LGBTI and Queer Art, Culture and Activism

In France, a few years after the law authorizing same-sex marriage, LGBTQ associations are now facing new struggles, fighting for access to assisted procreation or the creation of a communal archive center. Drawing on these dynamics, this conference aims at interrogating the bonds between LGBTQ forms of arts, cultures and activisms. We look forward to opening a space for academics and grassroots activists, whether they be engaged in institutional collectives or not, to exchange, reflect and dialogue. LGBTQ-related topics appear to be often overlooked in French research networks. We aim to make it more visible and richer, and make it dialogue with local, national and international networks of academics and activists. The « LGBTI and Queer Art, Culture and Activism » online conference is jointly organised by the Université de Lorraine and its research centres (2L2S and CREM), with the support of the French ministry of culture (DRAC Grand-Est), and the LGBTIQ centre Couleurs Gaies.

Narrative forms and co-production in Arab cinemas

Norms, constraints, and margins of freedom

Film industry in the Arab world remains generally underdeveloped. Arab countries still depend on international film support funds, mainly European. This puts Arab producers, scriptwriters and filmmakers in a subaltern position in relation to European producers and funders, whose expectations in terms of content as well as narrative and aesthetic forms end up strongly impacting the film creation process. On the other hand, margins of freedom and resistance can be created within this system. This edition of Regards aims at addressing the complex relation between Arab cinemas and international film support funds.

“Marine Feet and Vesuvian Eyes”: The Volcanic Aesthetics of Maria Orsini Natale

This volume intends to fill a gap in the critical reception of a remarkable Southern Italian woman writer. A journalist, a poet and a writer, Maria Orsini Natale (1928-2010) lived and worked at the foot of Vesuvius, and began writing at age 69, receiving several literary recognitions. Her novel, initially written as Ottocento Vesuviano, then entitled Francesca and Nunziata, and published for the first time in 1995, was also made into a 2001 film directed by Lina Wertmüller, starring Sophia Loren and Giancarlo Giannini. The book earned her a semifinalist’s place in the Strega Prize, the most prestigious Italian literary award, and features a family from Amalfi, dedicated for generations to the white art of pasta making. More than fiction, it illustrates what in Neapolitan is called a ‘cunto’, part historical account and part allegorical tale, derived from a reservoir of collective as well as personal memories.

La relevancia actual de los movimientos de mujeres y demandas en torno a sus derechos sociales, políticos, legales y reproductivos han marcado un derrotero multívoco en los debates contemporáneos de las sociedades de la región andina. Varias propuestas de sectores sociales vinculados a la lucha histórica de los movimientos de mujeres han puesto sobre el mesa la necesidad de reflexionar sobre cómo las demandas femeninas han llegado y situado en la palestra pública actual. Asimismo, la búsqueda de pasados históricos y de genealogías feministas que disputan discursos y perspectivas en la opinión pública evidencian la necesidad de fomentar análisis y producciones científicas sobre las demandas políticas y sociales de los movimientos de mujeres a través del tiempo. Ante este horizonte, nos planteamos desde la producción académica establecer correspondencias y desafíos con contribuciones críticas que han buscado visibilizar las historias, luchas y contribuciones de las mujeres en la vida social.

La matinée de cette journée d'études sera consacrée à une approche de la contre-culture à travers des mouvements féministes radicaux (mouvement d’occupation en Allemagne et en Espagne) ou armés (groupes d’action directe en France, Allemagne, Italie) alors que l’après-midi abordera les contre-cultures à partir des industries underground (mode, musique punk, photo, etc.). Comme pour toutes les journées organisées dans le cadre du séminaire « Femmes et engagement » depuis 2013, nous invitons des chercheur·e·s de différentes disciplines et sur des aires géographiques plurielles, le but étant de privilégier la dimension comparée.

Après un premier volet sur la chanson de lutte, ce deuxième volet de la thématique : « Opera contro: la chanson », sera consacré à la chanson « hors la loi ». La journée prévoit deux sections : la matinée sur les chansons qui parlent des hors-la-loi: chants de prison, chansons de la pègre, chansons sur la mafia entre autres ; l'après-midi sera centrée sur l'étude de la chanson elle-même « hors-la-loi » : chants féministes ou anarchistes et chansons censurées pour des raisons « morales » ou politiques.

Literary and iconographic representations of the nation

Depuis une dizaine d’années les études sur le genre et les masculinités gagnent de la place dans le paysage académique français grâce aux nouvelles approches théoriques d’analyse culturelle venues particulièrement des pays anglophones (Butler, Connell, etc.), et ce malgré l’opposition de plus en plus criante de certains groupes religieux et d’une partie de la société civile (La Manif pour Tous, Civitas, Sens commun) qui dénoncent une manipulation idéologique de la part des universitaires dans le but de défaire le genre organisant les modes de fonctionnement sociaux et les rapports de domination. Dans ce contexte de forte remise en cause des luttes pour l’égalité de genre et pour les droits des personnes LGBTIQ, il importe de continuer les réflexions engagées lors de la journée d’études « Masculinités hispaniques : déviances et résistances dans la littérature hispanophone contemporaine » (octobre 2016) à partir d’une nouvelle perspective d’analyse : les rapports étroits entre masculinité et nation.

Male Bonds in Nineteenth-Century Art

The conference will probe, challenge and expand upon the academic narrative of male homosociality through the lens of art history. It aims to establish an overview of a variety of male bonds that underpinned nineteenth-century art, and to consider the theoretical and methodological implications of the study thereof. In so doing, it seeks to build a bridge between traditional art-historical scholarship and the fields of gender and gay and lesbian studies: an interdisciplinary exchange of which the full potential for scholarship on the nineteenth century remains to be exploited.

