Freedom and Death in the Greek Revolution of 1821
Microhistorical analyses of battles in the Epirotic and Balkan areas
In 2021, during the 200th anniversary of the proclamation of the Greek Revolution of 1821, the Department of History and Archeology will hold another international conference on "Freedom and Death in the Greek Revolution of 1821. Microhistorical analyses of battles in the Epirotic and the Balkan area". The conference will address issues of Greek historiography, such as the Modern Greek Enlightenment in Epirus, Souli, and the networks of Souliotes; operations in Epirus; the battles of Peta, Philhellenes, Plaka, and Kompoti; Lord Byron on Epirus; the strategies of Ali Pasha; the Epirotic networks in Moldovlachia; and the lives and deaths of revolutionaries. Using modern methodological tools and a microhistory approach to conduct systematic research of both new and old archives, the conference will offer original and interesting approaches to an already rich discussion.

Italy and Yugoslavia in the Interwar Period
Monographic issue of “Qualestoria. Rivista di storia contemporanea”
The signing of the Treaty of Rapallo in 1920 made it possible to find a solution to the Italian-Yugoslav dispute over the north-eastern Adriatic border, a solution that would last substantially until the Italian invasion of the neighbouring kingdom in World War 2. Relations between Italy and Yugoslavia, particularly since the end of the 1920s, with the beginning of the more decidedly revisionist phase of fascist foreign policy regarding the structures of the Danubian-Balkan area, were never easy. However, the signing of the Treaty of Rapallo represented an undoubtedly important moment, which greatly contributed to restore a climate of collaboration between the two countries, heavily jeopardized by border nationalism and by the D’Annunzio’s “impresa di Fiume”, interrupted precisely by the Treaty of Rapallo.

Peripheries, Minorities and Taboos in the films of Marcel Łoziński, Pál Schiffer and Želimir Žilnik
The international conference bears a transdisciplinary outlook as it cross-references a variety of scientific fields (history of cinema, aesthetics, philosophy, history, political science, anthropology, sociology, etc.). A film retrospective of documentary films will be held at the Cinémathèque du documentaire (Centre Pompidou, Paris), as well as screenings followed by debates and panel discussions at Inalco in the presence of the filmmakers Marcel Łoziński and Želimir Žilnik.

Historiography of the Perception of Islam through Manuscripts, Korans and their Displacement
The aim of this workshop is to approach the question of the relationship between Christianity and Islam through the study of the production, circulation and uses of Arabic manuscripts, and mainly Korans, in the late medieval and early modern Mediterranean Europe. Our assumption is that the Balkans, Italy and the Iberian Peninsula form an axis of circulation which is especially significant for our understanding of the Mediterranean Sea as a comprehensive space of cultural, political and religious contact.

The multiple Antiquities of Greek modernity (19th-21st centuries)
Dans un XIXe siècle où la discussion sur les origines nationales bat son plein dans toute l’Europe, les Grecs auraient-ils pu se dispenser d’une instance de légitimation aussi flatteuse et aussi prometteuse que l’Antiquité ? De fait, la Grèce ancienne devient d’emblée, un élément déterminant dans l’élaboration difficultueuse d’une identité néo-hellénique et d’une l’idéologie étatique. Nous voudrions explorer ce retour du passé dans le présent en questionnant la diversité et l’hétérogénéité des « Antiquités » créées et véhiculées aux XIXe et XXe siècles, le contexte (national, culturel, politique) dans lequel les diverses, et souvent contradictoires, représentations de l’Antiquité ont été formulées en interférant les unes avec les autres, les manières dont le contexte dominant de l’histoire nationale a été consolidé ou sapé par d’autres cadres de pensée projetant sur l’Antiquité des demandes alternatives.

