LGBTQIA+ sexualities: subjectivities, movements, languages
LGBTQIA+ studies for contemporary history, having produced a vast amount of researches, are still questioning history and historiography: how can LGBTQIA+ history be written? Does it merely overlap with the history of LGBTQIA+ subjectivities or does it exceed the boundaries of the LGBTQIA+ community? Does it challenge the historical imagination in terms of sources, archives, political and disciplinary boundaries, gender categories? Diacronie. Studi di Storia Contemporanea is looking for contributions aimed at investigating these issues.

Femicide in France in the 19th century: social-history, key issues and representations
Ce colloque visera à étudier l’évolution du féminicide, de ses représentations et de leurs variations, sur la période du long XIXe siècle (1789-1914), de la Révolution française, où se met en place un nouveau système juridique, à la veille de la Grande Guerre, laquelle reconfigure les relations genrées et fait émerger un nouveau rapport à la violence. Il paraît aujourd'hui essentiel d'interroger les constructions du XIXe siècle pour saisir l'ancrage historique des mécanismes à l'œuvre dans notre rapport aux féminicides. Qu'est ce qui au XIXe siècle empêche la conceptualisation du féminicide comme crime spécifique ? Pourquoi avons-nous encore tant de réticences à catégoriser les meurtres de femmes au motif du sexe et du genre ? Puisque chaque pays a ses spécificités juridiques et culturelles, nous limiterons notre étude à la France.

Trans Identities in the French media
Abstracts are welcome for an edited volume that will address the question of the representations of trans identities in the French media. This volume aims more specifically at observing how trans identities have been portrayed in the past decades (from the 1990s’ to the present time). Possible topics include (but are not limited to)(a) the evolution of the representation of trans identities in news coverage, (b) transgender characters in films and series, (c) pitfalls and biases regarding the way trans identities are portrayed in the French media, and/or (d) the analysis of a specific body of work.

Artist-teachers in the 20th century: transmission through the prism of genre
L’historiographie existante sur l’enseignement artistique au XXe siècle s’intéresse peu au cas particulier des artistes femmes. Elle se concentre principalement sur quelques établissements qui, à l’image du Bauhaus, font rupture et s’affirment comme des lieux de l’avant-garde, laissant dans l’ombre la plus grande part des écoles, le rythme de leurs évolutions et les luttes discrètes qui s’y jouent. Plus généralement, le contenu des cours, les dynamiques de transmission et le fonctionnement des groupes demeurent eux aussi méconnus. Le manque de sources constitue l’une des difficultés majeures auxquelles se heurte la recherche pour envisager les méthodes d’enseignement. Il en va de même pour la féminisation des groupes et la manière dont elle modifie les rapports de force, de projection, ainsi que l’imaginaire et les récits mis en œuvre dans l’enseignement.

LGBTI and Queer Art, Culture and Activism
In France, a few years after the law authorizing same-sex marriage, LGBTQ associations are now facing new struggles, fighting for access to assisted procreation or the creation of a communal archive center. Drawing on these dynamics, this conference aims at interrogating the bonds between LGBTQ forms of arts, cultures and activisms. We look forward to opening a space for academics and grassroots activists, whether they be engaged in institutional collectives or not, to exchange, reflect and dialogue. LGBTQ-related topics appear to be often overlooked in French research networks. We aim to make it more visible and richer, and make it dialogue with local, national and international networks of academics and activists. The « LGBTI and Queer Art, Culture and Activism » online conference is jointly organised by the Université de Lorraine and its research centres (2L2S and CREM), with the support of the French ministry of culture (DRAC Grand-Est), and the LGBTIQ centre Couleurs Gaies.

"All Alone" in East-Central Europe: Reinventing the Orphan from the Fascist to the Socialist Era
International PhD Contract 2020-2023
Full-time, 36-month-long international PhD contract at Sorbonne University (PhD program IV) within the research centre Eur'ORBEM and in partnership with the French Research Centre in Social Sciences (CEFRES) in Prague, from 1 October 2020, under the supervision of Clara Royer. The PhD thesis may be written in French or in English. PhD propositions should focus on the discourses and practices surrounding the orphan condition in literature and/or visual arts (cinema, photography, graphic arts and so forth) in the wake of the violence and demographic upheavals that characterized 20th century East-Central Europe. Because of its interdisciplinary scope, applicants with a background in social history, literary studies and/or visual arts specialized in one or several countries of East-Central Europe may apply.

