Reconfiguring / resignifying the city: urban ecotones in the South
Un « écotone » désigne initialement une zone de transition entre deux écosystèmes, par exemple entre terre et mer. Le programme « Écotones » (2015-2020) est un cycle de colloques visant à reprendre ce terme traditionnellement utilisé en géographie et en écologie et à élargir le concept en l’appliquant à d'autres disciplines des sciences sociales et des sciences humaines. Un « écotone » peut donc aussi être compris comme un espace culturel de rencontres, de conflits et de renouveau entre plusieurs communautés. Ce colloque interdisciplinaire portera plus spécifiquement sur les villes coloniales et postcoloniales du Sud en tant que dialectique « écotonale » entre lieux et non-lieux (Augé).

The Enlightened Nightscape (1700-1830)
The objective of The Enlightened Nightscape 1700-1830 is to present a cross-disciplinary discussion on the thinking about the concept of night through examples from the global and long eighteenth century. This edited collection seeks to bring together case studies that address how the night became visible in the eighteenth century through different mediums and in different geographical contexts. The proposed study of the representation, treatment, and meaning of the night in the long and global eighteenth century also contributes to an on-going exercise that questions the accepted definitions of the Enlightenment. By bringing Eighteenth-Century Studies into dialogue with Night Studies, The Enlightened Nightscape 1700-1830 enriches the critical conversation on both lines of research

7th biennial conference of the European Network for Avant-Garde and Modernism Studies (EAM 2020)
Notions of crisis have long charged the study of the European avant-garde and modernism. Throughout their history, avant-gardists and modernists have faced crises, be they economic or political, scientific or technological, aesthetic or philosophical, collective or individual, local or global, short or perennial. Modernists and avant-gardists have in turn continually stood accused of instigating crises, whether artistic or cultural, sensorial or conceptual, incidental or intentional, far-reaching or negligible, representational or other. The very concepts of ‘avant-garde’ and ‘modernism’ are time and again subject—or subjected—to conceptual crises, leaving modernism and avant-garde studies as a field on the perpetual brink of a self-effacing theoretical crisis. The 7th biennial conference of the EAM intends to tackle the ways in which the avant-garde and modernism in Europe relate to crisi/es.

While recent work has renewed our knowledge of medieval execution sites and of the internal layout of detention facilities, much remains to be done to understand the distribution of prison spaces and territories, in particular to shed light on the socio-spatial dynamics and logic of their establishment. These prison spaces evolved between the beginning and the extreme end of the Middle Ages, with prisons only multiplying from the 13th century onwards. These evolutions must be understood in close coordination with the evolutions of medieval justice and its spatial practices. Studies can be carried out at the scale of a building, a neighborhood, a city, a city, one or more regions.

Les œuvres des deux Marguerite se caractérisent par un rapport aux villes et à l’urbanité qui n’a jamais fait l’objet de recherches spécifiques, bien que la vie de cour à la Renaissance engage, dans son itinérance même, une appréhension de la cité – et des multiples cités – tout à fait particulière. Quels furent les relais citadins des deux écrivaines ? Comment ont-elles transformé les villes où elles ont vécu et où elles ont exercé un pouvoir ? Dans quelles villes leurs œuvres ont-elles été écrites, publiées et reçues ? De quels échos urbains leurs livres bruissent-ils ? Comment les autrices de la Renaissance lurent-elles – en tant que femmes et en tant qu’écrivaines – la ville, et comment choisirent-elles de la dire ? Quelles sont les images de la Cité fournies par leurs deux œuvres, à la fois exemplaires et singulières en l’une et l’autre moitié du XVIe siècle ?

Le colloque sera international et interdisciplinaire. Le sujet est à interpréter de manière large, afin d’inclure des écrivains et artistes contemporains de Zola, des analyses génétiques, politico-historiques et sociologiques aussi bien que des études de l’œuvre de Zola. Les invités d’honneur seront Professeur Henri Mitterand, Madame Martine Le Blond Zola et Madame Monique Sicard. Parmi les activités proposées il y aura une exposition, une visite du Musée de la mine de Lewarde et une sortie sur les pas de Zola à Anzin.

Migration and translation are distant but closely related phenomena that understand migration discursively as mobility of texts, international transfer of knowledge and transformation in the field of cultural literacy. Migration may be defined as translation, in line with Salman Rushdie’s proposal that migrants are “translated beings” (Rushdie, 1983). As a matter of fact, it would be easy to prove that they are constantly engaged in “translating and explaining themselves.”

