Les chrétiens européens face à leurs passés embarrassants (du Moyen Âge à nos jours)
Les mémoires collectives semblent se focaliser avant tout sur des événements perçus de manière positive par les groupes porteurs de mémoire, en particulier dans le cadre des communautés chrétiennes. Témoignant de l’accomplissement d’un plan providentiel ou de la fidélité de croyants envers Dieu en dépit des difficultés, les faits mémorisés sont généralement honorables. Pour autant, certains actes commis par des chrétiens peuvent embarrasser leurs coreligionnaires des années ou des siècles plus tard. Cette journée d’étude, centrée sur le christianisme en Europe (et ses prolongements coloniaux), vise à explorer ces mémoires honteuses dans la longue durée, du Moyen Âge à nos jours.

Dans le cadre de l’exposition Mémoires républicaines en Vaucluse qui se déroulera au Musée d’histoire Jean Garcin à Fontaine-de-Vaucluse (84800), la Conservation départementale projette de publier un catalogue d’exposition dans lequel figureront les textes et documents de l’exposition majeurs ainsi que des articles scientifiques. Dans ce contexte, un appel à contribution est lancé afin d’embrasser au mieux la période révolutionnaire en Vaucluse et d’offrir un contenu scientifique supplémentaire à l’exposition.

Guest researchers ERC "Mapping Ancient Polytheisms"
The ERC Advanced Grant MAP 741182 project has budgetary support available in order to invite researchers. These stays can be from 2 to 4 months per researcher, with the exclusion of the months of July and August (due to the fact that the university is closed for a large part of the summer). Guest researchers will work within the team, exchanging therein and participating in the improvement of the databases. Guest researchers will equally be requested to take part in MAP scientific activities (seminars, workshops, conferences…). The position of guest researcher and this call for applications is open to everybody, of French or foreign nationality, whose competences and project are deemed to be of interest to the MAP project.

XVIII International ARYS Conference
This conference aims to deconstruct the ideas of rural religion as mechanically reproducing urban rituals and religious hierarchies and of the rural world as a space of cultural and religious resilience against urbanity. Rural areas represented an arena for very situational processes of negotiation between, on the one hand, administrative patterns and related social configurations, and, on the other hand, processes of social conformance to the very characteristics of a local specific rural environment, of adaptation to its peculiar habitus and religious customs, possibly involving gods whose competences directly mirrored a geophysical environment made of mountains, rivers, woods, etc.

The Department of Historical Science at the University of Málaga and the Institute of Historiography “Julio Caro Baroja” at the University of Carlos III of Madrid are organizing an international conference titled “Calling upon gods, offering bodies. Strategies of human-divine communication in the Roman Empire from individual experience to social reproduction”. Researchers of Ancient History, History of Religion, Archaeology, Anthropology, Classics, and other related fields are invited to present their research on this topic. The conference aims at analysing how self-experience of religious communication becomes a reflexive phenomenon reproduced in time and space to constitute a collectively shared narrative.

Pontifical acts - a treasure to be exploited
Parmi les projets de recherche de l’Institut historique allemand (IHA) de Paris se trouve un seul projet à long terme : la Gallia Pontificia. Elle est exploitée par l’IHA en commun avec l’École nationale des chartes et forme la branche française du Göttinger Papsturkunden-Werk, dont l’objectif est l’édition de tous les actes pontificaux établis avant l’avènement d’Innocent III en 1198. Ce projet fut fondé à la fin du XIXe siècle par Paul Fridolin Kehr, sous l’égide de l’Académie des sciences de Göttingen. Le colloque, qui sera organisé dans le cadre du centenaire de l’Union académique internationale, ne visera pas seulement à présenter l’histoire et les résultats du Göttinger Papsturkunden-Werk. Étant donné que le recensement des actes pontificaux est organisé à l’échelle régionale, selon les pays et leurs provinces ecclésiastiques, il conviendra également de prendre en considération les différentes régions (Italie, Allemagne, Espagne, etc.) et leurs spécificités.

Organised by the ERC Advanced Grant “Mapping Ancient Polytheisms. Cult Epithets as an Interface between Religious Systems and Human Agency” (MAP - 741182), the conference Naming and Mapping the gods in the Ancient Mediterranean. Spaces, Mobilities, Imaginaries hopes to bring together the competences and specialties of multiple disciplines – archaeology, history, geography, anthropology, history of religions, philology, reception, social network analysis – in order to consider new documentation corpora concerning the intersection between the divine and space. Among other things, the conference aims to propose an innovative angle of approach: the intersection between the spaces and designations of the gods.

