Going beyond the limits: experiment with timbre in vocal and instrumental practice in modal music
This title, inspired by a Christopher Page article, points out a key question about the reenactment of medieval music: how to put in sound the vast repertoire that we have inherited. This question links the instruments and their music, as they immediately imply issues related to performance and organological knowledge. From the vocal point of view, it is even more of a burning issue as it requires for imagination and representation. Can experiment, practice and trial go beyond the limits imposed on us by the few material traces available ?

For this special issue of Vox medii aevi, dedicated to the modern interpretations of medieval humour, comedy, and laughter, we invite original research addressing the subjects of perception and appropriateness of laughter in the eyes of the church and lay authors and authorities; laughter as a form of mystical experience; ritualized laughter; laughter as a didactic weapon; laughter as an instrument of social control; and gendered experiences of laughter.

Ces dernières années, l'histoire du climat et la climatologie historique se sont essentiellement concentrées sur les impacts économiques et sociaux des changements climatiques de long terme, comme ceux qui se sont produits pendant l'Anomalie climatique médiévale ou le Petit âge glaciaire. Néanmoins, les préoccupations contemporaines concernant le changement climatique global ont posé de nouvelles questions urgentes aux historiens du climat : Comment les sociétés du passé ont-elles perçu les périodes de changement climatique rapide ? Dans quelle mesure ont-elles été affectées, non seulement sur le plan économique, mais aussi dans leur réflexion sur la relation entre l'homme et la nature ?

The figure of Perceval in its productions, themes and variations
La figure de Perceval, le « nice » chevalier, s’impose certes sur le plan d’une esthétique qui lui est propre et dépasse peut-être les intentions de ses auteurs, mais elle peut être interrogée comme porteuse d’une mythologie inhérente en ses sources et aussi, en tant que telle, comme production littéraire voire philosophique, ou encore l’utilisent replacée dans les contextes culturels de ses productions. Elle doit encore être examinée telle qu’elle a été reçue et telle que nous la recevons car elle a affaire à l’humain en chacun de nous et à notre humanité, car elle sollicite nos affects, nos représentations, nos imaginaires ? D’un autre point de vue, en quoi le Perceval que nous connaissons a-t-il à voir avec les mythologies indo-européennes auxquelles certains ont pu le rattacher, aux thèmes de la vengeance, à quel appel à l’autre monde répond le fils de la veuve dame quand le monde qu’il découvre est frappé de stérilité et de mort ?

2021 marks the bicentennial of the Greek uprising which resulted, at the end of a long war, in the country’s independence:Greece was thus born as a modern nation while romanticism, particularly in France, made it one of its favorite themes,carrying out out a vibrant philhellenic movement. The commemoration should not, however, cover up that there were andare other Greeces, from antiquity to our own day. The theme of this issue is also given in the plural since the construction of Greek art in the modern era is but one of the phenomena considered here. It is the plurality of constructions of Greecein art which unifies the collection of studies and essays which we envision.

Les XIVe journées Complutenses d'art médiéval proposent d'aborder la question de la matérialité comme facteur essentiel de la production artistique, ainsi que la poétique de l'immatérialité et la dimension intangible de l'expérience esthétique au cours du Moyen Âge. Les propositions de communication autour des thèmes suivants sont bienvenues : conditions matérielles de la création artistique ; pratiques et moyens sous-estimés ; utilisations poétiques et sémantiques du matériel et de l'immatériel ; histoire culturelle des matériaux ; sensorialité et immatérialité ; « transmatérialité » et « transmédialité ».

“Ògún/gú”, the emblem of innovation and technology of the “vodun” constellation
Lines of enquiry and epistemology for viable development in the 21st century
Après les éditions précédentes du festival international de Porto-Novo, le comité d’organisation se propose de se concentrer sur l’une des divinités de la constellation des vodûn en pays gun, comme thème général : Gu ou Ogu, figure guerrière de la constellation des vodûn : épistémologie d’un vodûn pionnier du développement. Cette réflexion participera au débat sur les révolutions technologiques opérées par le genre humain durant les âges, en lien avec son imaginaire socioculturel. À travers un décryptage des mécanismes de maîtrise et d’amélioration de la pyrotechnique comme critère décisif de définition et de différenciation des trois âges métallurgiques, il s’agira de rechercher la période d’apparition du dieu Gu et le rôle fondamental de l’homme noir dans la technoculture du fer. De façon plus simple, il s’agira de chercher à quel moment intervient le dieu Gu et, à travers cette recherche, de montrer le rôle de l’homme noir dans l’évolution des « techniques de fabrication du fer » et dans le « travail du fer ».

