LGBTI and Queer Art, Culture and Activism
In France, a few years after the law authorizing same-sex marriage, LGBTQ associations are now facing new struggles, fighting for access to assisted procreation or the creation of a communal archive center. Drawing on these dynamics, this conference aims at interrogating the bonds between LGBTQ forms of arts, cultures and activisms. We look forward to opening a space for academics and grassroots activists, whether they be engaged in institutional collectives or not, to exchange, reflect and dialogue. LGBTQ-related topics appear to be often overlooked in French research networks. We aim to make it more visible and richer, and make it dialogue with local, national and international networks of academics and activists. The « LGBTI and Queer Art, Culture and Activism » online conference is jointly organised by the Université de Lorraine and its research centres (2L2S and CREM), with the support of the French ministry of culture (DRAC Grand-Est), and the LGBTIQ centre Couleurs Gaies.

L'appel à communications pour la journée d'étude « Corps en mouvement(s) », organisée par l'Association des doctorants de l'Ouest en confluences (AIDOC), est ouvert aux masterant·e·s, doctorant·e·s et jeunes chercheur·e·s. La thématique est comprise au sens large, et questionne à la fois les relations entre l'évolution des corps et les identités individuelles, ou les performances, qu'elles soient artistiques, sportives, etc. Une approche davantage géographique et sociale permet d'envisager le sujet sous l'angle des déplacements et migrations ou des mouvements sociaux.

En somme, les processus de co-construction sont au cœur de notre réflexion et invitent à étudier les rencontres entre acteurs sociaux différents.

Conference, symposium - Sociology
Le réseau thématique « Sociologie des arts et de la culture » de l’Association française de sociologie (RT14) s’associe au réseau thématique 24 « Sexe, classe, race : rapports sociaux et construction de l’altérité » à l'occasion d’un colloque articulant leur objets thématiques respectifs. Cette manifestation entend offrir un espace de discussion à des chercheur·e·s attaché·e·s à interroger l’articulation des rapports de pouvoir de classe, de sexe et de race (notamment) au sein des mondes de l’art et des industries culturelles. Ce colloque vise à faire émerger de nouvelles pistes de réflexions pour saisir les transformations en cours au sein de l’univers de production des biens symboliques.

1959-1985, through the prism of the Paris Biennial
Cette session vise à discuter la valeur symbolique, culturelle et politique de la Biennale de Paris, des années 1950 aux années 1970, et sa réception dans deux contextes totalitaires de part et d'autre du rideau de fer. D'une part, une analyse critique de la Biennale de Paris par la presse polonaise du tournant des années 1950-1960 permettra de positionner cet événement par rapport au climat politique fluctuant de la période et aux débats locaux sur le statut de l'art moderne. D'autre part, l'étude de l'interaction entre les institutions franquistes, les artistes et la Biennale aidera à comprendre la position de cet événement (et son instrumentalisation) dans le contexte des politiques culturelles du régime aussi bien que dans celui de la montée des mouvements hostiles à la dictature et des luttes pour la construction de l'art moderne en Espagne.

Quels liens existe-il entre art, intervention et justice sociale ? Que signifient les expressions : intervention, pratique, intervention individuelle, communautaire, engagement social, changement social ? Tout d’abord, comment définir « intervention » et « art » ? Une simple recherche Google recense au moins 29 synonymes d’intervention. Ici, nous explorerons les interventions visant le changement social. Donc, comment ceci s’articule-t-il ? Comment l’art intervient-il sur le social ? Comment le social peut-il être appréhendé par l’art ? Comment l’art et la culture conjugués à une approche de changement social peuvent-ils transformer des institutions, des pratiques ou à tout le moins en atténuer les conséquences difficiles ? Comment éviter l’instrumentalisation de l’art ? Comment parler de résistances et de résiliences ? Que veut dire Art, avec un grand A ?

Cette mise en lumière du réel s’accompagne d’un travail de composition sonore dont il s’agit d'examiner la place dans la construction du sens et dans l’expression de la violence. Quel rôle joue le son dans la composition audiovisuelle ? Quelles sont les fonctions de la composition musicale ? Quels sont les moyens du traitement sonore ? « Moi, à Los Angeles, j’ai surtout vu des murs : tout d’abord des graffitis beaux comme des peintures, signés par des dizaines d’anonymes sur des murs longs comme des serpents mythiques. (…) On dit murals en américain, je les appelle murals. Mural come mur vivant, mur vital, mur moral. Mural comme mur parlant, mur murmurant. Mural comme un mur râle, l’autre pas[1] ». Dans son #9, la revue Urbanités a décidé de porter le regard sur des objets souvent ignorés par les études urbaines, et qui sont pourtant sous nos yeux, en ville, à chaque coin de rue. L’enjeu de ce numéro est de se pencher aussi sur ce qui est en jeu, socialement mais aussi spatialement, quand une image existe en ville, sur les raisons et les modalités de son existence dans l’espace, ainsi que sur les effets sociaux et spatiaux de son exposition en ville.

