  Studying medieval buildings (1850-1950)

  Actors, stakes and methods

  The history of medieval architecture was written, from the mid-19^th century, by men whose training, career and objectives were variable. In fact, they each developed their methods of analysis and their reading grids of medieval buildings, which are at the origin of our practices in art history and archeology. To be interested in these men and their works: this is the purpose of this study day that will allow to implement, at the scale of Western Europe, this epistemological approach of the medieval sciences dedicated to the castral, civil or religious building. Beyond the monuments themselves, which take the place of a major source, correspondences of scientists, archives of learned societies, photographs, old drawings, or the funds of historical monuments, for example, may be used to deal with one or more of the topics presented below.

  Aquatic Animals and Monsters of the Northern Seas Imagination, knowledge, exploitation, from Antiquity to 1600

  The Colloquium is devoted to the history of fish, aquatic monsters and mammals in the northern seas (the English Channel, North Sea, Baltic Sea, Norwegian Sea, the North Atlantic), from antiquity to 1600. The colloquium is based on three themes: knowledge and the transmission of knowledge (medical knowledge, zoological knowledge, descriptions, identifications); savoir-faire and exploitation (aquatic farming, fishing, cooking, medicine); explorations – real and imaginary.

  The Gothic structures: in pursuit of balance

  Leur stabilité et leurs confortations à l’époque médiévale

  Raised from 1242 to replace the Romanesque choir, the choir of the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Tournai (Belgium) is resolutely an exemple of Gothic architecture the most advanced in the French royal domain. Besides a number of reasons, the verticality and slenderness of the construction, the fasciculated pillars, the buttressing thrown outward shows this well. Without participating in the rivalry of the first half of the 13th century to build the tallest cathedral, it plays nevertheless on the extremely lightweight of the construction, which was trying to reach on other contemporary sites. Beauvais is the most famous case, but it is not unique. In Tournai, as elsewhere, important stabilizing work was needed on these monuments that had « exceeded the limit ».

  Vie et mort du cheval : des pratiques médiévales aux traditions camarguaises

  Xe congrès de la Société d'archéolgie médiévale

  La Société d’archéologie médiévale a décidé d’organiser son Xe congrès à Arles les 3, 4 et 5 mai 2012, à l’occasion de la célébration du 500e anniversaire de la confrérie des gardians. Le congrès porte principalement sur la place du cheval dans la société médiévale et moderne mais inclut aussi une réflexion d’ordre ethnoarchéologique sur les traditions équestres en Camargue, prolongée par des démonstrations extérieures le dernier jour.

  L'écriture de l'histoire… et de la préhistoire d'hier à aujourd'hui

  Colloque organisé à Lyon du 14 au 16 mai 2008

  Le passé de l’historien se construit dans le présent. C’est une construction, et une construction scripturaire. C’est pourquoi l’histoire, disait Michel de Certeau dans L’écriture de l’histoire, est « historiographie ». À ce titre, on peut dire la même chose de la préhistoire. Comme pour l’histoire, le passé que construit le préhistorien varie, en fonction du présent dans lequel il le construit. Ce colloque, organisé dans le cadre du CEROR (Centre d’Étude et de Recherche sur l’Occident Romain) par Sophie A. de Beaune et Michel Debidour, professeurs à l’Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3, a pour vocation à réunir préhistoriens et historiens autour d’un thème de réflexion commune : l'influence du contexte idéologique, politique, religieux… sur nos pratiques et nos interprétations en archéologie et en histoire.
