Summer School - Representation
XIXe école de printemps en histoire de l’art
La dix-neuvième école de printemps du réseau international de formation à l’histoire de l’art est organisée par l’université de Reims Champagne-Ardenne du 21 au 25 juin 2021. Elle réunira (si les conditions le permettent) dans la ville et ses environs une cinquantaine d’étudiantes et d’étudiants, d’enseignantes et d’enseignants pour une semaine de formation à la recherche internationale autour du thème de l’art et de l’alimentation. Elle accueillera deux sessions de la dix-huitième école (« Art and Text ») qui aurait dû avoir lieu à Cambridge en mai 2020. Selon l’évolution de la situation sanitaire, une hybridation numérique maintiendrait le caractère pleinement international de cette édition.

Cette journée d’étude est consacrée aux trajectoires et aux collaborations des multiples acteurs qui participent à la production des photographies, et contribuent dans le même temps à façonner leurs modalités d’existence dans l’espace social. En se plaçant derrière l’image, et non plus devant elle, il s’agira d’examiner les compétences, les métiers ou les professions impliqués dans la conception, le financement et/ou la fabrication d’images photographiques destinées à être diffusées à de multiples exemplaires auprès d’un vaste public. On peut ainsi penser aux éditeurs, photograveurs, tireurs et retoucheurs, directeurs artistiques, graphistes et iconographes.

Reclaim: Narratives of African Women Artists
This symposium is part of a wider collaboration with the Africa 2020 Season, a pan-African and multidisciplinary project taking place in France from December 2020 to mid-July 2021. Africa 2020 is an invitation, by N’Goné Fall, General Commissioner of the Season, to look at and understand the world from an African perspective. In this context, the AWARE association: Archives of Women Artists, Research and Exhibitions whose goal is to improve the exposure of 20th century women artists, sought the expertise of scholars, artists and curators from Africa and around the world to raise the issue of the visibility of women artists in Africa.

The Association belge de science politique (ABSP) and the Associations francophones de science politique (CoSPoF) congress 2021
Des soutiens-gorges jetés par les féministes américaines dans les « poubelles de la liberté » à la nudité des Femen, du polo Fred Perry des suprémacistes américains aux tee-shirts no logo des altermondialistes, du béret du Che au keffieh d’Arafat, le vêtement, et parfois son absence, nourrit le spectre des résistances, alimente la scénographie des contestations, leur confère une visibilité quitte à jouer, comme les Black Blocs, sur l’anonymat protecteur. Ce projet comprendra trois axes : le rôle du vêtement dans la construction des antagonismes, sa place dans les processus de mobilisation et son étude en tant que vecteur de circulation interculturelle des modalités de la résistance.

LGBTI and Queer Art, Culture and Activism
In France, a few years after the law authorizing same-sex marriage, LGBTQ associations are now facing new struggles, fighting for access to assisted procreation or the creation of a communal archive center. Drawing on these dynamics, this conference aims at interrogating the bonds between LGBTQ forms of arts, cultures and activisms. We look forward to opening a space for academics and grassroots activists, whether they be engaged in institutional collectives or not, to exchange, reflect and dialogue. LGBTQ-related topics appear to be often overlooked in French research networks. We aim to make it more visible and richer, and make it dialogue with local, national and international networks of academics and activists. The « LGBTI and Queer Art, Culture and Activism » online conference is jointly organised by the Université de Lorraine and its research centres (2L2S and CREM), with the support of the French ministry of culture (DRAC Grand-Est), and the LGBTIQ centre Couleurs Gaies.

Women and madness under the Ancien Régime
À la différence de la folie masculine, souvent plus « cérébrale » et parfois même admirée, le discours médical inscrit historiquement la folie féminine dans la nature même de la femme, folle dans son corps, mais aussi folle de son corps. Cette pathologisation du désir féminin, perçu comme une menace, est un moyen de contrôle et de domination qui va bien au-delà de la sexualité ; toute femme qui sort de la place qui lui est assignée dans l’ordre social ou moral, décidé par les hommes, est ainsi vite soupçonnée d’être folle. Artistes, mystiques, intellectuelles, femmes politiques ou femmes errantes ou de mauvaise vie, celles qui semblent refuser les normes genrées sont ainsi couramment désignées comme des furies, des hystériques ou encore des lunatiques ? La SIÉFAR propose de lancer une vaste enquête sur un sujet qui ne fait qu’émerger.

Urgent issue of The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge
This special issue, Tilting, seeks to take up themes that have animated the Blackwood’s program and mandate throughout the last several years: questions of connectivity, the challenges of public and private space, community and/in isolation; imperatives to re-structure modes and methodologies of care, including revaluing care work, confronting collective care responsibilities within colonial and capitalist structures, and engaging with the infrastructures, aesthetics, contestations, and radical possibilities of mutual aid; responses to the precarization of art, labour, and life; interest in what modes of knowledge production, circulation, and re-distribution are vital to us now, and how these networks might take new form. These urgencies continue to drive Blackwood programming (and this forthcoming publication), supporting and activating artists, curators, and writers who incite us to be responsive, critical, and answerable.

The construction, circulation and appropriations of a global star image
Beyond the fascination that “Garbo’s face” inspired, which Roland Barthes compared to a “Platonic idea” in a famous passage from Mythologies (1957), this symposium wishes to study the different faces of Garbo, embedding her screen performances as well as the extra-filmic material which helped build her star persona within a range of social and cultural contexts. Contributions will address both the construction of her image (comparing, for instance, the promotional discourse surrounding her in different countries) and its reception, be it by critics or “ordinary” filmgoers.