Protest is an intrinsic part of human culture, which enables subjects to express their dissatisfaction with existing social structures and hegemonic hierarchies of power. Protests have occurred across time periods and contexts, and have taken numerous different forms, ranging from personal expressions of discontent to united movements for revolutionary change. Protests can be individual or collective, personal or political, spontaneous or carefully planned, but they are generally orientated towards destabilising the status quo and establishing new modes of existence. Over the ages, political, social and cultural protests have successfully toppled authoritarian regimes, exposed and confronted dominant imbalances of power, and ameliorated conditions for disenfranchised members of society.

Doctoral workshop in visual anthropology (ADOCAV 3)
Le séminaire est destiné aux étudiants et jeunes chercheurs dont les travaux s’inscrivent même partiellement dans les thématiques de l’anthropologie visuelle. Il a pour vocation de créer une dynamique commune de recherche à partir d’échange et d'approfondissement des travaux en cours. Tout en respectant la pluralité d’approches, de méthodes et d’objets propres aux travaux des étudiants, les séances du séminaire ont pour but de croiser et de faire converser deux aspects de la discipline : une anthropologie des images et du visuel, et une anthropologie visuelle caractérisée par une pratique de l’image.

Latino-American women and artistic and political commitment
L’approche par le genre est un excellent angle de mise en relief des inégalités et discriminations subies par une partie de l’humanité, comme de mise en évidence des violences concrètes et symboliques exercées par les systèmes dominants (patriarcaux, capitalistes, colonialistes et post-colonialistes) et leurs agents. Cette journée d’études consistera à mettre en perspective les présences artistiques et politiques de femmes latino-américaines dans ces systèmes, en tant que résistances à ces derniers. Les modes et figures d'interventions politico-artistiques de femmes latino-américaines feront donc l’objet de nos réflexions.

Censorship, Emotions and Cultural Regulation in South Asia
This workshop aims at exploring issues of literary and artistic censorship in South Asia (India, Pakistan and Bangladesh) by focusing on the way anticipated "hurt" often justifies the policing and regulation of the artistic sphere (cinema, visual arts, literature). Our point of departure is, in the words of Arjun Appadurai, the observation that culture is today the field "where fantasies of purity, authenticity, borders and security can be enacted" and that the same censors patrol the boundaries of politics and aesthetics (Coetzee). In the Indian subcontinent "hurt feelings" are often reactivated or cultivated, staged and mass-mediatised to claim recognition and legitimacy in the public sphere, to require compensation or "redressal". Many artists, writers and academics point to a politics of ultra-sensitivity and a thriving "marketplace of outrage". Our objective in this workshop is to question the vocabulary, topicality and tangibility of "hurt" in the public sphere on these issues of artistic regulation in South Asia, and to understand what it means to say that words or images wound.

Changing the Tune: Popular Music and Politics in the XXIst century
From the fall of communism to the Arab spring
Popular Music scholars have devoted considerable attention to the relationship between music and power. The symbolic practices through which subcultures state and reinforce identities have been widely documented (mainly in the field of Cultural, Gender and Postcolonial Studies), as has the increasingly political and revolutionary dimensions of popular music. Most studies have focused on the genres and movements that developed with and in the aftermath of the 1960’s counterculture. Yet little has been written about how the politics of popular music has reflected the social, geopolitical and technological changes of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, after the fall of Communism. Still, the music of the Arab Spring or of the Occupy and Indignados movements have been scarcely commented upon while they attest to significant changes in the way music is used by activists and revolutionaries today.

L’IISMM et la Direction de l’audiovisuel de l’EHESS, en partenariat avec l’HiCSA de l’Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne organisent une table ronde avec des cinéastes (de films documentaires et de fiction) témoins et/ou engagés dans les transformations politiques et sociales qui bouleversent notamment la Tunisie, l’Egypte, la Syrie et le Yémen. L’objectif de cette rencontre est de croiser les questionnements des cinéastes avec les analyses de chercheurs en sciences sociales et d’étudier comment le cinéma permet la construction d’un regard sur ces événements par ailleurs abondamment présentés sur les petits écrans de télévision et d’ordinateur. -

This conference will explore the relationship between music and migration by providing new insights into the creative practices and life-stories of migrant artists across the globe. A core theme of the conference will be the motivations and experiences of migrant musicians who leave, return, stay or move beyond their localities. Through the focus on such specific groups of migrants the conference aims to throw light on their identifications in their artistic and every-day lives. Past and on-going research shows that patterns of migration are clearly linked to transnational networks. By focusing on the role of migrant musicians within such networks, this conference seeks to analyse and understand the extent to which musicians’ networks may or may not be special cases within migration studies.
