Colloque international numérique
Le colloque abordera le collectionnisme impressionniste sous un angle jusqu’ici peu exploré : le collectionneur et sa collection en lien avec son époque et son contexte politique, social et économique, et ce à une échelle internationale. Le collectionneur est ancré dans des réseaux d’acteurs, aussi bien privés qu’institutionnels et l'ambition de ce colloque est de contribuer à identifier ces acteurs, à mettre en lumière leurs relations et à les situer dans les mondes de l’art moderne.

“Marine Feet and Vesuvian Eyes”: The Volcanic Aesthetics of Maria Orsini Natale
Edited Collection
This volume intends to fill a gap in the critical reception of a remarkable Southern Italian woman writer. A journalist, a poet and a writer, Maria Orsini Natale (1928-2010) lived and worked at the foot of Vesuvius, and began writing at age 69, receiving several literary recognitions. Her novel, initially written as Ottocento Vesuviano, then entitled Francesca and Nunziata, and published for the first time in 1995, was also made into a 2001 film directed by Lina Wertmüller, starring Sophia Loren and Giancarlo Giannini. The book earned her a semifinalist’s place in the Strega Prize, the most prestigious Italian literary award, and features a family from Amalfi, dedicated for generations to the white art of pasta making. More than fiction, it illustrates what in Neapolitan is called a ‘cunto’, part historical account and part allegorical tale, derived from a reservoir of collective as well as personal memories.

Cultural encounters in the nineteenth century
The exhibition The Dutch in Paris, which was on show in the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam and in the Petit Palais, Paris during the fall of 2017 and spring of 2018 respectively, aimed to visualize the artistic exchange between Dutch and French artists between 1789 and 1914. As part of a larger research project, set up by the RKD – Netherlands Institute for Art History, the exhibition generated so much response that ESNA, in collaboration with the RKD and NWO, decided to organize an international conference on the subject, focusing specifically on international as well as national and local points of encounter and how they facilitated artistic exchange.

"Literary Brazil" viewed from abroad - transnational perspectives (1822 to the present day)

La revue Cahiers de Framespa lance un appel à contributions pour son numéro 2019/3, dont le dossier s'intitule « Le “Brésil littéraire” vu de l’étranger – perspectives transnationales (de 1822 à nos jours) ». Ce dossier souhaite approfondir la réflexion autour de la dimension connectée de l’histoire culturelle du Brésil contemporain à partir d’une perspective différente, à savoir la projection internationale des œuvres littéraires et intellectuelles brésiliennes, ces « lettres » que l’on qualifie volontiers de « Pátrias » au XIXe siècle.

Male Bonds in Nineteenth-Century Art
The conference will probe, challenge and expand upon the academic narrative of male homosociality through the lens of art history. It aims to establish an overview of a variety of male bonds that underpinned nineteenth-century art, and to consider the theoretical and methodological implications of the study thereof. In so doing, it seeks to build a bridge between traditional art-historical scholarship and the fields of gender and gay and lesbian studies: an interdisciplinary exchange of which the full potential for scholarship on the nineteenth century remains to be exploited.

Animal rights and the vegan movement in Germany
En février 2017, le ministère allemand de l'Environnement décidait de supprimer la viande des repas servis à ses convives. On estime que l'Allemagne compte cette même année environ 8 millions de végétariens et 1,3 millions de végans (qui refusent l'utilisation de tout produit animal). Il apparaît donc intéressant de s'interroger sur la question animale en Allemagne quatorze ans après le colloque de Marc Cluet consacré à « L'amour des animaux dans le monde germanique », et ce d'autant plus que ces questions agitent de plus en plus également la société française. Nous avons choisi une approche interdisciplinaire pour aborder ces questions – littérature, philosophie, histoire, sociologie, économie, etc. – car la question animale est par essence transversale.

The inventions of historical capital, 19th-21st century
Associée à la tradition, à la richesse de l’histoire, à la nécessaire conservation des traces du passé et à leur sauvetage, la notion de patrimoine recouvre des réalités pour le moins contrastées. Elle s’applique aux arts comme à l’industrie, allant de l’architecture à la gastronomie, de la culture à la nature, du matériel à l’immatériel. L'ambition du séminaire est de renouveler le regard porté sur les phénomènes patrimoniaux dans leur extrême diversité, en faisant de la mise au jour des stratégies qui les sous-tendent, le levier de leur mise en intelligibilité. Les objets patrimonialisés s'apparentent en effet à des inventions qui ont porté leurs créateurs, individus ou groupes, à les faire exister et reconnaître comme tels.

Jacques Delille (1738-1813), reception of his work outside France
Si l’on sait que Jacques Delille (1738-1813) fut tenu de son temps pour l’un des plus grands poètes français, sa réception à l’étranger n’a guère été étudiée. Or, elle a été massive et, à l’image d’une onde sismique dont on ne ressentirait pas les effets uniformément selon le lieu et le moment de l’observation, elle a varié dans les différents espaces nationaux à différentes périodes de leur histoire. Pour cerner cette réception internationale, le colloque « Delille hors de France » rassemblera des chercheurs d'Allemagne, de Belgique, de France, de Pologne, de Russie et de Suisse.

