The relations of power and domination in portrait photography (1840-2000)
L’idée force est de croiser des phénomènes de domination (sans limites géographiques ni temporelles) à la technique du portrait photographique (1840-2000). Comment ce type d’image personnelle et, dans certains cas, intime peut-il être marqué (dans ses thèmes ou mises en scène) par des contextes de colonisation, d’occupation, par des rapports de classe, d’âge, de handicap, de race, de genre, par des logiques de classement sécuritaire ou nosographique ou par tout lien de subordination ou de stigmatisation ?

Images du travail, travail des images (ITTI) journal special issue
Tout au long de son histoire, ancienne ou récente, le syndicalisme, qu'il soit salarié, agricole, étudiant ou patronal, catégoriel ou interprofessionnel, local, national ou international... a généré, conçu mais aussi diffusé des images du travail en nombre croissant. Ces images sont si nombreuses et diversifiées, qu'il apparaît difficile de les quantifier et recenser. Au gré de l'évolution des techniques, des pratiques et des moyens, les supports n'ont en effet pas cessé de se diversifier : dessins, affiches, drapeaux, sculptures, peintures, photographies, films, reportages, documents numériques... Et pourtant, malgré une production des plus abondantes, l'étude des images du travail produites au sein du mouvement syndical n'a fait que très peu l'objet de travaux et analyses. C'est donc dans le sillage des travaux initiés depuis 2015 par la revue Images du travail, travail des images, que ce dossier souhaite apporter un éclairage nouveau.

Peripheries, Minorities and Taboos in the films of Marcel Łoziński, Pál Schiffer and Želimir Žilnik
The international conference bears a transdisciplinary outlook as it cross-references a variety of scientific fields (history of cinema, aesthetics, philosophy, history, political science, anthropology, sociology, etc.). A film retrospective of documentary films will be held at the Cinémathèque du documentaire (Centre Pompidou, Paris), as well as screenings followed by debates and panel discussions at Inalco in the presence of the filmmakers Marcel Łoziński and Želimir Žilnik.

International PhD Contract 2020-2023
Full-time, 36-month-long international PhD contract at Sorbonne University (PhD program IV) within the research centre Eur'ORBEM and in partnership with the French Research Centre in Social Sciences (CEFRES) in Prague, from 1 October 2020, under the supervision of Clara Royer. The PhD thesis may be written in French or in English. PhD propositions should focus on the discourses and practices surrounding the orphan condition in literature and/or visual arts (cinema, photography, graphic arts and so forth) in the wake of the violence and demographic upheavals that characterized 20th century East-Central Europe. Because of its interdisciplinary scope, applicants with a background in social history, literary studies and/or visual arts specialized in one or several countries of East-Central Europe may apply.

We seek proposals from post-doctoral scholars, recent PhDs, as well as those in the final stages of their dissertations with a background in related fields, in particular migration studies and social history, especially as they intersect with museum studies and/or public history. Participants will discuss, from a theoretical and a practical point of view, the best ways to display, in an exhibition context, the daily experience of past migrations in all their social dimensions.

L’objectif de ce colloque est de rassembler des chercheurs qui ont fait de l'image du pauvre et de la pauvreté dans les arts visuels, l'histoire des représentations et la littérature un sujet d'étude en soi. Il s'agira notamment d'évaluer, à l'échelon européen, l'impact d'une production significative bien que rarement prise en compte, d’analyser son iconographie et d’en cerner le sens, d’en préciser les débouchés, les discours et leurs enjeux (comiques, sentimentaux, économiques, religieux, politiques etc.) à la lumière d’éléments contextuels précis.

Les doctorants de l’École doctorale II Histoire moderne et contemporaine de Sorbonne Université organisent leur journée d’étude annuelle. Cette journée se divisera cette année en deux temps principaux : une première demi-journée portera sur une thématique large visant à rassembler les sujets de doctorants issus de différentes périodes et traitera de la question suivante : « Les bons et les méchants. » La seconde demi-journée sera consacrée à des questions méthodologiques autour du thème principal « Les représentations picturales et photographiques en histoire ».

Cultural encounters in the nineteenth century
The exhibition The Dutch in Paris, which was on show in the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam and in the Petit Palais, Paris during the fall of 2017 and spring of 2018 respectively, aimed to visualize the artistic exchange between Dutch and French artists between 1789 and 1914. As part of a larger research project, set up by the RKD – Netherlands Institute for Art History, the exhibition generated so much response that ESNA, in collaboration with the RKD and NWO, decided to organize an international conference on the subject, focusing specifically on international as well as national and local points of encounter and how they facilitated artistic exchange.

Le colloque organisée par l'Institut d'Histoire Contemporaine de NOVA FCSH cherchera à répondre à des questions telles que: quelles idées communes, quels buts et quelles attitudes exprimés par la presse satirique ont façonné le concept de nation? Qui étaient les "autres" représentés par l’image satirique par opposition à "nous"? Comment les visions et les représentations de «l'autre» par opposition au «soi» exprimées par l'image satirique ont-elles aidé à définir les identités nationales, à construire la notion de communauté et à façonner les stéréotypes nationaux ?