Troisièmes rencontres d'études balkaniques
Ce colloque s’inscrit dans la continuité des deuxièmes rencontres d’études balkaniques « À la recherche des Balkans : entre Europe et Méditerranée ? » tenues en juin 2016 à Marseille (Mucem et Villa Méditerranée). Il vise à valoriser la reprise depuis cette date des activités de l’Association française d’études sur les Balkans (AFEBalk) et à accroître le rayonnement de la recherche francophone sur cette région en favorisant les synergies entre chercheurs et chercheuses travaillant sur l’Europe du Sud-Est et basées en France ou dans d’autres pays. Les rencontres de 2019 s’intéresseront aux espaces urbains, un objet se prêtant naturellement à la pluridisciplinarité, comme le reflète l’essor des études urbaines en histoire ou dans les sciences sociales du contemporain.

Resilience, participation and adhesion of Greek communities in the construction of an empire (2nd century BC– 1st century AD)
Ce colloque adressé aux jeunes chercheurs propose d'étudier la manière dont les communautés grecques réagirent à la progression de l'imperium Romanum en Grèce entre le IIe s. av. n.è. et le Ier s. de n.è, depuis la seconde guerre de Macédoine jusqu'à l'année des Quatre Empereurs. Nous voulons retracer les étapes et les éléments de cette histoire où l’ingérence administrative et militaire de Rome dans les affaires des communautés grecques, parfois brutale, céda progressivement la place, selon des rythmes variés et non sans moments de crise, à la participation plus ou moins active et délibérée de ces communautés au fonctionnement de l’Empire. Comment s'adaptèrent ces communautés grecques s'adaptèrent-elles et s'accomodèrent-elles localement à un nouvel ordre global ?

10th international conference of doctoral students in Byzantine Studies
Les rencontres internationales des doctorants en études byzantines ont pour objectif de rassembler les doctorants dont les recherches touchent au monde byzantin quelle que soit leur spécialité (archéologie, histoire, histoire de l’art, littérature, philologie…). Elles visent à développer les échanges scientifiques entre doctorants en leur donnant la possibilité de présenter leur thèse ou un dossier plus précis auprès de leurs collègues et de professeurs et chercheurs.

25th Modern Greek Studies Conference of French-speaking universities
The biennial Congress of French-speaking Modern Greek Studies scholars will take place from October 12th to October 14th, 2017 in Aix-en-Provence. Its aim is to bring together researchers from every domain of the humanities and social sciences. The issue at the heart of this 15th Congress is the historical progress of certain areas of study towards the status of full-fledged disciplines of the humanities and social sciences in Greece from the moment of the establishment of the Greek state (1830) and within a context allowing the study of this phenomenon in both its regional and its international dimensions.
The works of the Congress will be organized around the following themes:
1. The emergence, institutionalization, reproduction and diffusion of disciplinary bodies of knowledge.
2. The way each discipline positions itself with relation to other fields of knowledge and implements its theoretical foundations
3. The processes of establishing legitimacy for the new disciplines and for the groups framing them
4. Disciplinarization and the field of Modern Greek Studies
Abstracts must be submitted before February 28th, 2017, in either French or English.

Pour la huitième année consécutive, les Rencontres internationales des doctorants en études byzantines se dérouleront à l'Institut national d'Histoire de l'Art (INHA) les 2 et 3 octobre 2015. Organisées sur deux jours, les rencontres byzantines ont pour objectif de rassembler des doctorants de toutes nationalités consacrant leurs recherches à la civilisation byzantine, quels que soient leurs domaines de spécialisation (art, archéologie, histoire, lettres...). Afin de mettre en valeur la diversité des disciplines, aucune thématique n'est imposée. Chaque intervenant présente son sujet de recherche ou développe une problématique liée à son sujet pendant vingt minutes.

Geoarchaeological research in the Black Sea and the Azov Sea
Since the first studies undertaken in 1783 by Gablitz on the chora of Chersonesos, the Black Sea comprises an important area to look at the rural and coastal development of the Greek colonial world. Systematic surveying of ditches and walls that line the western coast of Crimea, initiated within the framework of Catherine II’s Greek project, began several decades before the earliest excavations of the urban spaces in 1832. A decisive new step was made during the 1960s, when archaeological surveys provided fresh insights into the internal organization of several kleroi close to Chersonesos, Kerkinitis and Kalos Limen. Around the same time, in the western Black Sea, the first research on the territory of Istros began, complemented by numerous geomorphological studies of the neighbouring Danube Delta. The foundations of geoarchaeological inquiry had been laid, and these have since been added to thanks to recent research undertaken throughout the Pontic area.

