  Populism: Theoretical Confusion, Contexts of proliferation and Comparative Experiences

  Although most researchers unanimously agreed on the modernity of populism, this should in no way discourage us from further examining the implications of this phenomenon and its origins in ancient history. The search for the historical roots of populism, that some relate to early times, is only an attempt to establish its origin. However, the subsequent transformations of populism in meaning and practice have made it difficult to discern its limits. Apparently, this critical approach seems to be inaccessible due to many considerations, including the transformations of populism in terms of concept and practice to the point of almost losing its first forms.  According to this approach, it is more likely that real beginnings of populism coincided with the emergence of modern democracy showing signs of deficiency.

  Pontmain, the Marian apparition on January 17, 1871: texts, contexts, interpretations

  After being defeated by Prussian troops at the Battle of Le Mans, elements of the French Army retreat to the east of the department of Mayenne on January 13, 1871. Scuffles ensue in many spots, to the gate outside Laval. The advance of Prussian troops on the territory, while Paris has been under siege for four months, preoccupies the inhabitants of Mayenne.On January 17, the Virgin Mary appears to children of Pontmain, and only to them. The villagers pray and move from anguish to joy and hope.January 2021 marks the 150th anniversary of these military events and this apparition.

  1956-1958: A revolutionary period that changed Africa (and the world)

  The objective of this panel is to compare the various social mobilizations that took place in Africa during the years 1956-1958 and which arguably constitute a historical watershed. The main aim of the panel is not the making of an abstract comparative analysis, but the analysis, based on the testimonial material collected, of how the memory of these events has been structured over time. Moreover, we are interested in understanding what the impacts of these social movements were on the structuring of states and what continuities can be found between the mobilizations of that period and the ary social mobilizations that have shaken the continent in the last ten years, from the ‘Arab Spring’ of 2011 onwards.

  How are norms challenged by disabilities?

  This 9^th conference aims to discuss the construction of normality and, more broadly, the system of thought that structures our societies in which being “able” is the norm in the sense of both the most widespread and the most desirable situation. The aim of this critical perspective is therefore to highlight how our societies are structured in relation to the notion of the able individual. While the recent call to build inclusive societies would appear to herald a radical turning point, what is the reality? Have we truly finished with representations of disability that tend towards the negative, the defective or even the tragic? To what extend are the “heroized” figures of disability, omnipresent in the public space, perpetrating the representation of disability as a deviation from the norm?

S’appuyant sur ces études, dans le contexte d'inquiétudes écologiques croissantes, divers courants critiques, alternatifs ou militants entendent développer des perspectives opposées à celles de la loi de la jungle et de la consommation destructrice. Cet appel à contribution porte sur ces expériences et modes de vie conformes à de nouvelles philosophies des rapports avec la nature et ses vivants, tant en France qu’à l’étranger. On attend des enquêtes sociologiques ou ethnographiques, animées par un regard anthropologique et/ou historique.

  Resistance to Order and Authority (ROAR)

  CEU/ELTE/Masaryk PhD Conference 2020

  Religion has served to legitimize political power, but it has also been a basis for resistance against order and authority. Be it the Maccabean revolt, Gandhi's practice of non-violence resistance, contemporary neo-pagan religions, or the counter-system movements portrayed by Mark Juergensmeyer in his 2001 book Terror in the Mind of God, religious beliefs have motivated people to reject social order that they deem as unjust, and possibly rise against it. Even in today’s secularized societies, religion has served as the ground for social movements and manifestations addressing pressing socioeconomic threats such as climate change, social inequality, authoritarian governments and minority discrimination. These observations have encouraged new trends in scholarly debate, especially regarding the emergence of alternative religious ideas and rituals in modern societies.  old and new religious convictions legitimized various resistance movements among different communities? Which causes have influenced violent mobilizations against established social order, non-violent struggle, or the establishment of alternative community frameworks? What can these movements and ideas tell us about the role that religion plays today both in secularized and non-secularized societies?

  Cette IXe conférence propose d’interroger la construction de la normalité et, plus globalement, le système de pensée qui structure nos sociétés, selon lequel être « valide » serait la norme, au double sens de la situation la plus répandue et la plus souhaitable. Cette perspective critique entend ainsi mettre en évidence la manière dont nos sociétés sont structurellement construites en référence à cette figure de l’individu valide. Si l’injonction récente à construire des sociétés inclusives semble signaler un tournant radical, qu’en est-il concrètement ? En a-t-on réellement fini avec les représentations tendanciellement négatives, défectives, voire tragiques, du handicap ? Cet appel à communications s’adresse à tous ceux et celles qui sont engagé·e·s dans les recherches en sciences humaines et sociales sur le handicap et la perte d’autonomie.