Le Centre d'études supérieures de civilisation médiévale (CESCM) organise depuis 1954 une session annuelle internationale de formation qui regroupe une quarantaine d’étudiants, doctorants et jeunes chercheurs, français et étrangers. Les conférences, les séances de travail autour des ressources documentaires, les excursions et visites au programme des stagiaires sont proposées par des spécialistes du Moyen Âge venus du monde entier. Cette manifestation interdisciplinaire francophone, unique en son genre, a contribué à construire et à renforcer, depuis une cinquantaine d’année, un solide réseau national et international dans le domaine de l’étude du Moyen Âge.

ERC project “Mapping Ancient Polytheisms” – PhD position
The ERC Advanced Grant “Mapping Ancient Polytheisms. Cult Epithets as an Interface between Religious Systems and Human Agency” (MAP - 741182) offers a funded PhD position in the field of History of Ancient Religions, to be filled by 1 October 2019 for a period of 36 months in Toulouse (France). The project will deal with a significant corpus of inscriptions coming from the Greek colonies founded in the East, between Syria and the Indus, and providing evidence on the presence of Greek and non Greek gods.

Oriental monarchisms from the Nile to the Mediterranean
Organising monastic life in East Africa from late Antiquity to the Middle Ages (Egypt, Nubia, Ethiopia, 4th-16th century)
Ce séminaire organisé par l’École française de Rome et le Pontificio Istituto Orientale depuis 2018 est dédié à l’étude du monachisme en Afrique orientale de l’Antiquité tardive à la fin du Moyen Âge. Cette deuxième session est consacrée à la question de l’organisation de la vie monastique en Égypte, Nubie et Éthiopie et privilégie les études de cas. Les rencontres mensuelles entendent mieux identifier et saisir les normes et les modalités pratiques qui régissent l’administration, la gestion, le contrôle et l’aménagement des institutions monastiques. Une attention particulière sera accordée à la vie quotidienne des moines et des moniales en Afrique orientale dont certains aspects demeurent largement méconnus.

Of the Assemby of Cardinals and Archbishops to the Conference of Bishops in France
A century of history, 1919-2019
L’histoire des instances de coordination de l’épiscopat français après la disparition du régime concordataire (1905-1906) est encore mal connue. La création de l’Assemblée des cardinaux et des archevêques (ACA), en 1919, inaugure de prudents efforts de coordination hiérarchique qui s’intensifient dans la décennie 1950. Le concile Vatican II accélère le processus et provoque la mise en place, en 1964, de la Conférence épiscopale française dont le poids ne cesse de s’accroître dans les années suivantes. Le centenaire de la création de l’ACA est l’occasion de revenir sur cette dimension essentielle du catholicisme français contemporain à partir de l’étude de fonds d’archives peu ou pas exploités. Le colloque, organisé par le Centre national des archives de l’Église de France (CNAEF) les 21 et 22 mars 2019 à la Maison des évêques à Paris, privilégiera l’approche historique sans ignorer les perspectives théologiques, politiques et sociologiques.

Vivre en communauté en Méditerranée médiévale et moderne
Pour les deux années à venir (2018-2019 et 2019-2020) ce séminaire portera sur le mode de vie communautaire ou cénobitique autour de la Méditerranée aux époques médiévale et moderne, quelle que soit la religion pratiquée par ces communautés. Les intervenants (membres du laboratoire, doctorants, chercheurs et enseignants-chercheurs extérieurs) traitent de différents aspects de ce « vivre en communauté », qu’il s’agisse d’aspects matériels, artistiques, intellectuels ou spirituels.

Ritual temporalities in Mesoamerica - interdisciplinary approaches
Approches interdisciplinaires
Le rituel est entendu au sens d’une série d’actions spécifiques et formalisées qui, en introduisant un scénario différent des activités quotidiennes, produisent des modifications, éventuellement transitoires, au sein d’un contexte initial. Ainsi en est-il, notamment, des rituels liés à la fabrication des artéfacts, aux cycles de la vie, à la résolution de conflits, à l’intronisation de gouvernants ou de responsables, ou encore aux pratiques d’installation et d’abandon, de réutilisation ou de reconversion d’espaces socialisés. Trois types principaux d’action — créer, détruire, transformer — ont été spécialement explorés, qui permettent de saisir les processus de transition dans leurs dimensions temporelles. Dans une perspective interdisciplinaire, ils présentent l’avantage d’inviter à aborder conjointement la multiplicité des modalités d’action mises en œuvre dans les rites et la performativité des gestes et des discours.
