  Ships of the desert

  The presence and uses of the camel (Camelus dromedarius) between the Tigris and the Nile in the middle 1st millenium

  Le dromadaire ou chameau à une bosse (Camelus dromedarius) n’est pas une espèce autochtone en Égypte, ni même au Proche-Orient ou dans la péninsule Arabique. L’animal, surnommé « vaisseau des déserts », est pourtant particulièrement bien adapté aux environnements arides et semi-arides de ces régions. Il a des utilisations multiples (transport de charge, transport de personnes, labour, course, consommation humaine etc.), mais son élevage est délicat et requiert un savoir-faire précis. Il a donc semblé opportun de réunir pour la première fois des philologues, des archéologues et des archéozoologues, spécialistes de leur discipline, pour confronter les informations et tenter de mieux cerner l’histoire du Camelus dromedarius, de son élevage et de ses utilisations dans les déserts d’Égypte, du Proche-Orient et de la péninsule Arabique, du milieu du I^er millénaire av. J.-C. à l’époque romaine.

  Call for papers - Prehistory and Antiquity

  From the Caucasus to the Arabian Peninsula: studying domestic spaces in the Neolithic

  Under neolithisation scholars understand multiple processes of social and economic transformation which begin at different times and follow regional trends in the Near and Middle East. It is within the complex relational and spatial framework of the household that these shifts in the structure and activities of Neolithic communities are easiest to apprehend and study. The conference will therefore focus on the domestic sphere in order to highlight and understand the polymorphous nature of what we call neolithisation. Various thematic sessions will be held to shed new light on current data: “Impacts of the shift to a sedentary/semi-sedentary lifestyle”; “Organising the house and the household”; “Private space/public space”; “Acquisition, production, transformation and use”; “Eating-Moving”; “Symbolic manifestations”;“The living and the dead”.

  Correspondance and the Near-East in Antiquity: letters and message in all directions

  Ancient languages in context

  L’objet de cette journée d’études est d’isoler les caractéristiques d’un type de corpus particulier, la correspondance, au sein des civilisations du Bassin Méditerranéen ancien (Égypte, Proche-Orient, monde biblique et monde grec). Les lettres relèvent d’un genre d’écriture spécifique plus ou moins codifié autant du point de vue de la langue que du contenu, et elles fournissent, en outre, un témoignage précieux de la vie quotidienne. À travers cette journée, nous chercherons à mettre en lumière à la fois les traits communs et les divergences entre différents corpus de lettres.

  Late Antiquity in the north-western half of the Arabian peninsula: material culture, chronology, exchanges and territorial entities

  The very quick recent development of archaeological and epigraphic work in Saudi Arabia brought deep changes in our knowledge of the Arabian Peninsula — which until the middle of the 2000's was only based on research on the periphery: Kuwait, Bahrayn, Qatar, The Emirates, Oman, and Yemen. That development reveals how wide the gaps are, of the interpretative frame in particular, for broad geo-historical segments. That is true especially for what is generally called Late Antiquity (4th- early 7th centuries AD), and here "Late Pre-Islamic" or even in local religious terms jâhîliyah, "ignorance" — a term which actually reflects correctly the state of knowledge. The amount of data collected within less than ten years within a large North-Western half of the Peninsula makes possible to see that except for the extreme North (current Joradanian border and Jawf Oasis) the Christianity does not penetrate and Byzantiums unifying power is absent. One is even unable to name what the field teams are dealing with. The proposed doctoral work must produce the state of that question, for which there if a rich evidence in stratigraphy, architecture, objects, and even epigraphy due to the recent demonstration of the Nabataean-Arabic continuum. The comparison with the Byzantine and christianized areas of the extreme North must be one of the leading strands but no way the only one, since the heart of the subject lyes, on the contrary, in the currently unnamed culture(s) of the Peninsula itself.

  Spaces and territories of eastern Roman colonies

  Les recherches épigraphiques et archéologiques de terrain ont progressé depuis plusieurs décennies, aussi bien en Grèce, qu’en Asie Mineure ou au Proche-Orient, qu’il s’agisse d’Antioche de Pisidie, de Dion, de Philippes, de Patras ou de Bérytos, pour les plus fameuses d’entre elles. En vue de mieux connaître l’histoire des colonies romaines d’Orient, une approche territoriale de la vie des communautés est primordiale en raison de la nature socio-politique de ces entités imposées à une échelle régionale par un pouvoir central. Plusieurs perspectives peuvent être proposées afin de questionner leur histoire.
