  Repenser l'histoire de la Rust Belt depuis 1945

  S’étendant de l’ouest de l’État de New York à l’est de l’Iowa, cette région fut jusqu’au milieu du XXème siècle le cœur manufacturier et industriel du pays. Des Grandes Migrations qui ont radicalement transformé son tissu démographique à l’essoufflement de son modèle économique, jusqu’aux grandes luttes ouvrières et au mouvement pour les droits civiques. À travers les recherches en cours ou récemment abouties de doctorant.e.s et jeunes docteur.e.s américanistes issu.e.s de disciplines variées (histoire, sociologie, science politique, géographie), il s’agira d'ouvrir de nouvelles perspectives sur l'histoire de la Rust Belt, ainsi que de mettre en avant les espaces et les acteurs trop souvent relégués aux marges de l'histoire de cette région, mais qui ont tout autant contribué à façonner la Rust Belt d’aujourd’hui.

  The Black Metropolis, between past and future

  Race, urban planning and African-American culture in Chicago

  The colloquium will celebrate the centenary of the “Great Migration” and explore the social and cultural life of Chicago South Side and West Side from the end of the Thirties, which were marked by the cultural zenith of Bronzeville neighborhood and a series of measures for the Black community inspired by the New Deal, to the present, which is characterized by numerous private and public initiatives in favor of an urban renewal. This international and multidisciplinary colloquium seeks to reevaluate the contribution of the South Side and the West Side to the definition and evolution of the African-American identity from the beginning of the XX^th Century until the contemporary moment.
