  The British, American and French Photobook: Commitment, Memory, Materiality and the Art Market (1900-2019)

  The Maison Française conference committee invites proposals on the social history of the British, American or French photobook from 1900 to the present. Papers will address: commitment or explicit political engagement; memory, commemoration and the writing of history; materiality (whether real or virtual), and how material form affects circulation, handling, critical responses and the social life of the photobook. We invite contributors to analyse these topics with respect to the growth of the market for the photobook as a commodity and an object of bibliophilic attention. Proposals focusing on contemporary productions are particularly welcome.

  Tracing types

  Comparative analyses of nineteenth-century sketches

  A new wave of scholarship has emerged in recent years, which examines nineteenth-century sketches (sometimes referred to as “panoramic literature”) from a transnational perspective. The present international conference seeks to continue this comparative reflection by placing the spotlight on the comparative analysis of texts and images of specific types and by tracing how these representations vary across sketches from different places, media and editorial contexts.

  (Bé)vues du futur. La dystopie par le texte et l’image (1840-1940)

  La dystopie conjugue l’anticipation rationnelle à un traitement déceptif ou critique. Cette double caractéristique la rend indissociable de la mise en scène visuelle inhérente à la projection dans le futur, imaginée ou figurée. Cet ouvrage collectif entend interroger les représentations dystopiques croisées entre le texte et l’image dans la production littéraire et artistique francophone entre 1840 et 1940, c’est-à-dire dans l’intervalle qui va de la publication des premiers romans dystopiques illustrés (Émile Souvestre, Le Monde tel qu’il sera, illustré par Bertall, Penguilly et St-Germain, 1846) et de l’engouement pour l’esthétique romantique de la ruine, jusqu’au seuil d’un événement traumatique mondial qui renouvellera la dystopie en la dotant d’un imaginaire de la dissension et de la perte humaine.

  Paul Faucher (1898-1967) : l’édition au service de l’éducation nouvelle

  Co-organisé par Dynadiv (EA 4246. Université de Limoges), Civiic (EA 2657. Université de Rouen), Circeft (EA 4384. Université de Paris 8) avec le concours de l'association des Amis du Père Castor, ce séminaire souhaite revenir sur le parcours singulier de l'éditeur Paul Faucher alias le Père Castor. Son engagement en faveur de la presse enfantine sera, ici, interrogée au regard de son militantisme pédagogique en faveur de l'Éducation nouvelle. Les fonctions et les responsabilités qu'il eut au sein de ce mouvement interpellent sur le sens de ses actions et des liens qu'il va entretenir, durant toute sa carrière, avec les promoteurs d'une éducation plus attentive aux besoins des enfants.

  La pornographie en France, XIXe-XXe siècle

  Quelques travaux ont pointé tout l'intérêt que représente l'étude de cette contre-culture qu'est la pornographie, dont Robert Darnton a montré pour le XVIIIe siècle le potentiel séditieux. Malgré cela, l'histoire culturelle du contemporain peine toujours à s'emparer de la pornographie comme objet d'étude. Ce retard n'est pas réellement surprenant : volontairement ou non, l'histoire culturelle reprend les hiérarchies culturelles et la pornographie est sans doute l’une des plus illégitimes des catégories de la « culture populaire ». Cette journée d'études a pour objectif de combler les lacunes de la recherche sur la pornographie contemporaine, à travers un regard portant à la fois sur ses productions et ses consommations, ses acteurs et ses pratiques.
