  Democracy and Technology. Europe in Tension from the 19th to the 21st century

  Public debate, social media demonstrations, participative assessment, technocracy and transparency: these are just some of the issues on the growing list of multiple and evolving interactions between technology and democracy in Europe since the middle of the 19^th Century. The sixth Tensions of Europe conference aims historicizing and exploring these complicated links in long-term perspective. It will address key contemporary issues such as the democratization of technology and the vulnerabilities of technological democracies. The conference will close the ANR funded project « Large technical networks and democracy: innovations, practices and interested parties in long-term perspective, from 1880 to the present day ». The conference will also feature the official presentation of the Making Europe book series, more than 40 panels, and of course the traditional untraditional Tensions events – this time in Parisian style!

  Democracy and Technology, Europe in Tension from the 19th to the 21st Century

  Sixth Plenary Conference of Tensions of Europe

  This conference will be devoted to the complex relationship between democracy and technology from a European and transnational perspective. The core of this reflection will be the complementarities and cross-fertilization that arise in the interaction of technology and democracy, but also the frictions, tensions, and paradoxes that emerge in the discourses, representations and interplay of actors. This historical conference is open to a wide range of interdisciplinary inquiry. It invites proposals for papers addressing an issue that up to now has mainly been investigated on a national basis. Focusing on circulations and appropriations of technology in a European and transnational perspective, the conference should open new ways to think and talk about the history of Europe.

  Ce colloque est consacré à la parole d’autorité, dans son contexte de production et d’élaboration, dans sa diffusion et dans sa réception. La façon dont les pouvoirs (politique, administratif, économique…) s’adressent à leurs interlocuteurs, en leur qualité respective de citoyens, de sujets, de fidèles ou d’administrés, varie selon les époques et les contextes : une réflexion historique doit permettre de distinguer des lignes générales d’évolution ou de proposer des rapprochements suggestifs. L’objectif de ce colloque est de proposer une approche transpériodique (de l’Antiquité à nos jours) et pluridisciplinaire de la question (impliquant non seulement l’histoire mais aussi le droit, les sciences politiques, la linguistique) permettant de défricher le terrain et de préparer éventuellement d’autres études ou rencontres plus ciblées, voire un programme de recherche de plus long terme.