Male bonds in nineteenth-century art
Male Bonds is a two-day international conference that aims to explore the place of male bonds in nineteenth-century artistic practice and visual arts. The conference invites participants to reflect on the ways in which changing notions of masculinity and male sexuality impacted forms of sociability between men in the artistic scene of the long nineteenth century. In so doing, it seeks to build a bridge between traditional art-historical scholarship and the fields of gender and gay and lesbian studies.

Food at the heart of nineteenth-century art
This symposium intends to study the various and complex relations between food, the experience of eating, and nineteenth-century art. For this conference, we welcome papers that discuss how the development of the food industry and the changing notion of “taste” and social mores are reflected in nineteenth-century art in the broadest sense. Papers may concern visual arts including graphic arts in the form of illustrated advertisements and culinary literature, as well as nouveautés (objects which were designed to reflect the evolution of eating and table manners).

European sexologies, Historical and social approaches
This conference seeks to assess the current state of research in a thriving field and to create a European research network on the history of sexology. The term sexology here is understood in a broad sense (as scholarly discourse on human sexuality) and the period covered will be large, from the nineteenth century to the early 1970s. The historiography of this field, which like historiography on sexuality dates back to the 1970s and 1980s, is currently undergoing considerable change, through the influence of social and feminist history on the sciences. This has resulted in less focus on the study of paradigms and scientific pronouncements and instead privileged social and material histories of scholars and academic practices

Female travellers in the Indian Ocean - 19th century-early 20th century
This is a call for papers from the historians of the University of La Réunion, members of the Research centre for studies on Indian Ocean societies (Centre de recherches et d’études sur les Sociétés de l’océan Indien-CRESOI) and the Indian Ocean Research Unit/Societies and Spaces (Unité de recherches Océan Indien/Espaces et sociétés) with the aim of publishing a collective work on the theme of women travellers in the Indian Ocean during the late 19th and the first half of the 20th century.

Transnationale Künstlerausbildung im 19. Jahrhundert
L’équipe du projet de recherche ArtTransForm (Technische Universität Berlin / université François-Rabelais Tours, 2010-2015) organise un colloque conclusif sur le phénomène de la formation artistique transnationale au XIXe siècle. La mobilité des artistes au moment de leur formation joue un rôle crucial dans la construction biographique mais aussi dans le regard posé sur d'autres pratiques, d'autres milieux artistiques et professionnels et d'autres possibilités d'expression personnelle. Elle redessine enfin une géographie artistique différente des écoles nationales habituellement décrites dans les manuels.

20 ans du séminaire « Rapports sociaux de sexe dans le champ culturel »
En prévision du vingtième anniversaire du séminaire, une journée d'étude anniversaire est prévue le 20 mai 2015. Vingt ans représente une génération et cette journée visera à penser les questions de transmission et de patrimoine: seront ainsi revisitées les thématiques marquantes des séances des vingt dernières années lors de sessions doubles ou en binômes entre chercheuse-r-s confirmé-e-s et débutant-e-s sur ces questions et d’autres. Il s'agira de s’interroger sur la transmission, les variations temporelles, d’approches et de contenus, mais également sur les défis à venir d'un outil dont l'actualité récente a illustré récemment l'incompréhension et l'hostilité qu'il suscite.

Les voix du lecteur dans la presse française au XIXe siècle
Le XIXe siècle est assurément l’âge de la lecture. Traversé par un double mouvement d’alphabétisation et de croissance démographique, il voit le lectorat s’étendre à de nouvelles catégories de personnes : ouvriers, femmes, enfants. Dans les foyers, les cafés, les cercles et les cabinets de lecture, c’est l’imprimé à diffusion périodique qui attire à lui l’essentiel de ce nouveau public. Le journal offre une alternative majeure au livre, moins coûteuse et plus accessible. Plus immédiate, aussi, puisqu’il construit avec ses destinataires un système d’adresses et de réponses autour de l’actualité socioculturelle. Du courrier des lecteurs au droit de réponse, en passant par la causerie, le badinage, la note et la lettre ouverte, variés sont les moyens dont il dispose pour donner, réellement ou fictivement, la parole à ses lecteurs.

À l’heure de la globalisation des pratiques musiciennes et de la multiplication des échelles et réseaux de financement de la culture, ce colloque international se propose de faire retour sur l’histoire des politiques culturelles et des mobilisations de la musique dans les sociétés démocratiques, de l’apparition des premières pensées de la démocratisation jusqu’à aujourd’hui. Pourquoi et comment a-t-on cherché, depuis le XIXe siècle, à « porter la musique au peuple » ? Quelles significations et quelles formes prend cet enjeu dans le monde contemporain ?

International conference organized by the European Society for Nineteenth-Century Art, the Netherlands Institute for Art History (RKD) and The Mesdag Collection, in conjunction with the exhibition on the artist, collector and gentleman-dealer Hendrik Willem Mesdag and the Dutch Watercolour Society, at The Mesdag Collection in The Hague, the publication on this illustrious artist and his different roles within the art world, and the digital reconstruction of the art collection owned by Mesdag, carried out by the Netherlands Institute for Art History.
