  Textiles and Gender: Production to wardrobe from the Orient to the Mediterranean in Antiquity

  Textiles and gender intertwine on many levels, from the transformation of raw materials into fabric at one end, to dress and garments, and the construction of identity at the other. The conference will examine the gender division of work in the production of textiles, as well as attitudes to dress and gender across the Near East and Mediterranean culture in antiquity (c. 3000 BCE-300CE), tracing both cross-cultural and culturally specific associations.

  Women and work, from Middles Ages to the present day

  De l’Antiquité à nos jours les femmes ont eu un rôle dans le monde du travail. Elles ont toujours été présentes mais bien souvent dans l’ombre. Afin d’obtenir une place réelle et reconnue, de nombreuses femmes ont au cours de l’histoire lutté pour l’égalité. Cependant, cette parité est  difficile à obtenir et de nombreuses femmes sont victimes de différentes formes de harcèlement. Cette problématique est ancrée dans l’histoire mais reste à la fois d’actualité ; c’est pourquoi les doctorants du Centre de recherches interdisciplinaires en histoire, art et musicologie organisent une journée d’étude le jeudi 26 avril 2018 sur la place des femmes dans le monde du travail.

  Call for papers - History

  The place of women in the art professsions, from Antiquity to the present day

  Processes of creation and sociabilities

  Organisée par deux doctorantes en histoire et un doctorant en musicologie du C.R.I.H.A.M. (Centre de recherche interdisciplinaire en histoire, histoire de l’art et musicologie) de l’université de Poitiers, cette journée d’étude pluridisciplinaire a pour ambition d’étudier la place des femmes dans les métiers d’art de l’antiquité à nos jours. L'histoire du travail des femmes a été étudié, notamment par Michelle Perrot. En revanche, ce champ de recherche spécifique sur les métiers de l'art et les femmes n'a pas fait l'objet d'études en histoire de l'art et musicologie. Cette journée d'étude contribuera à interroger la place singulières des femmes dans ces métiers de l'art autour de trois axes : la formation des femmes à ces métiers, leur présence et visibilité, et enfin leur perception et réception dans ces métiers.

  The Role of Women in Work and Society

  French historians are concerned by women’s history since thirty years, but studies are manly dealing with the Occident. For the ancient Near East, there is now a great deal of limited studies on women and gender history, but few syntheses. Furthermore, economic history is well represented in Assyriology, thanks to the good preservation of dozen of thousands of clay tablets recording administrative operations, contracts and acts dealing with family law. Despite these voluminous sources, the topic of work has not been much addressed. The thirty participants of this conference will examine the various economic occupations involving women, in a gender perspective, over the three millennia of Near Eastern history.
