The Dynamics of Ritual and Embodiment in Contemporary Religion and Spirituality
Methodological and theoretical issues
Within the framework of International Society for the Sociology of Religion 36th Conference (12 July - 15 July 2021), this panel aims to explore and discuss methodological and theoretical issues related to ethnographic research on sensory and bodily experiences in contemporary religion and spirituality. This panel invites scholars to present their contributions that include sensoriality as a central aspect of their research, either as a methodological tool (completing classical methodologies); or as a theoretical perspective to approach sensory settings and bodily (inter-)actions.

Global Prisons and Violent Extremism
Critical Theories, Case Studies, Methodologies
This international and multidisciplinary symposium is devoted to the analysis of what the fight against "violent extremism" does to the functioning of penitentiary institutions, in terms of practices, experiences and expertise. The aim is to understand the handling by the State, through the prison administration, of those whom it does consider as "enemies of the State" and "threats to national security". Thus, this colloquium aims i. to understand, in the media, political and institutional fields, the debates relating to the problematic relationship between prison and violent extremism, ii. to grasp the legal changes linked to terrorism and the effects of the "criminalization the enemy" on the prison institution, iii. to establish a state of the art and a critical analysis of the multiple modalities of violent extremism's management around the world, and to analyse the political, security, methodological and ethical conditions, challenges and obstacles related to the practice of social science research in this field of study.

Keep It Simple, Make It Fast! (KISMIF) Summer School 2020
The Keep It Simple, Make It Fast! (KISMIF) Conference 2020 will be preceded by a Summer School entitled ‘Not Just Holidays in the Sun’ on 7 July 2020 in Rivoli Municipal Theatre of Porto. The Summer School will offer an opportunity for all interested persons, including those participating in the Conference, to attend workshops directed by specialists in their fields. Our KISMIF Summer School program invites students who are interested in, or currently using, DIY cultures in their research to join us for an exciting and innovative one-day summer school program. The goal of the one-day program will be to encourage discussion and experimentation in the documentation of DIY cultures as much as it will be to encourage a new generation of DIY academics (Punk Ethnographers!) to experiment with digital cinema and performance in their research practices.

Prosopography: objects and methods
Pluridisciplinary research seminar (2019-2020)
Alors que se multiplient les travaux revendiquant une approche prosopographique, ce séminaire de recherche propose d’interroger la méthode elle-même en analysant les travaux réalisés ou en cours, sous un angle scientifique (construction de l’enquête) et méthodologique (du choix des sources à la restitution des résultats). Ces questionnements favorisent la confrontation des différentes sciences sociales qui recourent à la prosopographie, ainsi que les réflexions utiles aux recherches futures. Ce lieu de rencontre permet aussi d’approfondir le dialogue entre chercheurs et archivistes, ainsi qu’entre historiens des quatre périodes, en mettant en évidence des gisements de sources mal connus ou inédits et en revenant sur les modalités d’usage les plus fécondes. Chacune des séances est organisée de manière thématique et réunit deux à trois interventions.

From the outset Collective Memory-Work was intended to be an emancipatory method with a consciously open form. Over three decades the method has been successfully used in academic research in a variety of fields. It has been adapted and adjusted according to purposes of the applications, institutional frameworks, organisational necessities and methodological considerations, leading to further developments of the method. Narrative transformation, collective autoethnographic memory-work, mind-scripting, collective biography are some of the terms that reflect these developments. The symposium is meant to: foster an exchange about the use of CMW (its timeliness, its variations, the potential fields of application, its value in teaching, learning, research, social activism); create an opportunity to build networks for cooperation and knowledge exchange across geographical and disciplinary boundaries ; build bridges for an increased transfer of CMW into non-academic areas.

Big Data - truths and fictions
La puissance de calcul des ordinateurs, le progrès des algorithmes, les travaux en machine learning et en intelligence artificielle (IA) ouvrent de vastes possibilités devant les chercheurs en sciences humaines et sociales. Tout d’abord, la possibilité de mettre en question de telles entreprises : en quoi élargissent-elles le champ de notre compréhension ? Qu’est-ce qu’elles apportent à nos principes méthodologiques ? Quels types de vérités échappaient à notre sagacité, que les nouveaux outils d’étude nous permettent de saisir ? Et la suprême provocation - l’écriture des textes, la composition des tableaux et des mélodies – mène-t-elle à un remplacement de l’artiste par la machine, ou bien c’est l’équipe des programmeurs, artistes et critiques qui vient de produire simplement un nouveau média numérique, l’art de la « machine intelligente » ?