Body and soul. The life and death of women in the Early Middle Ages
History and archaeology
Inspiré à la fois par la richesse des terres du Grand-Est sur les traces d'un monachisme féminin original et le profond renouvellement de l'historiographie et de l'archéologie concernant les femmes au haut Moyen Âge durant les dernières années, ce colloque voudrait faire le portrait de la variété des femmes comme personnes et comme membres de communautés, et préciser les caractéristiques de la féminité en Occident avant le XIIe siècle. En utilisant toutes les sources documentaires, il s'intéressera à la condition des femmes les mieux documentées mais également, dans une démarche d'anthropologie historique, à celles des couches les moins aisées de la société. L'archéologie funéraire avec toutes ses disciplines connexes, contribuera à nourrir le dialogue sur l'anthropologie du féminin durant le premier Moyen Âge.

The Classics in the Pulpit. Ancient Literature and Preaching in the Middle Ages
The aim of the conference is to shed new light on this both striking and irritating practice. Papers (25 min) can deal with topics such as the reasons and occasions for the use of the classics in preaching, the hermeneutic and literary strategies applied in order to adapt pagan mythology to homiletic needs, the social and educational background of preachers and their audiences, the connections of classicizing sermons with other fields of literature such as vernacular poetry, or the discourse they provoked within the clerical milieu. Applications from all relevant disciplines (e.g. history, literature, theology, philosophy) are welcome.

Narrative forms and co-production in Arab cinemas
Norms, constraints, and margins of freedom
Film industry in the Arab world remains generally underdeveloped. Arab countries still depend on international film support funds, mainly European. This puts Arab producers, scriptwriters and filmmakers in a subaltern position in relation to European producers and funders, whose expectations in terms of content as well as narrative and aesthetic forms end up strongly impacting the film creation process. On the other hand, margins of freedom and resistance can be created within this system. This edition of Regards aims at addressing the complex relation between Arab cinemas and international film support funds.

"Fight The Power"? Hip-hop and the social relations to power
Ce séminaire de recherche du Centre de recherches sociologiques et politiques de Paris (Cresppa) explore les rapports de pouvoir dans les musiques hip-hop sous les angles esthétique, politique et professionnel. Il y est question des rapports de pouvoir qui configurent les industries musicales et les trajectoires des artistes et personnels de renfort des musiques hip-hop, mais aussi des contestations sociales portées dans et hors des mondes du hip-hop, notamment du point de vue des rapports sociaux de classe, de sexe et de race. Les musiques hip-hop y sont abordées en tant que phénomène français mais aussi international, en dialogue avec les collègues étrangers invité·e·s au sein du Cresppa ou de passage en France.

“Marine Feet and Vesuvian Eyes”: The Volcanic Aesthetics of Maria Orsini Natale
Edited Collection
This volume intends to fill a gap in the critical reception of a remarkable Southern Italian woman writer. A journalist, a poet and a writer, Maria Orsini Natale (1928-2010) lived and worked at the foot of Vesuvius, and began writing at age 69, receiving several literary recognitions. Her novel, initially written as Ottocento Vesuviano, then entitled Francesca and Nunziata, and published for the first time in 1995, was also made into a 2001 film directed by Lina Wertmüller, starring Sophia Loren and Giancarlo Giannini. The book earned her a semifinalist’s place in the Strega Prize, the most prestigious Italian literary award, and features a family from Amalfi, dedicated for generations to the white art of pasta making. More than fiction, it illustrates what in Neapolitan is called a ‘cunto’, part historical account and part allegorical tale, derived from a reservoir of collective as well as personal memories.

AFECCAV 2020 congress
Ce congrès sera consacré au sujet du corps, considéré comme construction culturelle qui, à l’ère de la modernité ou de la post-modernité, associe à la fois les pratiques et discours d’éducation et les représentations qu’en offrent le cinéma et plus largement les médias. A l’heure où Sex Education, diffusé sur Netflix, en est à une deuxième saison et où le body horror est devenu grand public, nombreux sont les films, les tutoriels, les séries télévisées, les films éducatifs qui font un usage spécifique,renouvelé de la présence des corps et délivrent une conception des corps digne d’être envisagée, tant par les chercheurs-euses en études filmiques que ceux et celles en éducation. C’est la conjonction de ces deux modes, traditionnellement envisagés de manière disjointe, dans des sphères de recherche séparées qui fera la spécificité de la réflexion menée au cours de ce congrès international.

A conference, workshop and concert program
Les femmes ont longtemps été exclues du monde musical et de ses représentations. Et pourtant, dès lors que l’on s’efforce de lire entre les lignes de la portée, on se rend compte que, bien que trop souvent occultées, elles sont omniprésentes : muses ou egerias bien sûr, mais aussi souvent serenas (sirènes), pionnières ou fadetas liuras (fées libres), poétesses, chansonnières, chanteuses, musiciennes, sans oublier que depuis longtemps le chant et la musique constituent des armes de revendication féministe. L’objectif du colloque consiste à mettre en lumière et à mieux faire connaître tous les espaces, les lieux, les moments ou les circonstances liés à la musique, où la présence féminine est primordiale, ainsi qu’à présenter certaines figures incontournables des musiques au féminin, en insistant sur tout le combat qu’elles ont dû ou doivent encore mener pour arriver à s’exprimer face à un milieu professionnel ou amateur encore relativement machiste.

En el contexto del 120º aniversario del nacimiento del sociólogo pernambucano, Gilberto Freyre, el Centro de Estudios Brasileños organiza el congreso internacional de ciencias sociales y humanas “La hispanidad y las presencias andalusíes y orientales en la obra de Gilberto Freyre”. El congreso hace un llamamiento a la investigación de las hipótesis ibéricas de Casa-Grande y Senzala y de la posterior formulación de la hispanotropicología.