Symbolic and Material Changes to Cult Images in the Classical and Medieval Ages
Iconotropy is a Greek word which literally means “image turning.” William J. Hamblin (2007) defines the term as “the accidental or deliberate misinterpretation by one culture of the images or myths of another one, especially so as to bring them into accord with those of the first culture.” In fact, iconotropy is commonly the result of the way cultures have dealt with images from foreign or earlier cultures. Numerous accounts from classical antiquity and the Middle Ages detail how cult images were involved in such processes of misinterpretation, both symbolically and materially. Pagan cultures for example deliberately misrepresented ancient ritual icons and incorporated new meanings to the mythical substratum, thus modifying the myth’s original meanings and bringing about a profound change to existing religious paradigms. Iconotropy is a fundamental concept in religious history, particularly of contexts in which religious changes, often turbulent, took place. At the same time, the iconotropic process of appropriating cult images brought with it changes in the materiality of those images...The conference hopes to generate new research questions and creative synergies by initiating conversation and the exchange of ideas among scholars in the arts and humanities.

C’est créer un avant et un après par une action que l’on sait irréversible (car elle entérine la coupure) – même s’il est toujours possible de revenir (vers un arrière, mais par un pas en avant). Dans cette dynamique du partement, il s’agit de s’interroger, comme le dit la chanson, sur ce « comment te dire adieu ». "A tant m'en voy": figures du départ au Moyen Age est cette invitation à interroger cette coupure dans un volume collectif publié aux éditions Aras (Italie) début 2019.

The papers (in any European language) may relate to the medieval tradition and the avatars of this text / genre, and relate to philological, literary, cultural, naturalist, or iconographic aspects.

Comment le Moyen Âge pensait-il l'organisation ? De l’accumulation à la liste, de la liste au classement, choisir comment on organise, c’est choisir ce qu’il faut assembler. Or les catégories façonnent une certaine représentation du monde. Des cartes en TO, qui séparent les trois continents pour les organiser en cercle autour de Jérusalem, aux récits merveilleux, qui listent ou hiérarchisent les différentes espèces présentes sur terre, les classements sont orientés. Ils révèlent au sein des textes ainsi que des images, de sciences ou de littérature, une vision individuelle et/ou collective de l’ordonnancement du monde.

Incense and religion in ancient societies
Although several studies have drawn attention to the role of incense as an ingredient in ritual and a means of communication between men and gods, there remains no comprehensive examination of the practical functions and cultural semantics of incense in the ancient world, whether as a purifying agent, a performative sign of a transcendent world, an olfactory signal to summon the deity, a placatory libation, or food for the gods. Moreover, recent archaeological research has provided evidence (alongside literary, epigraphic and iconographic evidence) that the physical origins and chemical constituents of incense are complex and diverse, as are their properties : resins, vegetable gums, spices, and a welter of aromatic products that could be exhibited and burned before ancient eyes and noses. These were components of a multi-sensory religious experience in which music, colourful costumes, lavish banquets and tactile encounters defined the ritualsensibilities of the community.

SW4SH 2016: Second International Workshop
Classicists and historians are interested in developing textual databases, in order to gather and explore large amounts of primary source materials. For a long time, they mainly focused on text digitization and markup. They only recently decided to try to explore the possibility of transferring some analytical processes they previously thought incompatible with automation to knowledge engineering systems, thus taking advantage of the growing set of tools and techniques based on the languages and standards of the semantic Web, such as linked data, ontologies, and automated reasoning. SW4SH 2016 aims to provide a leading international and interdisciplinary forum for disseminating the latest research in the field of Semantic Web for the preservation and exploitation of our scientific heritage, the study of the history of ideas and their transmission.

Le mot « arborescence », du latin arborescere, arborescentem rend compte, par son suffixe « -escent », d’un procédé en cours. Par son radical « arbor », il renvoie également à l’idée d’un réseau formant une image identifiable, l’arbre, à même d’établir des liens cohérents entre un tout et ses parties. L’arborescence apparaît à la fois comme image et structure imagée.
