The internationalisation of museums: between brand strategies and diplomatic influence

Le développement des marques muséales connaît une extension continue au plan interne comme au plan international : la création du musée du Louvre à Abu Dhabi (LAD) en constitue l’illustration française la plus accomplie comme, selon des modalités différentes, l’inauguration d’un Centre Pompidou à Malaga et la récente inauguration du Centre Pompidou × West Bund Museum Project à Shanghai. Il serait possible d’envisager l’émergence d’un nouveau type de musées au regard des contraintes territoriales (Dufrêne 2000, 2007) [...] L’enjeu de ce supplément est de s’interroger sur l’institution muséale et son devenir dans cette perspective de mondialisation des marques.

This special issue of Cahiers d'Outre-Mer proposes to question the articulation between the development of the digital environment and local reconfigurations of cultural industries in the Global South. It aims at better understanding how new technologies have transformed the conditions and modes of creation, production, distribution / dissemination of cultural content (film, music, visual arts, performing arts, literature, etc.) over the past decades in South countries. It also seeks to comprehend the effects on different forms of local innovation, as well as social and territorial asymmetries. Original contributions based on recent fieldworks with a particular attention to spatial and socio-anthropological dimensions are welcome.

The organizers invite the submission of any proposal for setting out the contribution of media (traditional and new media) to the political construction of community, ethnic and national identities in one of these four areas. Papers, which can be comparative or not, focusing on a particular geographical area or not can give a theoretical or empirical answer to the question: “media: actors or instruments in the construction of community, ethnic and national identities?”
