Racism and Anti-Semitism: global, national and local perspectives
Research seminar 2020 / FMSH
The seminar of the International Platform on Racism and Antisemitism intends to approach racism and anti-Semitism as a global, national and local phenomena, resulting from numerous metamorphoses and historical evolutions. The old forms of racism have not disappeared, but they are now in institutional and systemic mode, and in so-called "cultural" or "differentialist" form. Hatred and rejection of the other are now to be found on social networks (conspiracy theories, often anti-Semitic) and in algorithms. At a time of increase in identity-based movements and competition amongst victims, racist and anti-Semitic prejudice is even developing in some minorities or in groups defending minorities.

This is a one-day workshop on the plurality of reconciliation practices in post-conflitc societies. What various meanings are assigned to the word ‘reconciliation’ in the different communities where such initiatives have been implemented? How may conflicting interests or views be reconciled? The organisers also wish to study the influence of historical factors, and assess how the accounts of those seeking reconciliation have evolved over time. An analysis of past initiatives will also be relevant. Finally, a distinction between nationally and locally devised initiatives may be made to better assess the policies implemented, their sustainability, and their impact on the local communities. This is a cross-disciplinary workshop and submissions by researchers in Humanities or Political and Social Sciences will be welcome.

Résolument interdisciplinaire, le séminaire « Relire l'histoire de l'économie sociale et solidaire » vise à étudier les « moments critiques » conduisant à l’institutionnalisation de l'économie sociale et solidaire (ESS), soit à des réarrangements institutionnels où la société civile organisée de l'ESS assume des fonctions médiatrices entre la politique, l'économie et le social. Il sera décliné en trois demi-journées d'étude autour de l'innovation, des territoires et de l'engagement.

Radiohead’s musical, cultural, and political legacies
Following a symposium held at Rennes 2 University last may, further contributions (in English or French) are now sought in order to publish a wide-ranging, peer-reviewed collection of articles appraising OK Computer’s musical, cultural and political legacy twenty years after its release. The aim of this publication is to bring together contributions from scholars who wish to confront Radiohead’s work with their own disciplinary methodologies, including (but not limited to) musicology, sociology, art history, political science, literature, cultural studies or even economics.

Materiality, technologies and affects
À partir de lectures et de présentations de cas, ce nouveau séminaire aborde la question de la « gouvernementalité écrite » en Afrique contemporaine. L’enjeu est de comprendre la façon dont des dispositifs d’écriture et leur traduction matérielle ont permis à la fois la prise sur des sociétés et des individus et l’émergence de nouvelles subjectivités. On s’intéresse particulièrement aux processus formels et informels de bureaucratisation et aux régimes documentaires de l’identité et de la citoyenneté. Il s’agit de faire dialoguer des travaux sur l’administration, la bureaucratie et la citoyenneté avec les études de la culture écrite et matérielle afin d’éclairer les reconfigurations de l’interface entre État et individus, familles, et autres collectifs, autour du rapport au document.

Referendums and the European democratic ideal
There has most definitely been a renewed interest in referendums in Europe. Over time, some countries such as Switzerland have fully integrated this form of popular ballot into their political practises while others, having scarcely used them in the past, are turning to them more and more. Given that the absolute purity of referendums contrasts sharply with the imperfections of representative democracy, they are often considered to be the impassable horizon of the democratic ideal. In this sense, they can be considered to be the essential expression of democratic will. Yet referendums are more frequently referred to in political discourse than they are actually put into use. -

The Liberal Party in Britain : Past and Present
Le Parti libéral, majoritaire en 1906, devient minoritaire à partir de 1910. Le gouvernement est néanmoins resté aux mains de libéraux, au moins partiellement, jusqu’en 1924. De même, membre de la coalition gouvernementale en 2010, le Parti libéral n’a pas été sans influence sous les gouvernements précédents. L'histoire se répète-t-elle ? Les pistes qui seront explorées sont celles qui permettent d’expliquer pourquoi et à quel moment, le parti libéral a perdu le pouvoir, et, pourquoi et à quel moment, il l’a retrouvé. -

La gouvernance du sport est aujourd’hui au cœur des préoccupations institutionnelles. Relevant historiquement de l’initiative privée, la gestion du sport, son développement et son organisation ont fait très tôt l’objet d’une attention spécifique. À différents niveaux, nombreux sont ceux qui ont développé des stratégies particulières pour en transformer les pratiques, l’organisation et en définitive son rôle social. Faisant intervenir plusieurs catégories d’acteurs, des institutions aux intérêts parfois contradictoires, cette gouvernance a été soumise à des enjeux diversifiés que le colloque aura pour ambition de préciser.
