Classicamente. Dialoghi Senesi sul Mondo Antico
The junior researchers and PhD students from the Anthropology of the ancient world curriculum of the PhD course in Classics and Archeology are promoting the fourth edition of the seminar cycle Classicamente. Dialoghi Senesi sul Mondo Antico. This year's edition will focus on the varied methodologies and hermeneutical perspectives which represent the scientific guidelines followed by scholars in anthropology of the ancient world ever since its development. It will also focus on those approaches that today contribute to a constant enrichment and renovation of this field of study. Our goal is to offer to all those who take part the chance to present their work, be it the result of long research or elements of a work in progress, in an enviroment open to discussion between different perspectives (anthropological, philological, historical, archeological, semiotic etc.).

Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Christian Initiation from Late Antiquity to the Middle Ages
On the occasion of this meeting dedicated to baptism and baptisteries, we intend to highlight the spatialization of baptismal rituals and their evolution between Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, by comparing different geographical areas within the boundaries of the Roman Empire and its neighbouring regions. Through the dialogue between written sources and archaeology, we would like to investigate whether baptismal practices could assert regional or confessional Christian identities.

The Enlightenment and new Caribbean literature
Les mouvements de la décolonisation et de la libération des peuples du Sud ont, au cours du XXe siècle, essentiellement mené à un refus généralisé de la pensée des Lumières européennes : on peut notamment constater une forte critique postcoloniale de toute tendance d’universalisation du rationalisme de type cartésien ainsi que le refus des visées néocoloniales, néolibérales et hégémoniques, engendrées par l’impact des Lumières dans les sociétés à l’échelle globale. Les nouvelles littératures antillaises semblent pourtant une fois de plus, et à leur manière, faire circuler certaines valeurs éclairées, véhiculant ainsi un savoir autre, imprégné par sa localisation, à la fois dynamique et en perpétuel mouvement. Nos réflexions communes lors du congrès auront pour objet de décrire et d’analyser les raisons, les modes et les effets de cette transformation des valeurs éclairées par les littératures contemporaines, antillaises en l’occurrence.

Ancient religion in rural settlements
XVIII International ARYS Conference
This conference aims to deconstruct the ideas of rural religion as mechanically reproducing urban rituals and religious hierarchies and of the rural world as a space of cultural and religious resilience against urbanity. Rural areas represented an arena for very situational processes of negotiation between, on the one hand, administrative patterns and related social configurations, and, on the other hand, processes of social conformance to the very characteristics of a local specific rural environment, of adaptation to its peculiar habitus and religious customs, possibly involving gods whose competences directly mirrored a geophysical environment made of mountains, rivers, woods, etc.

The Department of Historical Science at the University of Málaga and the Institute of Historiography “Julio Caro Baroja” at the University of Carlos III of Madrid are organizing an international conference titled “Calling upon gods, offering bodies. Strategies of human-divine communication in the Roman Empire from individual experience to social reproduction”. Researchers of Ancient History, History of Religion, Archaeology, Anthropology, Classics, and other related fields are invited to present their research on this topic. The conference aims at analysing how self-experience of religious communication becomes a reflexive phenomenon reproduced in time and space to constitute a collectively shared narrative.

Organised by the ERC Advanced Grant “Mapping Ancient Polytheisms. Cult Epithets as an Interface between Religious Systems and Human Agency” (MAP - 741182), the conference Naming and Mapping the gods in the Ancient Mediterranean. Spaces, Mobilities, Imaginaries hopes to bring together the competences and specialties of multiple disciplines – archaeology, history, geography, anthropology, history of religions, philology, reception, social network analysis – in order to consider new documentation corpora concerning the intersection between the divine and space. Among other things, the conference aims to propose an innovative angle of approach: the intersection between the spaces and designations of the gods.

ERC project “Mapping Ancient Polytheisms” – PhD position
The ERC Advanced Grant “Mapping Ancient Polytheisms. Cult Epithets as an Interface between Religious Systems and Human Agency” (MAP - 741182) offers a funded PhD position in the field of History of Ancient Religions, to be filled by 1 October 2019 for a period of 36 months in Toulouse (France). The project will deal with a significant corpus of inscriptions coming from the Greek colonies founded in the East, between Syria and the Indus, and providing evidence on the presence of Greek and non Greek gods.

Aux dix ans de la mort de J.-M. Ela, le colloque international a pour but d’appréhender son œuvre dans son intégralité et dans toute sa diversité en la plaçant dans la trame de ses relations multiples (théologiques, sociales, religieuses, éthiques, politiques) et en actualisant son approche de la libération et ses postérités.

