Work in progress on North Africa - from Antiquity to the present day

Ces dernières années, les recherches sur l’Afrique du Nord ont fait l’objet d’un dynamisme certain, toutes périodes historiques confondues. Le nombre d’études en cours, la variété des sujets et la diversité des approches sont importants et porteurs de renouvellements historiographiques. Malgré ce mouvement général, force est de constater une tendance au maintien des découpages chronologiques classiques des grandes périodes historiques dans les cadres d’analyse et dans les évènements scientifiques eux-mêmes. Partant de ce constat, l’université de Rouen et le Groupe de recherche d'histoire (GRhis) organisent une journée d’étude dont la finalité est la rencontre entre chercheurs de toutes périodes dont les travaux en cours portent sur l’Afrique du Nord.

Histoire de l’Algérie coloniale

Longue durée et désenclavement

Historians have long focused on the independence war, and this has given rise to a rich historiography. Consequently, the longer term colonial period was less extensively explored. However, recent historiography shows that new ground has been broken. It is perhaps now time to pause and reflect on the historiography. The purpose of this conference is two-fold: firstly, can we have a better understanding of the colonization of Algeria in the longue durée, beyond the traditional focus on periods of conflict? The second aim is to take the history of Algeria out of its isolation and place it instead within the broader picture of imperial history – whether in relation to hexagonal France or the other French colonies.

Call for papers - Middle Ages

Arabic Chancellery Documents through the Prism of Historicity

Writing, Vocabulary, Syntax, and Intertextuality from ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd al-Kātib (d. 750) to al-Qalqashandī (d. 1418)

This conference will address the evolution of chancellery styles, their regional diversity, and the history of the rhymed prose (sajʿ), this language of authority that was supposed to obey rules definitively fixed by the Prophet or the first secretaries of the Islamic Empire. What were the technical modalities for innovation? On what semantic, lexical, syntactical, and/or graphic levels did it manifest? Rather than on norms, codes, and rules, studies will focus on writing styles, orthographic variants, atypical handwriting, deletion, the transgression of norms, semantic revitalization, neologisms, and the variety of styles for citing the Quran or referencing ḥadīth. We are seeking to renew study of a corpus considered not as a fixed and ossified text, technical and off-putting, but as a living, evolving, and diverse ensemble.

Lands of History, Spaces of the Histoirian in the Arab World

The Writing of History in the Maghreb and The Machrek

Plus d’un demi-siècle après les indépendances du monde arabe, quel bilan pouvons-nous dresser des productions historiographiques ? Il s’agira à la fois d’opérer un retour sur la production historiographique issue des deux régions du monde arabe (Maghreb et Machreq), de mettre en lumière les évolutions récentes dont cette production témoigne sur le plan de ses objets, de ses questionnaires et de ses méthodes, et de s’interroger sur les transformations des conditions matérielles et symboliques présidant à son élaboration. Articulant histoire de l’histoire et histoire des historiens, cet état des lieux s’attachera à l’examen des enjeux communs aux praticiens de la discipline et à leurs déclinaisons spécifiques dans les différents contextes nationaux et régionaux. Cette invite à la réflexion vise davantage à interroger les pratiques intellectuelles qui sous-tendent l’accumulation des connaissances historiques sur les sociétés du Maghreb et du Machreq que ces connaissances elles-mêmes.
