Images for the army

A century of military cinema and photography, 1915-2015

En 2015, l’Établissement de communication et de production audiovisuelle de la Défense (ECPAD) fêtera son centenaire. Créées à l’occasion du premier conflit mondial, les sections photographique et cinématographique de l’armée, puis les célèbres « SCA » et « ECPA », ont permis depuis lors au ministère de la défense de produire des images lors des divers conflits dans lesquels la France a été engagée à travers son armée. Ce colloque, et le livre qui en sera tiré simultanément, visent à mettre en valeur et à interroger l’histoire et les sources visuelles ou archivistiques du cinéma et de la photographie aux armées depuis leur apparition en France en 1915 jusqu’aux engagements les plus récents.

Democracy and Technology. Europe in Tension from the 19th to the 21st century

Public debate, social media demonstrations, participative assessment, technocracy and transparency: these are just some of the issues on the growing list of multiple and evolving interactions between technology and democracy in Europe since the middle of the 19^th Century. The sixth Tensions of Europe conference aims historicizing and exploring these complicated links in long-term perspective. It will address key contemporary issues such as the democratization of technology and the vulnerabilities of technological democracies. The conference will close the ANR funded project « Large technical networks and democracy: innovations, practices and interested parties in long-term perspective, from 1880 to the present day ». The conference will also feature the official presentation of the Making Europe book series, more than 40 panels, and of course the traditional untraditional Tensions events – this time in Parisian style!

Democracy and Technology, Europe in Tension from the 19th to the 21st Century

Sixth Plenary Conference of Tensions of Europe

This conference will be devoted to the complex relationship between democracy and technology from a European and transnational perspective. The core of this reflection will be the complementarities and cross-fertilization that arise in the interaction of technology and democracy, but also the frictions, tensions, and paradoxes that emerge in the discourses, representations and interplay of actors. This historical conference is open to a wide range of interdisciplinary inquiry. It invites proposals for papers addressing an issue that up to now has mainly been investigated on a national basis. Focusing on circulations and appropriations of technology in a European and transnational perspective, the conference should open new ways to think and talk about the history of Europe.

Jean d’Arcy, communication serving human rights, 1913-1983

Le colloque, « Jean d’Arcy. La communication au service des Droits de l’homme », qui aura lieu les 25-26-27 janvier 2012, se donne comme objectif de tracer le portrait de l’homme et de son action dans son siècle. Il s’agit de porter un regard sur l’homme de programme des années cinquante, pionnier d’un modèle de télévision de service public, en resituant ces années charnières (1952-1959) dans le temps long de la vie intellectuelle, professionnelle et personnelle de Jean d’Arcy.

Images, Medias and Politics

Colloque organisé par le Laboratoire communication et politique (UPR 3255 CNRS), avec la collaboration de l’Institut des sciences de la communication du CNRS (ISCC), l’Université Sorbonne Nouvelle Paris 3, l’Institut de recherche sur le cinéma et l’audiovisuel (IRCAV) et l’Institut national de l’audiovisuel (INA). Les interrogations traditionnelles sur les usages politiques de l’image (propagande, communication politique…) ont été récemment renouvelées par l’apparition de nouveaux moyens de communication (téléphones portables, blogs, réseaux sociaux...). Ce colloque s'intéressera à la façon dont s’opèrent les plus récentes appropriations des nouvelles images et comment celles-ci influencent l'usage et les contenus d'images plus traditionnelles (photographie, télévision...).