Dans le contexte actuel qui voit la numérisation de nos disciplines et le développement des humanités numériques (que les anglo-saxons appellent « digital studies »), une nécessité nouvelle s'impose aux chercheur·e·s en sciences humaines et sociales d’utiliser leurs doigts dans des espaces de travail désormais largement numérisés. Les études sur ce nouvel usage des doigts dans les pratiques cognitives commencent à émerger mais ne s'inscrivent que très rarement dans la longue durée. Or étudier la dimension anthropologique de l'usage des doigts dans l'art et les pratiques cognitives au Moyen Âge permet d'historiciser une dimension centrale de l'activité humaine pour mieux comprendre les transformations de nos propres pratiques.

Le colloque international qui se déroulera à l'université de Bretagne Occidentale les jeudi 21 et vendredi 22 septembre 2017 se concentrera sur les rites de passage à la période romaine. Il décalera le regard en le centrant sur l'étude des objets en tant que marqueurs de la performativité rituelle et de la commémoration du passage dans un contexte romain. L’objectif est une mise en parallèle des sources littéraires, épigraphiques et iconographiques avec les données matérielles, les objets découverts en contexte archéologique.

Incense and religion in ancient societies
Although several studies have drawn attention to the role of incense as an ingredient in ritual and a means of communication between men and gods, there remains no comprehensive examination of the practical functions and cultural semantics of incense in the ancient world, whether as a purifying agent, a performative sign of a transcendent world, an olfactory signal to summon the deity, a placatory libation, or food for the gods. Moreover, recent archaeological research has provided evidence (alongside literary, epigraphic and iconographic evidence) that the physical origins and chemical constituents of incense are complex and diverse, as are their properties : resins, vegetable gums, spices, and a welter of aromatic products that could be exhibited and burned before ancient eyes and noses. These were components of a multi-sensory religious experience in which music, colourful costumes, lavish banquets and tactile encounters defined the ritualsensibilities of the community.

A journey between the categories of the pure and impure in the imagination of the ancient world
Le colloque international « Hagnos, Miasma, Katharsis. Voyage entre les catégories du pur et de l’impur dans l’imaginaire du monde ancien » (Cagliari, 4-6 mai 2016) propose une mise au point sur les études consacrées aux phénomènes du pur et de l’impur et à leur exégèse antique. La réflexion autour de ce thème privilégiera une approche interdisciplinaire, tenant compte des perspectives iconographique, littéraire, anthropologique et historico-religieuse, afin d’encourager une confrontation et un dialogue élargis entre les spécialistes de cette question cruciale pour comprendre les mentalités antiques.

Dans le monde ancien, l’exigence d’accomplir des actes de purification, liés au besoin d’expier une faute ou d’accompagner un changement de statut, est perçue comme capitale dans beaucoup de circonstances. Les mots miasma et catharsis utilisés pour désigner respectivement la souillure et la purification, englobent de fait une dimension beaucoup plus articulée, qui se situe entre les sphères de compétence du pur et de l’impur. Les occasions qui prescrivaient le recours à des rites de purification étaient en rapport avec des phases liminaires de la vie, telle la naissance, la mort, mais aussi le mariage, ou encore avec les festivités religieuses. La mort était par exemple considérée l’une des principales sources de souillure. Le miasma qui l’accompagnait pouvait contaminer les dieux et les hommes, les vivants et les morts. Tous devaient alors indifféremment se soumettre aux rituels de purification. Les divinités elles-mêmes n’hésitaient pas à prendre les distances des individus contaminés, comme Artémis, lorsqu’elle abandonne son favori, Hippolyte, à son destin.

Un siècle de vie dominicaine à Saint-Maximin (1859-1957)
Le colloque entend analyser les différentes facettes de l’histoire du couvent dominicain de Saint-Maximin de 1859 à 1957 de manière à en produire une histoire globale qui accorde sa part aux religieux qui y ont vécu, étudié, prié. Une hypothèse forte sur laquelle repose ce colloque est que ce couvent inscrit dans un paysage provençal, bien qu’ancré architecturalement dans le Moyen Âge gothique et situé à distance des mutations des grands centres urbains, n’est en rien un lieu clos sur lui-même : des expulsions de la République aux troubles de la période 1940-1945 sans oublier les effets de la crise d’Action française, Saint-Maximin est un lieu où se vivent les tensions entre l’idéal dominicain et la société moderne. Une interrogation peut ainsi guider les réflexions : comment le couvent de Saint-Maximin, longtemps perçu comme un cadre idéalement ordonné à l’épanouissement de la vocation dominicaine, a-t-il pu faire figure au lendemain de la seconde guerre mondiale, d’obstacle à l’apostolat des frères prêcheurs ?
