  Revisiting the Influenza Pandemic of 1918-1919

  Interdisciplinary conference signaling the centennial of the 1918-19 influenza pandemic, the worst epidemic crisis on record in Portuguese and world history. The papers to be presented review the available knowledge on the subject, explore new data and point out the open questions regarding a historic event that caused dramatic effects on a global scale.

  Gender and contraception: what kind of (r)evolutions?

  This event aims to explore the “(r)evolutions” that the diffusion of contraception in the world has generated. It also intends to acknowledge the renewal of research on contraception and abortion through the integration of a gender perspective. The material and legal access to methods and knowledge on fertility control might have led to changes in power relations in different social spheres. Considering contraception today leads us to, among other things, questioning representations of procreative autonomy and gender equality.

  L’auto-fabrication des sociétés

  Population, politiques sociales, santé

  Ce séminaire collectif réunit l’équipe ESOPP (http://esopp.ehess.fr/), liée au Centre de recherches historiques. Il explore les problématiques nouvelles de l’histoire des populations : prise en compte du caractère « construit » de la population, articulation entre étude des pratiques, des savoirs et des institutions, relecture, par le biais des objets démographiques (mortalité, migrations, familles) de l’histoire des politiques sociales, de l’hygiène publique ou de l’environnement. C’est toute la question de la fabrication et de la régulation des sociétés par elles-mêmes qui est posée. L'approche qui prête une attention particulière aux limites de l’action étatique : compétition avec d’autres formes institutionnelles, qu’elles opèrent à d’autres échelles (municipalités ou organismes supranationaux), ou qu’elles soient de nature privée (entreprises, associations, églises, etc.) ; difficulté à influencer et objectiver les normes et les mœurs.
