  Hippolyte Taine and the humanities and social sciences

  Un quart de siècle après le colloque « Taine au carrefour des cultures du XIX^e siècle » (1993), où en est-on de la réévaluation de son œuvre ? Plus précisément, que peut-on dire aujourd’hui de la place que Taine a occupée et occupe encore au sein des sciences de l’homme et de la société ? Se voulant un point d’étape sur la revisite toujours actuelle de l’œuvre de Taine, le dossier « Hippolyte Taine et les sciences de l’homme et de la société » des Etudes Sociales voudrait aussi contribuer à la nécessaire réflexion de ces sciences sur elles-mêmes, leur histoire comme leur actualité. En effet, bien qu’ayant vieilli, l’œuvre de Taine reste une pierre de touche des apories des sciences de l’homme et de la société. Le dossier envisagé comportera deux volets : l’apport de Taine, en son temps, à la constitution d’une science de l’homme et de la société ; la transmission et le devenir de l’oeuvre de Taine au sein des sciences humaines et sociales.

  Enhancing human in Europe: dream and nightmare of the interwar period

  Number of historians and philosophers consider in general that transhumanism and its aim at enhancing the human through applied science and technology have their roots in the inter-war period: Julian Huxley, Jean Coutrot, John B.S. Haldane or John D. Bernal are indeed massively considered as the precursors of such ideas. But are they the sole references to mention when considering the inter-war origins of transhumanism, or are they just the tip of the iceberg of a broader current of thought emerging at that time? Such question immediately raises another one, which requires clarification : can current transhumanism(s) really be linked to the ideas emerging in the inter-war period ? The aim of the workshop will be first to check whether and how the idea of an enhanced human through technology intervention may have circulated in Europe during that time. Secondly, space will be given to look for pertinent criteria for the identification of a « transhumanism » of the inter-war period, by evaluating the nature of the indices which may be studied: mobilizing ideas, currents of thoughts, schools of thoughts, sociotechnical imaginaries, etc. Within these perspectives, the workshop will make possible comparisons between the different European contexts (England, France, Italy, Germany, Russia, etc.), and the several papers will help us to better understand the circulation of ideas, networks and human exchanges which contributed to forge the cradle of transhumanist ideas. Communications will be in French or in English.

  Encyclopaedism and politics in the age of revolutions

  Late 18th-late 19th centuries

  La question des rapports entre sciences et politique est un domaine majeur de la recherche en histoire des sciences. À partir de réflexions sur les logiques d'autonomisation à l'œuvre entre ces deux univers, sur la co-construction du politique et du scientifique, ou sur les formes diverses de leurs hybridations, les travaux ont permis de relire la genèse du gouvernement représentatif, des institutions scientifiques et des publics de la science. Ce colloque vise à reprendre cette interrogation à partir d'un observatoire particulier, celui des publications encyclopédiques de la période 1780-1880 environ.

  Ce colloque a pour but, à travers la discussion et la confrontation des perspectives wittgensteinienne et foucaldienne, de mieux délimiter l’efficace persistante d’une pensée non psychologique et non « métaphysique » de la subjectivité, si décisive dans les débats contemporains autour de la reconnaissance et de la subjectivité constituée, ainsi que d’en mettre en lumière les conséquences sur les plans éthique et politique.

  Disagreement

  21st international philosophical conference of Evian

  Is there disagreement? That is, do we really disagree? From the standpoint of everyday life, the answer seems to be clear. Disagreements among us are legion: about scientific, political, and social questions, about questions of right conduct and religion, about questions concerning subjective preferences and aesthetic taste (to mention only a few examples). From the standpoint of rationality, however, it is not so clear how these disagreements should be assessed. Shouldn’t the forceless force of the better argument carry the day in almost all cases of disagreement? Isn’t it possible in principle to determine which view is the better one among rival views?
