Peripheries, Minorities and Taboos in the films of Marcel Łoziński, Pál Schiffer and Želimir Žilnik
The international conference bears a transdisciplinary outlook as it cross-references a variety of scientific fields (history of cinema, aesthetics, philosophy, history, political science, anthropology, sociology, etc.). A film retrospective of documentary films will be held at the Cinémathèque du documentaire (Centre Pompidou, Paris), as well as screenings followed by debates and panel discussions at Inalco in the presence of the filmmakers Marcel Łoziński and Želimir Žilnik.

"All Alone" in East-Central Europe: Reinventing the Orphan from the Fascist to the Socialist Era
International PhD Contract 2020-2023
Full-time, 36-month-long international PhD contract at Sorbonne University (PhD program IV) within the research centre Eur'ORBEM and in partnership with the French Research Centre in Social Sciences (CEFRES) in Prague, from 1 October 2020, under the supervision of Clara Royer. The PhD thesis may be written in French or in English. PhD propositions should focus on the discourses and practices surrounding the orphan condition in literature and/or visual arts (cinema, photography, graphic arts and so forth) in the wake of the violence and demographic upheavals that characterized 20th century East-Central Europe. Because of its interdisciplinary scope, applicants with a background in social history, literary studies and/or visual arts specialized in one or several countries of East-Central Europe may apply.

En quoi le spectacle cinématographique fait-il communauté ? Doit-il être considéré comme une instance de division ou un moteur consensuel au sein de celles-ci ? Comment se forgent les publics en situation minoritaire ? Il s’agira de questionner côte à côte, parfois d’un seul tenant, deux types de processus : les phénomènes d’homogénéisation culturelle et ceux de coexistence, forcée ou consentie, entre des groupes multiples au sein d’un même territoire en explorant le large éventail de pratiques collectives politiques et sociales émergeant au sein et en marge des espaces de projection animée.

Envisioning Latin America: Power and Representation in audiovisual (re)productions
This issue seeks to critically address power structures in audiovisual (re)productions in and from Latin America and discuss how these play a role in the societal construction and representation of individual and collective identities, the ‘us’ and the ‘other’. By doing so, it aims at understanding how these representations – and broader discourses associated therewith – can be critically examined through media productions (cinema, television, radio, photography etc.) and their use as historical sources.

Excess? Images of body, health, morality and emotions across the media
A central goal of the workshop is to open up an international exchange and to connect perspectives from the history of science, the history of emotions, the history of the body and media history in order to shed new light on a history of health as a cultural history. The event is part of the research project “The Healthy Self as Body Capital: Individuals, Market-Based Societies, and Body Politics in Visual Twentieth Century Europe” funded by the European Research Council under the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (Advanced Grant agreement No 694817) led by Christian Bonah (University of Strasbourg) and Anja Laukötter (Max Planck Institute for Human Development, Berlin).

The international and interdisciplinary symposium "Dance and Nations: identities, alterities, boundaries" is a scientific meeting organized within the framework of the of the HdD (Hermeneutics of Dance research program, directed by Arianna Fabbricatore),. Il brings together a team of scholars to question how theatrical dance evolves in the European social and cultural space. Its purpose is to discuss the different aspects related to the circulation of dance in Europe and to open up research on the semiotic, political and social issues of dance as a sign, expression or representation of the permeable bounderies between cultural identities.

1917-2017: Comparative Looks on the Soviet Artistic Avant-Gardes
The Soviet artistic avant-gardes have been raising a specific interest for a long time. For instance, their multiple practices, their theoretical apparatus, their opuses as well as the influences they exerted have been largely surveyed by the academic world. Ever since the 1990’s a reappraisal of the multiple reuses and reinterpretations of those “avant-gardes” have been carried out. Our international symposium aims to question and put into context that reappraisal and the renewal it induces in the field of scholarly research. The year 2017 as an historical landmark, the centenary of the Russian revolutions, offers a conducive environment for such reflections and thoughts. While evocating various and contradictory narratives, this centenary leads to rethink the vast array of meanings embodied by the revolutionary events as well as to shed a new light on the opuses they produced or lived through.

The Smithsonian American Art Museum is now accepting nominations for the 2017 Charles C. Eldredge Prize. Single-author books devoted to any aspect of the visual arts of the United States and published in the three previous calendar years are eligible. To nominate a book, send a letter (not to exceed one page in length) explaining the work’s significance to the field of American art history and discussing the quality of the author’s scholarship and methodology. Nominations by authors or publishers for their own books will not be considered.

Cultural Literacy in Europe: Second Biennial Conference (CLE2017)
CLE 2017 is dedicated to the issue of motion, which is crucial for the contemporary human condition. The concept of motion captures the state of affairs in Europe today, where seemingly rock-solid arrangements, like the shapes of borders, are being nullified and apparently irreversible processes, like European integration, are turned around and dismantled. It marks our spatial relations, as is clearly visible in the challenges of migration, experiences of social and professional mobility, social movements or tourism. Mobility also has a temporal aspect, which is visible in the processual and performative character of identity, memory or history. The other key term we would like to address is emotion, which aims to contextualize this movement and localize it in human affectivity – feelings, motives and perceptions. Texts and other kinds of representations, the body in movement, forging personal links, living with memories – all these bring motion and emotion together. We believe that the notion of cultural literacy will help us read and comprehend these diverse, changeable phenomena.

