Les Presses de l’Ifpo launch a call for papers related to this theme.

  Sites of hygiene, sites of pleasure in the Middle Ages in Islamic lands

  La thématique choisie, « lieux d’hygiène et lieux d’aisance au Moyen âge en terre d’Islam », permet d’aborder un sujet souvent soigneusement évité dans l’historiographie récente. Il offre pourtant, en croisant les disciplines, la possibilité de percevoir des aspects très variés de la vie privée, difficilement accessibles par d’autres approches (hygiène, pratiques alimentaires, etc.), mais aussi des questions plus générales comme la gestion des espaces urbains, les normes et les interdits religieux, les différenciations sociales. Cette journée d’étude s’inscrit dans le prolongement de celles organisées en 2012 et 2013 respectivement sur « la céramique comme objet historique » et « les jeux et les jouets en terre d’Islam au Moyen Âge » et visant déjà à présenter dans une perspective archéologique, à un public d’étudiants et de chercheurs, des champs de recherche trop souvent considérés comme marginaux ou d’intérêt mineur.

  Light in the Religions of the Book: A Multidisciplinary Approach

  If light is a valuable tool for the development of buildings, it also meets the requirements of practical and functional needs.  Beyond its purely aesthetic role, it is indeed a way to delineate the space and to organize its occupation by defining spatialities and temporalities adapted to the functions of the building. In order to assess the significance of spatial and temporal dimensions of light, a cross-reading of architectural, archaeological, textual and iconographic sources might be particularly fruitful. The theme of light which, somewhat complex, constitutes a privileged entry point not only to the study of man's relationship to space and the sacred, but also to the development – within or between monotheisms – of influences, exchanges, ruptures, continuities and legacies. The goal of the conference is to explore the theme of light in the East and in the West, during the Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, in a transdisciplinary perspective and within five thematic panels.

  La vie quotidienne des moines en Orient et Occident (IVe-Xe siècle)

  L’Institut français d’archéologie orientale du Caire (IFAO), l’École française d’Athènes (EFA) et le Centre d’histoire et civilisation de Byzance (UMR 8167 – Orient et Méditerranée) ont lancé en avril 2008 un programme de recherche pour les années 2008-2011 ayant pour objet l’étude comparée de la vie quotidienne des moines en Orient et en Occident, de la naissance du mouvement monastique en Égypte à l’époque des réformes à Byzance et en Europe occidentale (IVe-Xe siècle).Le premier colloque de ce programme ayant pour objet notre connaissance des sources est accueilli par l’EfA du 14 au 16 mai 2009.
