  Who named the gods? Utterers, addressers, ritual agents

  The ERC MAP Seminar “The Names of the Gods! 5: Who named the gods? Utterers, addressers, ritual agents” pursues the investigation on the systems of naming of the divine. This year, it focuses on the human agents in the process of naming the divine, whether they are producers of a discourse on the deities, addressers in a communication with the deities, or even experts in charge of a ritual knowledge. What agency do men and women exercise in the production of a specific denomination of the divine? How can we question their choices, their anchoring in a tradition or their innovation strategies?

  Meet the New Gods, Same as the Old Gods? Formulary, Ritual and Status in Hellenistic Ruler Cult

  Panel to be held at the Eighth Celtic Conference in Classics

  Despite recent and widespread interest in Greek hero and ruler cult, evaluating the processes that lead to the bestowal of cultic honours on Hellenistic sovereigns still remains a controversial matter. Political readings of such honours within the framework of contemporary international diplomacy and euergetic discourse have picked up on polarities widely discussed by previous bibliography, such as "dynastic vs. civic", "living vs. posthumous", etc. Yet the main focus is still limited to a "top-down" perspective, which leaves aside the fascinating dialectics between "private" and "public", or to perhaps phrase this more accurately, between "institutional" and "non-institutional" actors.

  Le colloque international « Vivre, grandir et mourir dans l'Antiquité » réunira, les 23, 24, et 25 novembre 2011 à la MISHA de Strasbourg de nombreux spécialistes des rites de passage du Proche-Orient (monde cunéiforme et Egypte) et du monde gréco-romain. Au croisement de la philologie, de l'archéologie, de l'histoire des religions et de l'anthropologie sociale, il cherchera à définir certaines des modalités de la « fabrication » de l'humain.
