  Arts and Models of Democracy in post-authoritarian Iberian Peninsula

  This two-day conference aims to innovatively question how artistic practices and institutions formed ways of imagining democracy and by what means arts and culture participate in the wider social struggle to define freedom and equality for the post-Estado Novo and post-Francoist period: how did artistic practices instantiate ideas of democracy in this context? Inversely, how did such democratic values inform artistic practice? How did Portuguese and Spanish artists and intellectuals negotiate between creative autonomy and social responsibility? And more broadly, what is the role of culture in a democracy? The core purpose of the conference is to bring scholars together from different subject areas and exploring any artistic practice (literature, visual and plastic arts, cinema and music).

  Narrating identities within 21st century societies

  Plurilingualism and cultural identities within Catalan society today

  Nous voulons explorer l’interface plurilinguisme – identité(s) culturelle(s), collective et individuelle(s), au sein de la société catalane au tournant du XXIème siècle. Cette étude sera proposée à partir de  la production écrite, en catalan et/ou en espagnol, de personnes qui, ayant une histoire individuelle ou familiale de migration, habitent actuellement en territoire catalan et ont adopté ces deux langues comme langue(s) de création. Pour observer ces identités nous nous concentrerons sur la production littéraire de fiction et les essais de ces auteurs. Nous nous attacherons plus particulièrement à l’étude des discours sur les identités (production et réception). Nous nous interrogerons sur l’articulation entre les identités individuelles et les identités collectives. Par leurs visions du monde, sont-ils devenus des agents actifs de changement au sein de la société catalane ? Quelle place ont-ils accordée dans leurs ouvrages aux différentes langues parlées en Catalogne ?
