  Historiographical appraisals and research perspectives

  Le 4 mars 2019, le pape François annonçait l’ouverture, prévue pour le 2 mars 2020, des archives vaticanes concernant le pontificat de Pie XII (1939-1958). Cette nouvelle a suscité l’attention de l’opinion publique internationale. Sur cette période très riche tant pour l’histoire politique, religieuse que culturelle de l’Europe et du monde, les perspectives s’annoncent vastes et aiguisent les appétits historiens. Dans ce contexte d’ouverture prometteuse, ce séminaire propose d’établir un état des lieux de l’historiographie abondante – et souvent polarisée – sur le pontificat du pape Pacelli, mais aussi d’identifier des pistes d’études, tout en nourrissant une dynamique collective de recherche.

  Politics of the body

  Le corps interroge de plus en plus les sciences sociales et humaines. Il s’impose comme sujet-objet de recherche non seulement en tant que produit et représentation culturels, mais aussi comme matérialité propre, elle-même productrice des formes de vie. La politique des corps désigne justement cette subjectivité corporelle active et signifiante. Il s’agit donc d’interroger celles-ci non pas comme objets passifs soumis à l’investigation de l’intelligence (ou l’esprit) d’un sujet transcendant, mais comme sujet qui exprime un réseau de relation et d’interactions où s’estompent les oppositions longuement consacrées entre le matériel et l’immatériel, le corps et l’esprit, l’objet et le sujet, la nature et la culture, le biologique et le psychologique, l’immanence et la transcendance, le visible et l’invisible.

  Religious Community and Modern Statehood

  The passage from the Ottoman empire to modern states

  The conference aims to explore various aspects of the communal organization in the Ottoman Empire for regions such as Asia Minor, Middle East and the Balkans, and to present the changes that occurred within the religious communities during the 19th century and particularly during the period from Tanzimat reforms until the First World War. Key questions in relation to the modernization process of the Ottoman state and the functioning of religious communities, are a) how does the Sublime Porte understand the process of structuring a modern state with respect to religious communities, b) who is responsible for the modern institutions: the state or the religious communities, c) what is the reaction of the religious communities regarding the modernization process d) why and in what way the religious communities are changing on the light of this process.