The Vulnerability and Marginality of Youth in the Mediterranean Basin (19th-20th centuries)
French Journal for the History of “Unconventional” Childhood
The Revue d’histoire de l’enfance “irrégulière” (the French Journal for the History of “Unconventional” Childhood) will devote its next issue to the different perceptions and management policies focused on irregular or marginal youth in the countries of the Mediterranean basin (i.e. the northern coast of the Mediterranean, the Middle East, the Mashriq and the Maghreb) throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. Specifically, we expect that the study of the public policies adopted by the countries of the region to deal with their youth will put the hypothesis of the unity and singularity of the Mediterranean to the test: either it will allow some sort of shared approach to emerge or, on the contrary, it will expose the Mediterranean as a cultural and ideological construct.

Au-delà des données biographiques inédites, nous sommes intéressés par l’exemplarité du destin de Marthe Bibesco. Dans ce sens, nous voulons investiguer le profil de la femme intellectuelle, écrivaine, dynamique, mondaine, voyageuse.

Intra-Group Tensions After the Fall of Communism: Causes, Consequences, and Contexts
Much has been written about the intricacies of acceptance and integration of immigrants who are racial, ethnic and/or confessional ‘others’ in relation to host populations. There are many examples of co-ethnics’ interaction which are overtly or latently accompanied by intra-group conflict, tension and misunderstanding, but academic coverage of co-ethnics’ encounters is far less ‘mature’ in terms of conceptualization, and literature devoted to these issues is far less abundant. The pattern of peoples' interaction being studied is usually a result of various kinds of population movement provoked by serious socio-political cataclysms in the 20th and 21st centuries, including the collapse of multi-national states and the intensification of labor migration resulting from post-socialist economic transformation. Our aim is to bring together international scholars who could present results of their latest research on these topics, preferably from a comparative and/or micro-level perspective.

Dwelling/living in the Post-Yugoslav space
Following the European seminar held in Tours on this topic in June 2012, the PY network invites young researchers in Social Sciences working on the post-Yugoslav space to submit articles for a forthcoming publication (in French or in English) in an influential European journal. The issue will be titled: “Dwelling/living in the Post-Yugoslav space”, focusing on the evolution of relations between space and people in former Yugoslavia. Our ambition is to offer a fresh view and a better understanding of political, economic, socially rapid and complex evolutions in the region and to participate more broadly to a better understanding of socio-spatial processes in our contemporary world. The objective is also to facilitate, to promote and to make visible research analysis of young researchers working on the post-Yugoslav area.

Répondant à l’objectif de l’association, ces journées ont pour but principal de favoriser les échanges entre les jeunes chercheurs, par-delà les barrières disciplinaires, géographiques ou chronologiques de leurs sujets de recherche. Ce sera en particulier l’occasion d’exposer des travaux et de discuter de questions épistémologiques entre doctorants inscrits en France. Peu de structures y favorisent en effet la confrontation de recherches qui ont pour dénominateur commun de porter sur des sociétés marquées par la culture islamique dans toute sa variété, avec toutes les doxa-s qu’entraîne ce point commun.

Second European research seminar of the PY research network
Le second séminaire de recherche du réseau PY sera accueilli par la MMSH d'Aix-en-Provence le 18 Janvier 2013. Celui-ci s'inscrit dans un cycle de quatre séminaires destinés à construire et renforcer le réseau PY, regroupant des jeunes chercheurs travaillant sur les reconfigurations et les mutations – mais aussi les continuités - des territoires et des sociétés post-yougoslaves ainsi qu’à faire naître une réflexion collective sur des thématiques et des espaces relativement peu abordés par la recherche francophone. Cette seconde journée sera alors consacrée à l'étude des processus d'européanisation en ex-Yougoslavie, mais aussi à l'intérogation des outils théoriques et analytiques employés pour les étudier.