Sexologies and theories of sexuality - translation, appropriation, problematisation, medicalisation

Le colloque se propose d’examiner l’histoire des conceptions de la sexualité qui ont été mobilisées – explicitement ou implicitement – dans les différentes constructions sexologiques depuis le dix-neuvième siècle jusqu’aux temps présents. Le champ des connaissances, des théories et des pratiques – le dispositif – qui sont désignées sous le terme de « sexologie » renvoie à des conceptions spécifiques de la sexualité. La sexologie constitue une forme de réponse sociale – et surtout médicale, psychologique, psychiatrique et parfois légale – aux questions posées par les humains à propos de « leur sexualité ». Et à leur tour, les savoirs élaborés par la sexologie influencent la formulation des questions que se posent les personnes sur « leur sexualité ».

Masculine bodies - literary and iconographic representations of the nation

Les origines de la conscience nationale et les attributs qui lui ont été associés s’avèrent inséparables des caractérisations du corps masculin. En effet, la virilité a été utilisée de manière très productive dans les descriptions idéales de la nation et de ses représentants. Plus récemment, Tod W. Reeser (2010) a analysé que dans le discours de la nation et de la masculinité, ces caractérisations sont « imaginées, limitées et démarquées ». Ce phénomène apparaît par exemple dans les représentations viriles de l’armée comme corps défensif de la nation ou, au contraire, dans les traits féminins ou efféminés attribués à l’ennemi. Selon ce spécialiste, « la masculinité peut aider à faire apparaître la nationalité comme naturelle ». Ainsi, la naturalisation de la nation et celle du corps masculin s’insèrent au sein d’un seul et même processus discursif.

In 1989, a survey of French cultural taste revealed that Serge Gainsbourg was both one of the most popular singers and yet a near outcast in his native country. When he died, two years later, President Mitterrand called him “our Baudelaire, our Apollinaire,” claiming he had “elevated chanson to the level of art.” But he might just as well have acknowledged Gainsbourg as the first artist to top the British charts with a single in a foreign language. With the hindsight of almost thirty years, one thing is, in any case, certain: sampled by Beck, De La Soul, Massive Attack and Fatboy Slim, remixed by Howie B. and David Holmes, translated by Mick Harvey and covered by Iggy Pop, Donna Summer, Portishead, Madeleine Peyroux, the Pet Shop Boys and Franz Ferdinand, “the man with the cabbage head” remains the Francophone songwriter whose contribution to the international appeal of French popular music has been the most significant in the post-war era.

The conference invites participants to reflect on the ways in which changing notions of masculinity and male sexuality impacted forms of sociability between men in the artistic scene of the long nineteenth century. In so doing, it seeks to build a bridge between traditional art-historical scholarship and the fields of gender and gay and lesbian studies.

Dans ce numéro, nous entendons « théâtre de boulevard » dans un sens large, en prenant en considération les spectacles inscrits dans cette catégorie ou qui s’en réclament ainsi que les lieux où ces spectacles sont joués. Les études pourront porter sur tous les genres et les formes de spectacles. Christophe Charle l’indique en introduction de son ouvrage Théâtres en capitales, lorsqu’il s’attache à ce type d’étude, le/la chercheur-se doit prêter attention à ne pas s’appuyer seulement sur les œuvres canoniques, à ne pas hiérarchiser les œuvres et à ne pas oublier sa propre culture scolaire, pour prendre en compte les spectacles, les auteur.e.s mais aussi les comédien.ne.s qui les jouent, les salles où elles sont présentées, le type de spectateur-trices auxquel.le.s ces spectacles s’adressent, par qui elles sont commandées, ainsi que les succès ou les échecs des pièces étudiées. Pour y parvenir, l’approche se veut pluridisciplinaire, ouverte aux sciences humaines et sociales. Les propositions issues des études théâtrales, de l’histoire, des sciences sociales, des études sur le genre seront les bienvenues. La période proposée s’étend des années 1960 à nos jours, sans restriction d’aire géographique.

“Medicalized” Childbirth as a Public Problem

Obstetrical knowledge, technologies and practices have dramatically transformed women’s reproductive experiences worldwide. Medicalization of childbirth was accelerated in the XX^th century by the displacement of childbirth from home to the hospital, and by the generalization of surgical techniques and pharmaceutical products. Medical interventionism took multiple, situated forms. Relying on cross-cultural investigations and field data from diverse national contexts (France, USA, Italy, Brazil, Senegal, Turkey, Switzerland, Canada…), this international workshop investigates how “technological” birth came into being, and how it is produced, problematized, framed, and negotiated in the XXI^st century.

European sexologies, Historical and social approaches

This conference seeks to assess the current state of research in a thriving field and to create a European research network on the history of sexology. The term sexology here is understood in a broad sense (as scholarly discourse on human sexuality) and the period covered will be large, from the nineteenth century to the early 1970s. The historiography of this field, which like historiography on sexuality dates back to the 1970s and 1980s, is currently undergoing considerable change, through the influence of social and feminist history on the sciences. This has resulted in less focus on the study of paradigms and scientific pronouncements and instead privileged social and material histories of scholars and academic practices

This is a call for papers from the historians of the University of La Réunion, members of the Research centre for studies on Indian Ocean societies (Centre de recherches et d’études sur les Sociétés de l’océan Indien-CRESOI) and the Indian Ocean Research Unit/Societies and Spaces (Unité de recherches Océan Indien/Espaces et sociétés) with the aim of publishing a collective work on the theme of women travellers in the Indian Ocean during the late 19^thand the first half of the 20^th century.