Cartographie du lien social dans le roman noir hispanique contemporain
Dans le prolongement de la collaboration fructueuse amorcée en 2016 avec le festival « Un aller-retour dans le Noir » et l’Instituto Cervantes de Bordeaux, le LLCAA organise les 29 et 30 septembre 2017 un colloque intitulé « Espaces urbains et grands espaces : cartographie du lien social dans le roman noir hispanique contemporain ». Ce colloque se propose d’aborder le roman noir hispanique à travers la catégorie de l’espace, particulièrement déterminante dans ce genre romanesque, et de voir dans quelle mesure l’espace y constitue une catégorie privilégiée pour mettre en scène les problématiques sociales propres à notre époque.

L’architecture et l’espace domestiques sont au cœur du projet « Concevoir, habiter, représenter la maison au Moyen Âge et à la Renaissance entre Loire et Rhin », deuxième volet du colloque « La forme de la maison » prévu les 26 et 27 mai 2016 à Amiens. Ils sont compris dans un sens large incluant différents points de vue sur l’habitat de ses formes les plus sommaires aux plus élaborées, rurales ou urbaines. La « maison », entendue comme une unité à fonction principalement domestique, est privilégiée, ce qui exclut les espaces résidentiels des châteaux et des palais si ce n’est à titre de comparaison.

The War of Spain, between emptiness and excess
Repercussions, representations and reconstructions of conflicts marked by excess (1936-2014)
Par son déchaînement de bruit et de fureur, la guerre d’Espagne a affecté les acteurs du conflit aussi bien que ses victimes et ses témoins, entraînant l’intervention de puissances étrangères, l’engagement d’intellectuels du monde entier et l’exode massif de citoyens espagnols. Son retentissement a été tel qu’elle a inspiré une définition officielle de la notion de guerre civile lors des conventions de Genève de 1949 afin de combler un vide juridique et de définir un cadre légal qui protège les civils des excès de ce type d’affrontement. Ces dernières années, la guerre civile espagnole a été étudiée sous différents angles, mais jamais ses représentations n’ont été analysées dans une perspective pluridisciplinaire qui s’attache au traitement de l’espace et des acteurs en mettant en regard tout ce qui a, intentionnellement ou non, disparu, laissé une trace ou été surexposé. Penser la guerre d’Espagne revient à poser la question de l’excès, que celui-ci soit une vacuité exacerbée traduisant l’absence – figurale, mémorielle, architecturale ou verbale – ou un trop-plein marqué par une prise de position ou une sur-médiatisation de faits, d’acteurs et d’espaces.

This two-day conference brings together young researchers to explore the city and its ideologies from a fully interdisciplinary perspective. Persistent Spaces combines approaches from various fields in order to create a dialogue between disciplines and methodologies. This conference also seeks to establish a dialogue between the 18th and the 19th centuries, in turns highlighting the individual specificities of these two periods, and accounting for the echoes, continuities and breaks between them.

Persistent Spaces: politics, aesthetics and topography in the XVIIIth and XIXth-century City
Our two-day postgraduate conference will explore the evolving configurations of the urban space from the Enlightenment to the late 19th-century. We will consider the accumulating and interpenetrating layers that make up the 18th- and 19th-century city. London and Paris will be our main focus, but this palimpsestic model may be extended elsewhere, and we will welcome abstracts centring on other cities. Interdisciplinarity will be key to our conference. We hope to attract researchers from various fields, including literature and the arts, sociology, philosophy, law, science and engineering, etc. Through this ‘decompartmentalized’ approach, we will attempt to shed light on the myriad facets of the 18th- and 19th-century city.

The Wire: a fiction in the ghetto
Race, classe et genre dans les séries télévisées
Ce séminaire propose de s’intéresser aux quartiers populaires, banlieues et « ghettos », à partir et à travers l’étude d’une série télévisée américaine qui a énormément fait parler d'elle ces dernières années, The Wire. Cette série permet de visualiser, de donner forme à des phénomènes majeurs traités par les sciences sociales. En effet, créée au début des années 2000 par un ancien journaliste du The Baltimore Sun, David Simon, cette série décrit finement la réalité sociale, économique, et politique des habitants des « cités » et quartiers populaires de Baltimore. Nous sommes ainsi convaincus que The Wire offre une perspective suffisamment riche, distanciée et critique de la vie urbaine aux États-Unis pour constituer un outil efficace de discussion et de débats autour des problématiques qui parcourent les quartiers populaires. -

La revue numérique « Urbain, trop urbain — revue de ville » lance un appel à contribution d'articles et autres objets numériques dans les champs de l'urbanisme, de l'histoire urbaine, de la littérature... Cette première revue a pour objet créer une approche pluridisciplinaire : scientifique, artistique et littéraire, sur la Shanghai contemporaine. Numéro à paraître fin août 2011.
