1956-1958: A revolutionary period that changed Africa (and the world)
The objective of this panel is to compare the various social mobilizations that took place in Africa during the years 1956-1958 and which arguably constitute a historical watershed. The main aim of the panel is not the making of an abstract comparative analysis, but the analysis, based on the testimonial material collected, of how the memory of these events has been structured over time. Moreover, we are interested in understanding what the impacts of these social movements were on the structuring of states and what continuities can be found between the mobilizations of that period and the ary social mobilizations that have shaken the continent in the last ten years, from the ‘Arab Spring’ of 2011 onwards.

Ce thème nous est suggéré par l’action actuelle, à l’échelle mondiale, de la démolition et de l’abattement des statues, des stèles dans un geste de destruction volontaire des vestiges, symboles et icônes du passé liés à l’histoire coloniale et impériale, acte que l’on peut considérer comme une mise en ruines en tant que telle. Pouvait-on imaginer une liquidation des ruines-vestiges du passé pour signifier la ruine d’un passé ?

Arctic policies in perspectives - multiscalar and transdisciplinary approaches
Approches multiscalaires et transdisciplinaires
Loin d’être un espace unifié, gelé ou exotique, l’Arctique est une région particulièrement vulnérable aux bouleversements climatiques, tout comme à la recomposition de la scène internationale. Ce colloque veut offrir un espace de dialogue et de travail international et transdisciplinaire dans un champ d’études régionales dynamique. Ce colloque aura à cœur de réfléchir à la diversité de ces mondes arctiques en s’appuyant sur des recherches innovantes. Un grand nombre de thèmes relatifs à tous les aspects politiques de l’Arctique seront abordés, de la gouvernance évolutive et multiscalaire aux dynamiques sociales et économiques, en passant par les formes de l’habiter et à la place croissante des acteurs extérieurs dans la politique régionale.

La foi dans les vertus et les bénéfices sociaux de la liberté d’expression et du free speech a été largement remise en cause et une critique du paradigme dominant de la manière de penser la liberté d’expression et la censure a vu le jour, dont on a pu regrouper les diverses manifestations sous le label de « New Censorship Theory ». C’est sur la question du « free speech » que porte plus précisément cet appel à propositions pour le n° 106 de la revue Communications.

Open Cultural Studies, an OA peer-reviewed Journal (De Gruyter) invites submissions to a special issue on Capitalist Aesthetics edited by Dr Pansy Duncan & Dr Nicholas Holm (Massey University The issue will explore the aesthetic configurations—from the cute to the comfortable, from the no-brow to the fringe—through which the economic logics of late capitalism come to crystallize today. It invites work that treats the stylistic and formal dimension of cultural objects, and the verdictive and affective dimensions of cultural discourse/experience, as valuable “cryptograms” of contemporary ideological formations and the economic relations they sustain.

Marx, Semiotics and Political Praxis
This special issue of Open Cultural Studies will return to the work of Karl Marx to reflect on and engage with his coherent articulation of words and their use, of words and actions, and of the intellectual and the political. The coherence of his discourse and praxis offers tools to think through, if not seek to transform, the alienated semiotic landscape of our times as described by the Frankfurt school philosopheers, Jean Baudrillard, Frederic Jameson, Sloterdijk and Slavoj Žižek. To commemorate the 200th anniversary of Marx's birth, in this special issue we want to honour his 11th Thesis on Feuerbach: "philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways; the point, however, is to change it."

Religions and the presidential elections in the United States
Catholics have long been an important force in American electoral politics even if they make up 21% of the American population. Could they be, compared to the other religious denominations, the game changer of the next elections ? Despite widespread agreement among scholars that the partisan behavior of Catholics has changed, there is much less consensus on the nature of that change, its permanence, and its causes. This symposium will review the historical patterns of Catholic partisanship and voting behavior, as well as those of the other denominations, discuss major perspectives on electoral change (Republican shift, Hispanic and Asian vote, interreligious alliances) and test there perspectives with the latest survey data.

Le renouveau de la philosophie politique, à partir des années soixante et soixante-dix, a été fortement lié à la critique des phénomènes totalitaires et à une prise de distance polémique à l’égard des diverses philosophies de l’histoire ou d’une certaine pratique des sciences sociales. Que signifie dès lors, pour la philosophie politique, l’éloignement progressif du moment anti-totalitaire qui en avait favorisé la réémergence ? Quelle est son rôle possible dans la connaissance des dynamiques propres des sociétés modernes et dans les débats sur les méthodes qui peuvent fonder cette connaissance ? Quel éclairage peut-elle apporter dans les réflexions normatives sur la démocratie et les divers défis auxquels font face les sociétés modernes ?

Philipp Altmann, Deniz Günce Demirhisar and Jacob Mwathi Mati are organizing a special edition on "Social Movements of the Global South – Methodological and Theoretical Considerations". Their aim is to "bring together research on social movements worldwide that break with the Eurocentric bias of social movement theory and try to develop both theories and methodologies apt to understand action, discourse or outcomes of social movements in the Global South".

Martyrs : arènes publique, médiatique et web
La question des martyrs, phénomène et terme polymorphes et polysémiques, historiquement ancrée et d’actualité, sera l’objet de cette journée d’étude. En français (issu du grec) comme en arabe, l’étymologie du mot « martyr » se rattache à l’idée de témoignage en faveur d’une cause. L’analyse de cette thématique en SHS amène donc à questionner les représentations et usages, politiques en particulier, des martyrs. Les interventions porteront notamment sur l’espace saharien (Belalimat, Le Guen), la Syrie (Boëx) le Venezuela (Vasquez) la Tunisie (Belhadj), le Proche Orient (Larzillière) et Le Sud-Liban (Tabet). L’attention se focalisera principalement sur la médiatisation en ligne de ces figures (YouTube, Facebook, vidéos on line…).

Les problématiques liées à l’extraction des hydrocarbures sont peu traitées ou maltraitées par les sciences sociales, en particulier à propos des pays en développement. Il apparaît donc nécessaire d’affiner des analyses qui sont trop souvent orientées par des présupposés déterministes ou idéologiques telles que la malédiction pétrolière (oil curse) ou la maladie hollandaise (dutch disease). Dans une perspective comparatiste et pluridisciplinaire qui a pour ambition de croiser les regards des anthropologues, des sociologues, des politologues, des économistes et des géographes, ce colloque vise ainsi à enrichir la réflexion en conviant des spécialistes de plusieurs pays à parler de cas d’études comme l’Irak, le Nigeria, l’Algérie, le golfe Arabo-Persique, la Colombie, le Venezuela, le Mexique, la Libye, etc.

Foreign Language Film Conference V
Submissions are invited for the fifth Foreign Language Film Conference, on the theme of Rights and Representations. In this historic setting of the American South, and in conjunction with Birmingham's 50th anniversary remembrance of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church bombing, FLFC celebrates civil and human rights. Scholars will consider the question of civil rights in international cinematic traditions. How does film as an art and a genre represent civil rights, and human rights? What are the places of rebellion, terrorism, or non-violent resistance in forging individual freedoms, and how is this reflected in national cinematic traditions? How do international films address issues of discrimination, violence, repression, the struggle for social equality ? On the pedagogical side of the question, how do films about civil rights teach their viewers about international cultural and political traditions and movements ? How are these films incorporated into classroom discussions of global civil rights ? -
