In the shadow of the masters: "secondary" artists in peinture, sculpture and architecture (12th-19th century)

The essential locus of the workshop has to be enquired into. How is a workshop organized? Which role is given to each of its members? From preparing colours to realising some parts of the painting, from building a mould to pouring liquid bronze into this casting mould, or from drawing a project to managing a work site, which evolution and which autonomy can students benefit from regarding their masters? Vasari has revealed a progressive vision of Art History, which still prevails in the discipline: students are inevitably ending up overstepping their master (Michelangelo and Ghirlandaio) or outshining their father (Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Pietro Bernini in the 17^th century). But what about those who were not taken on and those who remained unskilled workers in their lifetime? Was their role really secondary? The ways and means of these artists’ dependence and emancipation regarding their masters, their model, or their technique has to be addressed.

State-Rooms of Royal and Princely Palaces in Europe (14th-16th c.)

From the fourteenth to the sixteenth century, European monarchies saw a gradual centralisation of power. This was accompanied by the dissemination of political ideas that contributed to the making of a new image of the prince, which relied on visual instruments to assert and construct the prince’s sovereign power. Royal and princely residences with their designated state-rooms were at the centre of this phenomenon. Their decors, particularly during ceremonies, reflected political interests and ambitions that were essential to the image of the prince. By placing a particular emphasis on the decor of those state-rooms, this workshop aims to increase our insights into the relations between the architecture, decoration, and rituals of monarchical power in state-rooms from the late middle ages to the beginning of the early modern period.

Designing, living in and representing houses in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance between the Loire and the Rhine

L’architecture et l’espace domestiques sont au cœur du projet « Concevoir, habiter, représenter la maison au Moyen Âge et à la Renaissance entre Loire et Rhin », deuxième volet du colloque « La forme de la maison » prévu les 26 et 27 mai 2016 à Amiens. Ils sont compris dans un sens large incluant différents points de vue sur l’habitat de ses formes les plus sommaires aux plus élaborées, rurales ou urbaines. La « maison », entendue comme une unité à fonction principalement domestique, est privilégiée, ce qui exclut les espaces résidentiels des châteaux et des palais si ce n’est à titre de comparaison.

Scale and the challenge of matter

Le colloque organisé par l’Institut national d’histoire de l’art, l’université de Nantes et les Archives nationales a l’ambition d’aborder les problématiques liées à la représentation miniature de l’espace bâti dans une optique différente de celles ayant prévalu jusqu'alors. Le phénomène d' « architecturation » qui voit la prolifération du vocabulaire architectural dans toutes les formes d'art ne cesse en effet d’interroger les historiens du Moyen Âge. Or, ce phénomène ne peut être véritablement compris que si l'on prend en compte les transformations que le changement d’échelle implique pour le travail des artisans et dans la réception de leurs œuvres.

The Transept and its Upper Levels in the High Medieval Church

Towards a New Functional Approach (Architecture, Decor, Liturgy and Sound)

This conference is jointly organized by the Catholic University of Angers (Faculty of Humanities) and the University of Lausanne (Department of History of Art). It aims to analyse in greater detail the spaces of the transept and to explore their relation(s) with the choir / heart of the church. This two-day international and interdisciplinary symposium will work towards bringing together and assessing the results, often dispersed, of past and present research, building upon debates involving specialists from multiple backgrounds and finishing with a round table which will propose a summary of the papers and explore further insights into new research directions.

Courts and Courtly Cultures in Early Modern Italy and Europe

Models and Languages

The conference will focus on the topic of court culture in Lombardy and North Italy, within the conceptual framework of the SNF Sinergia project: Constructing identity: visual, spatial, and literary cultures in Lombardy, 14^th to 16^th centuries. This interdisciplinary project, which includes five research unities in the Universities of Geneva, Lausanne, Zurich, and EPFL at Lausanne, works on Visconti and Sforza ages, when Lombardy, one of the most important European regions, established itself as a distinct political and cultural entity. It has been an exemplary case of the construction of a cultural identity, whose repercussions still resonate in present-day Italy. As a part of a potent political project, it has been sustained by complex mechanisms of self-representation and the imposition of a prestige taste. The conference will conclude the research of the Sinergia project discussing its results in a wider historical, literary, architectural and artistic context and verifying its methodological approaches at the light of multiple points of view.