  Dans ce numéro d'Espaces et Sociétés, nous souhaitons analyser la dimension spatiale des obstacles et des stratégies visant à empêcher la mobilisation des classes populaires, que ce soit avant ou après que celle-ci prenne forme. La notion de démobilisation permet d’interroger de concert les pratiques qui contraignent ou empêchent l’émergence de l’action collective et les formes symboliques et matérielles visant à entraver et réprimer les mobilisations. On peut penser par exemple, d’un côté, aux stratégies de stigmatisation ou de délégitimation, aux pratiques paternalistes, clientélistes ou de cooptation ou, de l’autre, aux modes de répression, directs ou indirects, policiers ou judiciaires.

  Jazz, globalisation and communities

  Now a quasi-universal musical form, present in all five continents, jazz developed as a result of a complex process of cultural exchange, making it a true product of cultural globalisation. Typical of the success of the « glocal », as defined by Robertson in 1994, between the « resilience of the local and global consciousness », jazz has generated new communities of amateur and professional musicians around a strong local musical tradition, thanks first to the presence of foreign musicians, and second to the global nature of jazz itself. The aim of this one-day conference will be to explore the local and global dimensions of these jazz communities from the point of the musicians, the audiences and media, in order to understand how jazz, the quintessentially global musical genre, creates not just local and global communities, but also the links between these very communities.

  Avatars of the underground cultural object

  Il y a cinquante ans paraissait le mensuel Actuel, lancé par Jean-François Bizot et de nombreux journalistes soucieux d’inventer une presse d’un nouveau genre. Ce support inédit, dans le droit-fil de la contre-culture américaine et de sa free press, voulait être une caisse de résonance pour tout objet culturel auquel pouvait être prêté l’étiquette underground. De 1970 jusqu’à nos jours, cette étiquette est restée vivace mais sa définition – malgré les efforts de Bizot et ses collaborateurs pour résoudre l’équation – est restée relativement floue, faisant osciller l’objet culturel underground entre la construction refusant les codes académiques de sa discipline et le projet intensément subversif, volontairement abrasif.

  Le thème retenu des Entretiens d’Auxerre cette année est « En colère ! ». Nous avons voulu décliner notre réflexion à partir de plusieurs moments distincts, dans le fond et dans la forme, associant experts, praticiens et échanges avec le public. À la suite d’une table ronde introductive sur l’actualité renouvelée des colères politiques, nous reviendrons sur les colères populaires passées et présentes, sur l’interprétation mythologique et philosophique de la colère dans la pensée antique, mais aussi sur l’apport psychologique de la colère à la construction du soi, pour conclure sur la présentation des représentations artistiques de la colère des colères, celle de Dieu ou des dieux.

  Conformément à ses trois éditions précédentes, l’objectif du colloque « Agir dans la ville. Art et politique dans l'espace urbain 4 : De la destruction » est de réunir des chercheurs issus de différents champs disciplinaires tels que l’architecture, l’histoire de l’art, la sociologie, l’anthropologie, la philosophie, les arts et sciences de la communication, les langues et lettres, la géographie, le droit ou les sciences historiques autour d’une analyse critique de la dimension politique des interventions dans les espaces urbains. Afin de faire du colloque une véritable plateforme d’échanges et de débats scientifiques, chaque intervenant disposera d’un temps de parole de 40 minutes suivi d’un échange avec l’assistance de 20 minutes.   4th Franco-Latino-American research conference in disability

  Le réseau franco-latinoaméricain de recherche sur le handicap, l'équipe de recherche « Participation sociale et villes inclusives » (PSVI) et le réseau international sur le processus de production du handicap (RIPPH) organisent conjointement le IV^e colloque franco-latino-américain de recherche sur le handicap à l'université de Laval, au Québec, du 25 au 27 juin 2020. Ce colloque est intitulé « Quelles sociétés du vivre-ensemble ? Réfléchir sur les expériences d'inégalités, de participation sociale et les processus identitaires ». Nous invitons les participants à discuter des dynamiques de participation ou d'exclusion des personnes en situation de handicap avec trois thèmes non exclusifs : les pratiques sociales liées à la transformation et à l'utilisation des espaces territoriaux ; les formes d'appartenances des personnes en situation de handicap à un espace social et/ou territorialisé ; la complexité des rapports de pouvoir.