À travers les œuvres et la pensée créatrice, elle propose à ses auteurs d’appréhender cette folie, peut-être nécessaire et magnifique, qui s’exprime dans une forme de démesure, d’excès, d’utopie ou de dystopie, mais encore de décalage ou de distorsion qui peuvent être la marque d’une lucidité tournée tant vers la franche rigolade que vers l’authentique désespoir. Que sa raison propre l’éclaire ou l’aveugle, le fou est conduit à prendre des risques, à transgresser, à déraper, à devenir aux yeux d’autrui et du sens commun un individu hors-norme. Cette folie amuse mais elle inquiète aussi car, dans un geste réfléchi ou pulsionnel, le fou peut basculer du côté de l’irrationnel (fun ou déviance) mais aussi dans une forme de sagesse, voire une certaine philosophie du monde. Faut-il donc être déraisonnable pour être fou ?

A central goal of the workshop is to open up an international exchange and to connect perspectives from the history of science, the history of emotions, the history of the body and media history in order to shed new light on a history of health as a cultural history. The event is part of the research project “The Healthy Self as Body Capital: Individuals, Market-Based Societies, and Body Politics in Visual Twentieth Century Europe” funded by the European Research Council under the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (Advanced Grant agreement No 694817) led by Christian Bonah (University of Strasbourg) and Anja Laukötter (Max Planck Institute for Human Development, Berlin).

Cette journée d’études vise à explorer l’histoire croisée de la photographie et du design, autrement dit la rencontre entre ces deux « arts » industriels qui ont à voir avec la série, le multiple et le reproductible depuis la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle. Malgré un usage de plus en plus massif de la photographie dans le domaine du design au cours du XXe siècle, voire une tyrannie du photographiable, le lien entre photographie et design a été peu historicisé. Si la photographie a pu être tour à tour un moyen d’enregistrement, de contrôle, de distanciation, d’exposition mais aussi de publicité du design, en quoi cet outil a-t-il également pu être un lieu d’expérimentation ?

The conference will probe, challenge and expand upon the academic narrative of male homosociality through the lens of art history. It aims to establish an overview of a variety of male bonds that underpinned nineteenth-century art, and to consider the theoretical and methodological implications of the study thereof. In so doing, it seeks to build a bridge between traditional art-historical scholarship and the fields of gender and gay and lesbian studies: an interdisciplinary exchange of which the full potential for scholarship on the nineteenth century remains to be exploited.

The memory of films in viewer narrative
Individuelle ou collective, la culture cinématographique se nourrit du souvenir des films. L’histoire du cinéma s’est d’ailleurs longtemps écrite au filtre de la mémoire des cinéphiles. Cette journée propose d’explorer ces souvenirs dans les récits de spectateurs, en s’intéressant en particulier à la manière dont ceux-ci se cristallisent (autour d’une histoire, de quelques images – fixes ou animées –, de répliques…) et dont ils témoignent d’une expérience tout à la fois singulière et partagée. Dans une perspective interdisciplinaire attentive aux questions de méthode, on cherchera ainsi à cerner comment ces souvenirs attestent et réactivent le pouvoir évocateur du cinéma.

The international and interdisciplinary symposium "Dance and Nations: identities, alterities, boundaries" is a scientific meeting organized within the framework of the of the HdD (Hermeneutics of Dance research program, directed by Arianna Fabbricatore),. Il brings together a team of scholars to question how theatrical dance evolves in the European social and cultural space. Its purpose is to discuss the different aspects related to the circulation of dance in Europe and to open up research on the semiotic, political and social issues of dance as a sign, expression or representation of the permeable bounderies between cultural identities.

1917-2017: Comparative Looks on the Soviet Artistic Avant-Gardes
The Soviet artistic avant-gardes have been raising a specific interest for a long time. For instance, their multiple practices, their theoretical apparatus, their opuses as well as the influences they exerted have been largely surveyed by the academic world. Ever since the 1990’s a reappraisal of the multiple reuses and reinterpretations of those “avant-gardes” have been carried out. Our international symposium aims to question and put into context that reappraisal and the renewal it induces in the field of scholarly research. The year 2017 as an historical landmark, the centenary of the Russian revolutions, offers a conducive environment for such reflections and thoughts. While evocating various and contradictory narratives, this centenary leads to rethink the vast array of meanings embodied by the revolutionary events as well as to shed a new light on the opuses they produced or lived through.

Transnational networks in 1930s Paris
L’arrivée d’une jeune génération de photographes venue de toute l’Europe a inscrit le Paris des années 1930 dans des réseaux internationaux de la photographie sociale. Aussi furent éditées, vues et discutées les productions visuelles de nombreux pays. Les photographes furent associés aux organisations culturelles de la gauche internationaliste et anticolonialiste, contribuant à faire de Paris tout à la fois une caisse de résonance des transformations du monde et un haut-lieu de débats sur les rapports entre les images et la politique.