Bacchanales ! Le nu, l'ivresse et la danse au XIXe siècle
À l’occasion de l’exposition Bacchanales modernes ! le nu, l’ivresse et la danse dans l'art français du XIXe siècle, ce colloque international se propose de prolonger la réflexion autour des apparitions polymorphes du mythe de Bacchus dans l’art du XIXe siècle, au prisme d’une approche pluridisciplinaire. Le colloque s’adresse aux chercheurs en histoire de l’art, en littérature, en musicologie ou en arts du spectacle, et entend prendre en compte la dimension internationale d’un tel sujet. Il s’agira d’éclairer la spécificité de ces « bacchanales modernes » dans leurs implications esthétiques et culturelles, suivant le mythe antique dans ses nouveaux camouflages.

The invalids of the Great War on screen - France/Russia/Germany

Parmi les victimes de la Grande Guerre, les invalides sont ceux qui ont sans doute le plus profondément frappé l'opinion. En France, mais aussi en Allemagne et en Russie, les « gueules cassées », les soldats souffrant de shell shock et tous ceux qui ont perdu un membre à la guerre ont mobilisé la société civile, inspiré les artistes … et souvent été les moteurs des associations d'anciens combattants. La médecine militaire a accompli d'immenses progrès lors des quatre années 1914-1918 : les corps de ces jeunes hommes partis au front en bonne santé ont offert un immense champ d'expérimentation. Dans la tradition déjà ancienne du cinéma sanitaire et médical, les atteintes corporelles et psychiques ont été captées par les caméras, les inventions et les découvertes scientifiques ont été projetées sur les écrans de tous les pays. La lutte contre l'ennemi dans le champ médical – la maladie et la mort – fait l'objet d'une propagande cinématographique aussi intense que celle sur les champs de bataille. Comment filme-t-on en France, en Allemagne et en Russie l'épreuve que fait subir aux chairs et aux esprits la guerre mécanique ?

Sources and historical methodologies
Cette journée d'études souhaite questionner les sources mobilisées par l'historien et les méthodologies employées pour étudier l'histoire des sociétés romani dans l’Europe moderne et contemporaine. Afin d'échapper aux généralités et aux simplifications accumulées à propos des populations romani, dites aussi tsiganes, il s'agira de poser les différents termes d'une analyse de la documentation historique, de confronter les expériences du chercheur face aux sources disponibles et de discuter la nature particulière de l’enquête archivistique dans le domaine des études tsiganes, ou Romani Studies.

Chronicles and action of a visionary political photographic and cinematic undertaking
Suite à la journée d'études « L'œuvre humaniste et sociale des archives de la planète d'Albert Kahn (1919-1931) : pratiques et perspectives d'une documentation visuelle au service du monde » du 24 janvier 2014 dernier ; ce colloque souhaite réunir des contributeurs en sciences humaines (historiens du cinéma, de l'art, de la photographie, historiens, géographes, anthropologues, etc.) afin d'identifier et de questionner les assises communes des oeuvres d'Albert Kahn et ses approches visant au partage des connaissances du monde ainsi qu'à la communication sociale par le truchement de la photographie et du cinéma. Soit comment les productions visuelles d'Albert Kahn tentèrent de modifier les représentations, mais aussi les idées et les comportements afin de renforcer les solidarités.

Revolution and cinema: the Portuguese example
In honour of the fortieth anniversary of the Carnation Revolution, this three-day international conference seeks to interrogate the cinematic representation of the political event from 1974 to today. Paul Ricœur states that “rethinking is a form that cancels temporal distance.” To rethink the revolution would then entail making the revolution present, making it come alive, bringing the past and the present together, questioning the effects of the passing of time on the images, the narratives and on cinema itself as an historical device. Today’s acute economic and political crisis in Portugal shakes the very foundations of April’s democracy, and this legacy could perhaps use the present as the inaugural strength of another history to come. Taking the cinema of revolution as a nodal point and as a major historical shift, which links – other than referential and chronological ones –, unify the pre- and post-revolutionary Portuguese cinemas? In other words, how can this idea of “revolution” remain, irrigate and illuminate Portuguese cinema?

The early days of video – politics of video
Claims to autonomy and institutional inscription
Le séminaire du groupe de recherches « Vidéo des premiers temps » se propose d’explorer un domaine qui reste à ce jour peu étudié. Dès lors qu’elle est devenue « légère », il y a plus de quarante ans, la technique vidéo a donné lieu à des appropriations diverses, à des usages sociaux et créatifs qu’il convient certainement de ne pas dissocier d’emblée (d’un côté la vidéo militante, de l’autre l’art vidéo) tant ils revêtirent les uns et les autres un caractère expérimental. Nous voudrions tenter d’appréhender les débuts de la vidéo d’une manière compréhensive, en donnant à entendre la voix des acteurs/trices de son histoire et en nous appuyant sur les documents écrits, nombreux mais mal recensés, afin de nous permettre de revisiter les chronologies, de saisir des trajectoires, de mettre en lumière des dispositifs.

From Popular Unity to Chile’s democratic transition (1970-2013): cinema, politics, and memory
À l’occasion du quarantième anniversaire du coup d’État militaire du 11 septembre 1973 contre le gouvernement de Salvador Allende au Chili, l’association de doctorants en études cinématographiques Les Trois lumières organise deux journées d’étude. Prévues pour les 9 et 10 octobre 2013 à l’INHA, elles seront consacrées à la représentation cinématographique de la politique du gouvernement d’Unité populaire et de la répression, de 1973 jusqu’à la transition démocratique, ainsi qu’aux manifestations de solidarité internationale des milieux cinématographiques avant et après le putsch.
