  Heraldry in the Medieval City – The Case of Italy in the European Context

  A visitor passing through Italy is surprised by the abundance of coats of arms that still decorate the palaces and public monuments of its cities. Relatively undisturbed by the tides of history that destroyed a lot of Europe's heraldic heritage, in the Italian cities this heritage is still alive and well. While the development of heraldic signs occasionally caught the eye of historians and art historians, they have never done justice to the multitude and diversity of the existing sources. Recently, however, research has taken an interest in the subject with renewed vigour and approaches, especially in the case of Italy. The aim of this conference is to establish the current state of research and to advance the subject by linking more closely the history of heraldic communication and the history of cities. To do so, the Italian example shall be put into a European perspective.

  Self, Other and Elsewhere: Images and Imagination in the Port Cities of Atlantic and Mediterranean Europe(18th – 21st Centuries)

  In these times when urban marketing is being applied to outline the identity of our cities with a view to promoting it more effectively, this international seminar proposes to reflect upon the representation systems of European port cities on the Atlantic and the Mediterranean from the 18th century through to the present day. The relationship between city and port – we will be addressing only sea ports here – is far from simple, depending on the types of activities (trade, industry, military, tourism, etc.) and from one period in time to another, with the relationships urban societies have with their port spaces and activities varying in intensity and in nature, especially as the long period of time considered here spans the phases of the development of maritime activity, its decline and, more recently, urban restructuring. In this respect, quaysides form the line along which city and port meet, and provide the most tangible illustration of these transformations. Over the years, how have urban societies represented their ports and the opening onto the world they provide?

  The territories of risk

  Comparative approaches to the environment, cities and mountains

  Depuis quelques années l’histoire des territoires proprement dits s’est considérablement développée, des travaux sur la frontière de Daniel Nordman à ceux de François Walter sur les identités paysagères, dessinant les contours d’un nouvel objet scientifique, aux multiples ramifications, qui appelle un perpétuel questionnement. Espace approprié, espace organisé et pensé, sinon rêvé, le territoire est également un espace à contrôler, à normer et, dans nos sociétés contemporaines, un espace désormais perçu comme fragile, sensible, à protéger, voire à sanctuariser. Il croise aussi bien la ville que la campagne, le plat pays que la montagne, ainsi que les notions de paysages et d’environnement. Ce colloque international prend le parti de mêler les entrées, conjuguées et questionnées à partir du prisme commun du territoire.

  Nature(s): Designing, Experiencing, Representing the natural environment (18th to 21st centuries)

  The international conference "Nature(s)" which will be held on June 6-8th, 2013 and will coincide with other cultural and scientific events in Nantes as a "European Green Capital", will question what is really at stake when human beings consciously deal with nature and natural spaces, especially in an urban context. Over the centuries, how have writers, artists, painters or landscape planners been grappling with nature in a rapidly growing urban world, and how did they question the way in which human beings lived but also dreamt their future?

  L’échange architectural : Europe et Extrême-Orient (1550-1950)

  Ce colloque international sera l’occasion d’examiner la question des échanges opérés dans le domaine architectural entre Europe et Extrême-Orient au cours de la période 1550-1950. A priori, on peut supposer que, s’agissant de deux mondes éloignés, et entrés tardivement en contact direct et régulier, l’identification de ce qui est échangé devrait s’en trouver facilitée. Pourtant, s’il semble évident de reconnaître une forteresse néerlandaise en Indonésie, des églises jésuites en Chine, une pagode chinoise en Angleterre, ou un pavillon de thé japonais en France, il est difficile d’analyser ce qui s’est passé chaque fois, ce qui a été transmis ou emprunté, et comment cet échange a pu se produire et avoir lieu. Il est donc nécessaire de procéder à une enquête portant à la fois sur les causes et le contenu de l’échange.

  Les stratégies de coexistence dans la diversité religieuse

  Le cas des espaces urbains européens, XVIe-XVIIIe siècle

  Cette journée d'étude est organisée dans le cadre des travaux du Centre de Recherche d'Histoire Moderne de l'Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, et se tiendra le samedi 7 février 2009 en Sorbonne. Elle se propose de questionner les différentes formes de relation entre les communautés religieuses des villes de l'Europe moderne, où ces relations sont contraintes, nécessaires ou désirées. Aussi, cette journée interroge également la question d'histoire moderne proposée au concours d'Agrégation, tant chronologiquement que dans le choix de l'affrontement comme prisme privilégié pour aborder les relations interconfessionnelles. En effet, si les villes des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles sont souvent perçues comme des lieux de tension, elles sont aussi des espaces d'échange, de reniement, de mixité ou d'ignorance mutuelle.
