Hemp : from fiel to tread

Practices, know-how and movements from Protohistory to the 21st century

Numerous hemp kilns abandoned in the countryside, particularly in western France, remind us of the importance of hemp canvas production during modern and contemporary times. Today, our society is re-discovering this plant which appears to be of interest to make agriculture more environment-friendly. Despite this glorious economic past, the history of hemp as a textile crop has yet to be written. To remedy this limitation, an interdisciplinary approach try to write the intertwined history of men and hemp.

Commodities and New Cultures: Perceptions and Interpretations surrounding the Fruits of the Mediterranean throughout History

Dans le cadre de l'ANR FRUCTIMEDHIS « Denrées et cultures nouvelles : perceptions et lectures croisées autour des fruits de la Méditerranée historique », un séminaire de réflexion sur l'introduction d'espèces fruitières nouvelles en France se tiendra au Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle le 7 janvier. Il s'agit de confronter les regards et les approches à partir de sources variées iconographiques, historiques, bioarchéologiques, archéogénétiques afin de mieux cerner les proccessus techniques, culturaux, économiques, sociaux d'introduction des fruits venus de l'ailleurs dans le monde occidental aux périodes historiques.

Call for papers - Prehistory and Antiquity

Centuriation systems and methods of agrarian organisation from the Roman period to the early Middle Age

Methodological and interpretative issues

One of the main characteristics of Roman settlement consists in the implementation of a series of interventions aiming at preparing specific areas for cultivation and making land divisions and distributions. The most important and characteristic feature of these operations is the realization of centuriation systems, that have often radically modified the landscape and agrarian morphology of the countryside. The aim of this conference is to define a methodological protocol of common lines of research on this subject, in order to assign specific roles to the different sources and research tools. The conference will also provide opportunities to deepen a number of themes concerning historical aspects of this phenomenon, particularly that of the continuity or discontinuity of the centuriation systems.