"Histinéraires": seminar looking at oral collections and their restitution

A travers la collecte et l’étude des « Mémoires de synthèse des activités scientifiques » (MSAS) des habilitations à diriger des recherches soutenues (HDR) en histoire depuis le début des années 1990, le projet « La fabrique de l’histoire telle qu’elle se raconte », de son acronyme HISTINÉRAIRES, prend pour objet le récit que les historiens font d’eux-mêmes, comment ils racontent leur parcours d’historien, académique comme intellectuel. Ces écrits ont été enrichis par une série d’entretiens menés auprès d’une quarantaine de chercheur.e.s qui se sont prêté.e.s au jeu de l’histoire orale. Si les écrits MSAS ont bénéficié d’un logiciel d’analyse textuel spécifique permettant de repérer etde classer différents éléments, les récits de vie ou de parcours professionnels enregistrés ont été, eux, archivés et organisés dans une phonothèque. Leur écoute offre un nouveau corpus de recherche qui reste à exploiter.

Prisons, Prisoners and Prison Records in Historical Perspective
The rise of the prison as an institution of mass incarceration for offenders has for long fascinated researchers. In part, this is due to the unusually detailed nature of most prison records. The wide availability of somewhat similar sources across diverse European and European-derived societies provides criminologists, social and economic historians, demographers and other social scientists with rich collections of personal information that have been analysed intensively since the 1970s. The increasing power of software and hardware and the accumulation of very large quantities of prison data, some of it linked to other sources, offers challenges and opportunities for researchers today. The workshop responds to the challenge of harnessing criminal justice records by bringing together scholars in different disciplines and countries to share information about their sources, methodologies of classification and analysis, and to reconceptualize research paradigms.

Usages de la cartographie en sciences sociales
La cartographie est aujourd’hui investie par des champs d’études autres que la géographie, ce qui rend nécessaire la création d’espaces de dialogue entre disciplines par le partage de méthodes proches d’enquête ou d’analyse. Cette journée doctorale propose d’analyser les usages et les apports de la cartographie pour les sciences sociales à travers des cas d’études spécifiques et des méthodes innovantes de son utilisation. Dans une perspective méthodologique, l’usage et les choix de représentations, les méthodes utilisées (logiciels de SIG, cartographie proportionnelle, schéma etc.) ainsi que la distinction entre cartographie qualitative et quantitative posent question. Qu’apporte la représentation cartographique à la recherche en sciences sociales ? L’objectif de cette journée n’est pas de présenter techniquement les logiciels, mais de comprendre les enjeux du recours à la cartographie en sciences sociales, de la mise en œuvre des terrains à la construction de discours sur l’espace. Cet appel à communication s’adresse aux doctorant(e)s de toute discipline (anthropologie, histoire, géographie, sociologie, économie, etc.) qui traitent de ces questions dans leur recherche.

Ethics and social engagement of researchers: questioning research practices in the social sciences and humanities
Often, starting a new research project or fieldwork begins with a self-reflective survey by the researcher of their own research practices. The URMIS graduate symposium, which is held once a year at Paris Diderot University or the University of Nice, France, offers to Ph.D students, senior Ph.D candidates and post-doctoral fellows in Anthropology, Sociology, History, Geography, and Ethnic Studies, an opportunity to present their reflections on methodological and ethical questions about research practices in their own fields. For the 2018 edition, which will take place at the University of Nice, we invite submissions on researchers’ attitudes to social and political engagement and on the ethics of research. The symposium will allow researchers to discuss their past or present research projects in the light of such questions, which are too often left unaddressed and remain hidden in our publications.

La question des dynamiques temporelles des systèmes sociaux est centrale aussi bien pour la science des réseaux complexes que pour les sciences sociales. Cette journée d’études vise à rassembler des chercheurs de tous les horizons disciplinaires (sciences physiques, mathématiques, informatique, histoire, sociologie…), pour échanger sur les avancées récentes en analyse des réseaux et des trajectoires. Comment les réseaux sociaux se transforment-ils ? Quelles relations entre trajectoires individuelles et évolutions des structures sociales ? Les intervenant·e·s présenteront et discuteront des recherches en cours qui mettent ces questions à l’épreuve d’un panel diversifié de sources de données empiriques, depuis les grandes enquêtes statistiques internationales jusqu’aux données massives du Web, en passant par des corpus de données historiques issus de traitements quantitatifs d’archives.

Health and images - located production, shared knowledge
L’image occupe une place importante dans le paysage social : vecteur d’informations, de réactions, elle questionne également le domaine scientifique. Depuis plusieurs années se développent des espaces de réflexions sur les images et leurs utilisations dans le travail de recherche. L'atelier scientifique que nous proposons s'inscrit dans cette perspective. À partir de récits d'enquêtes et en s'appuyant sur les photos qui en sont issues, l'objectif de cette demi-journée sera d'interroger, dans une approche pluridisciplinaire, les dimensions méthodologiques et éthiques de l'enquête photographique dans des recherches qui s'inscrivent dans le champ de la santé.
