English-speaking countries since the Middle Ages. The starting point is the peculiar way by which freethought has been historically associated with hostility to religion. What is, therefore, thinking freely in religion? The conference calls for papers about the free spaces created by religious traditions and institutions in the English-speaking world and about how these spaces relate to freethought and to any way of thinking freely that is hostile to religion. The conference aims for a long-term perspective on the interactions between freethought and thinking freely, and calls for papers on any historical period from the Middle Ages to the present.

Hamsa. Journal of Judaic and Islamic Studies, nº 2
“Purity” and “Impurity” establish themselves as structural categories in both Islam and Judaism, embracing dimensions as diverse as the body, food, clothing and even space itself. The 2nd issue of the journal Hamsa will be devoted to this wide-ranging theme, seeking to obtain diachronic historical perspectives. To this effect, we aim to promote the analysis of interfaith relationships, in those instances where purity and impurity are projected in contacts with the Other. Those dimensions concern not only the minorities, but also affect Christianitas itself, through interiorization of these concepts and their application to minority communities (as is the case, for example, with limpeza de sangue - “cleanliness of blood”).

Port Royal in the 19th century
La mémoire de Port-Royal a été, au moins jusqu’à la Révolution française, animée d’une ferveur militante. Véritable emblème du jansénisme au XVIIIe siècle, la célébration du monastère martyr a puissamment contribué à une cristallisation identitaire et au maintien d’une vivace tradition anti-janséniste, alors même que les forces du parti déclinaient. Au-delà de la césure révolutionnaire, l’actualité de Port-Royal semble résulter d’autres processus d’identification et de rejet. Tout au long du XIXe siècle, malgré l’éloignement temporel et les effets de la sécularisation, la référence à Port-Royal ne disparaît pas, bien au contraire, mais tout indique qu’elle change alors de nature autant que d’horizon. C’est à une meilleure connaissance des avatars post-révolutionnaires de Port-royal que ce colloque aimerait justement contribuer.

Metabolisations of "social cohesion"
International conference in the framework of the "Citizen dynamics in Europe" project
Dans le cadre du projet Dynamiques citoyennes en Europe (http://www.dcie.net) nous invitons au colloque Métabolisations de la « cohésion sociale » qui aura lieu du 15 au 16 mars 2013. Doctorants, post-doctorants… seront invités à interroger à nouveaux frais la conflictualité de cette formule peu définie « cohésion sociale » (J. Donzelot). D’où provient, qu’apporte encore ce « quasi concept » (Caroline Guibet Lafaye) ? Quelles pratiques anciennes et nouvelles produisent une telle cohésion ? Les participants questionneront les multiples « Métabolisations de la cohésion sociale ». Le colloque sera clos par un débat commun confrontant les différentes positions développées durant ces deux journées. Les contributions seront publiées au sein de la revue en ligne « Droit de Cité ». -

La reconfiguration des savoirs à l'aube du XXe siècle
L’œuvre de Hermann Usener, professeur de philologie à Bonn qui fut à l’origine d’une école aussi importante que diverse, a singulièrement peu retenu l’attention des chercheurs. Elle a pourtant profondément marqué la sociologie durkheimienne, la conception warburgienne de l’histoire de l’art, l’histoire des religions, l’ethno-anthropologie naissante ou encore l’histoire des mythes et des légendes populaires. Elle illustre donc bien la manière dont la philologie a alimenté de nombreux champs du savoir.On explorera les relations scientifiques de Usener avec un certain nombre de contemporains, comme Wilhelm Mannhardt, Walter Otto, Wilhelm Dilthey, Friedrich Nietzsche, Ulrich von Wilamowitz, afin de comprendre comment le paradigme scientifique lié à son oeuvre a pu marquer des domaines en principe aussi différents que la sociologie et l’histoire de l’art, et rayonner en Allemagne comme en France.