Spectacular strangeness - the culture shock of the living arts today
Vers un dépaysement des arts vivants actuels
L’objectif de ces journées d’étude sera de faire vivre une recherche encore marginale sur des objets d’étude qui le sont tout autant. Nous nous interrogerons sur ce que produisent ces « bizarreries spectaculaires » ainsi que sur leur impact dans les arts vivants. À la manière d’un cabinet de curiosités,nous tenterons de constituer une sorte de collection d’objets spectaculaires bizarres que nous étudierons ensuite afin d’en comprendre les enjeux. Le but n’est donc pas de créer une taxinomie mais plutôt d’apprendre à regarder l’étrange et de tenter de construire des outils adaptés pour mieux l’analyser. Voici quelques questions laissées en suspens qui pourront être développées durant les communications : Pourquoi et comment regarder une « bizarrerie spectaculaire » ? Quels outils et/ou méthodes utiliser pour mieux comprendre les enjeux de ces formes atypiques ? D’où viennent-elles, ont-elles des antécédents et si oui, lesquels ? Dans quelles mesures bouleversent-elles les codes de la représentation scénique ? Que nous révèlent-elles sur l’état actuel des arts du spectacle et par quels moyens les réenchantent-t-elles ?

Women behind the camera in family films
La journée d’études « Tuer les pères : Femmes derrière la caméra dans les films de famille » propose une réflexion collective autour des images d’amateur tournées en famille. En affirmant et en perpétuant l’institution familiale dans sa configuration patriarcale, nucléaire et hétérosexuelle, le film de famille a contribué à reproduire les codes et les hiérarchies de genre et de sexualité de la société bourgeoise. En concevant le cinéma d’amateur comme une « technologie de genre », les communications porteront sur les images réalisées par des femmes-amatrices afin de découvrir et décortiquer leur propre « regard familial ».

Norms, constraints, and margins of freedom
Film industry in the Arab world remains generally underdeveloped. Arab countries still depend on international film support funds, mainly European. This puts Arab producers, scriptwriters and filmmakers in a subaltern position in relation to European producers and funders, whose expectations in terms of content as well as narrative and aesthetic forms end up strongly impacting the film creation process. On the other hand, margins of freedom and resistance can be created within this system. This edition of Regards aims at addressing the complex relation between Arab cinemas and international film support funds.

“Marine Feet and Vesuvian Eyes”: The Volcanic Aesthetics of Maria Orsini Natale
Edited Collection
This volume intends to fill a gap in the critical reception of a remarkable Southern Italian woman writer. A journalist, a poet and a writer, Maria Orsini Natale (1928-2010) lived and worked at the foot of Vesuvius, and began writing at age 69, receiving several literary recognitions. Her novel, initially written as Ottocento Vesuviano, then entitled Francesca and Nunziata, and published for the first time in 1995, was also made into a 2001 film directed by Lina Wertmüller, starring Sophia Loren and Giancarlo Giannini. The book earned her a semifinalist’s place in the Strega Prize, the most prestigious Italian literary award, and features a family from Amalfi, dedicated for generations to the white art of pasta making. More than fiction, it illustrates what in Neapolitan is called a ‘cunto’, part historical account and part allegorical tale, derived from a reservoir of collective as well as personal memories.

Femininity and masculinity in Spanish series
Cultural industries and assignations of gender
La fiction sérielle en Espagne a déjà une longue histoire. Elle commence dans la deuxième moitié du XIXe siècle avec les romans feuilletons publiés dans la presse, dont le lectorat était aussi bien masculin que féminin. Les premières fictions sérielles espagnoles datent de la fin des années 1950 et leur identité est étroitement liée à ce contexte historique. TVE, la télévision nationale franquiste, est fondée en 1956 ; elle apparaît très vite au régime comme un formidable outil de propagande. Ainsi, Jaime de Armiñan crée les séries Galería de maridos en 1959 puis, devant le succès de cette première galerie de portraits de jeunes mariés, Galería de esposas en 1960 qui met en scène des modèles féminins en accord avec une idéologie national-catholique qui promeut la domesticité (modèle de « el ángel del hogar », ou la fée du logis).

Killing the fathers: Women behind the camera on home movies
The Study day « Killing the fathers : Women behind the camera on home movies » proposes a collective reflection on amateur images produced by the family. By affirming and perpetuating the family institution in its patriarchal, nuclear and heterosexual configuration, the home movie has thus contributed to reproduce the bourgeois codes and hierarchies of gender and sexuality. By conceiving amateur cinema as a “technology of gender” (De Lauretis, 1987), we welcome papers on amateur images made by women to uncover and analyse their own “familial gaze”.

Heritage and memorial construction of the 1969 riots
À l’occasion du cinquantenaire des émeutes de Stonewall (New York, juin 1969), ce colloque se propose d’étudier l’héritage d’un événement majeur dans la constitution des mouvements LGBTQ aux États-Unis et dans le reste du monde. Il a pour but d’interroger les processus de patrimonialisation et de mémorialisation, ainsi que l’héritage politique et les représentations culturelles et militantes de Stonewall.En un demi-siècle, ces émeutes ont acquis aux États-Unis une dimension symbolique forte, une reconnaissance institutionnelle grandissante et font désormais partie du récit national. Ce colloque a pour objectif d’étudier quelles conceptions et quelles représentations de l’événement sous-tendent les processus de consécration mémorielle dont il fait l’objet, mais aussi de demander quelle histoire on lui fait raconter.
