Les présentations des participants inviteront à réfléchir à l’intersection entre l’intégration des minorités au sein de la société britannique sous le prisme de l’art, qu’ils soient populaires ou impulsés par les pouvoirs publics et à nous interroger sur l’analyse filmique des minorités en compagnie de spécialistes tels que Rosalind Galt et Karl Schoonover. Nous nous efforcerons de comprendre dans quelle mesure la culture et les arts peuvent servir un processus social d’intégration et d’inclusion des minorités, ou au contraire essentialisent les différences de l’autre. Les propositions pourront éventuellement s’intéresser aux dimensions culturelles, socio-économiques et politiques de cette intersection complexe.

English journeys past and present, explorations of the condition of England
The conference will address the following hypothesis: the illustration of a certain way of being English, of a specific English way of inhabiting and making sense of the world, were given definition and cultural force through a series of writings which record the impressions of things seen in the course of a journey dedicated to the exploration of a territory, whether the land of England in its national extension or the more local territory of a particular community. The organizers are calling for papers which will examine a corpus of writing proposing a first-person observations of a condition of England at various moments in the history of a territory.

Stages of Utopia and Dissent, 50 years on...
15 May 1968: the Odeon theatre in Paris is occupied by students and becomes the insurgent headquarters where every night militants recount the days' action in occupied factories to an audience of people camping in the auditorium. Youth rebellion was never as mythologised as that of the French students’ fight against institutional oppression. The effects were felt across the Channel, too – but the nature of those effects was, and remains, disputed. 50 years on… where are we? What remains of autogestion and emancipatory education? What remains of theatre inventiveness and sedition? What remains of a need for participatory audiences? What remains of utopia and dissent?

Radiohead’s musical, cultural, and political legacies
Following a symposium held at Rennes 2 University last may, further contributions (in English or French) are now sought in order to publish a wide-ranging, peer-reviewed collection of articles appraising OK Computer’s musical, cultural and political legacy twenty years after its release. The aim of this publication is to bring together contributions from scholars who wish to confront Radiohead’s work with their own disciplinary methodologies, including (but not limited to) musicology, sociology, art history, political science, literature, cultural studies or even economics.

Dissonance, eclecticism and the fusion of genres in modern and contemporary English-speaking culture
L’objet de cette journée d’études est d’interroger les possibilités ouvertes par la sociologie culturelle - notamment les concepts d'omnivorisme, d'éclectisme, de dissonance - aux autres disciplines, notamment celles (civilisation, littérature, histoire) traditionnellement attachées à des aires culturelles (anglophone notamment) et plus ouvertes au syncrétisme théorique que la sociologie. La problématique du mélange des genres constitue-elle une approche permettant d’appréhender la culture dans son ensemble ? C’est ce que nous nous proposons de déplier pendant cette journée d’études, en s’attachant à la fois au point de vue des consommateurs, des créateurs et des créations culturelles.

"OK Computer", twenty years on: Radiohead’s musical, cultural, and political legacies
As a band who has garnered critical and commercial success without forsaking their taste for musical experimentation and subversive, yet poetic, lyrics, Radiohead offer multiple facets to their listeners and to popular music scholars alike. Nevertheless, only a handful of academic studies have, to this day, been devoted their work, including The Music and Art of Radiohead (Tate, 2005).

Music criticism in the Anglophone world
What are the forms, genres, and styles of music criticism? Who writes music criticism? What role have musicians and composers played (and continue to play) in music criticism? And what is the role of non-musician writers? And how do cultural institutions, such as universities, newspapers, specialized or non-specialized magazines, figure in music criticism, as opposed to non-institutional channels? What does “classical” music criticism and popular music criticism have in common? How, conversely, do they differ? These are some of the questions that will be debated in this international conference, the last in a series of colloquiums that were initiated in 2013 on various aspects of music criticism. Twelve papers—seven in English, five in French—will be presented in the three sessions of this conference, with participants from Belgium, Britain, France, Germany, and the United States.

The circulation of popular culture between Ireland and the USA (18th-21st centuries)
Dans le système de culture mondialisée qui caractérise les sociétés contemporaines, l'organisation d'un colloque international invite à concentrer l’attention sur un cas d’étude, la circulation des diverses formes de culture populaire entre Irlande et États-Unis. L’ancienneté, la constance et de l’intensité des échanges culturels entre les deux nations sont en effet largement antérieurs à la mondialisation culturelle ultra-contemporaine. Cette singularité inscrite dans la longue durée permet de mettre en perspective les phénomènes contemporains tout en les interrogeant.

Historical, sociological and musicological approaches
Il s'agit d'une journée d'études organisée par le département de musique de l'université d'Evry-val-d'Essonne et le laboratoire de recherche RASM (Recherche art spectacle musique). La matinée sera consacrée à l’étude du cadre historique et social des années 1960 en Grande-Bretagne ; l’après-midi, les interventions porteront sur les aspects spécifiquement musicaux (influences, techniques d’enregistrement et de composition, etc.). Des prestations musicales des étudiants du département de musique alterneront avec les communications des intervenants.

The inaugural international conference of the French Society of Modernist Studies
The aim of this two-day conference is to foster discussion on communities in the modernist period. As discursive constructs and historical practices, communities constitute a privileged phenomenon from which to understand the political and ethical regime of modernist texts, as well as the actual forms of collective experience in which writers and readers were involved. More than a decade after Jessica Berman’s landmark work on "the politics of community" in modernist fiction, we seek to explore the various ways in which communities were configured across genres and artistic media, but also to acknowledge the grounds of their historical and cultural specificity. We hope that this will lead us to distinguish various versions of the communal, from the ideal to the empirical, from the utopian to the everyday, from consensus to dissensus.

Problématiques britanniques
Le groupe d'études interdisciplinaires sur les arts britanniques, CIRHAC, Paris 1 (Geiab.org) ouvre à la rentrée 2009 un séminaire portant sur les relations entre institutions, artistes et publics en Grande-Bretagne, sous la forme d’un rendez-vous mensuel en partenariat avec l'Université de Paris Ouest-Nanterre. Nous inviterons des spécialistes académiques mais également des personnalités du monde de l’art, qu’ils soient galeristes ou critiques, ou commissaires. Nous proposerons deux formats, l’intervention (45mn-1h) suivie d’une table ronde, ou l’entretien, auquel pourrait également participer l’audience présente. -

Le thème « Passeurs » offre l'opportunité d'explorer la dynamique de la transmission culturelle, littéraire et linguistique dans le domaine de l'anglistique. Le passeur est à la fois un guide et un intermédiaire, entre deux rives ou deux pays, deux cultures, deux générations ou deux langues. Figure mythologique ou biblique traditionnelle, située dans l’entre-deux de l’enfer et du paradis, du monde des vivants et du royaume des morts, il occupe dès son origine un large territoire symbolique et investit l’imaginaire collectif grâce à son pouvoir de sceller le destin des âmes.
